This is a lovely place with great service. First off I appreciate a restaurant that provides a variety to their menu that showcases food from other cultures. Ebony serves Ethiopian cuisine and vegan / vegetarian items. The food we've had was awesome and the presentation is really cool. I would recommend people eat there first as they serve you meal on a crepe like food which you use to pick up the other food on your platter. It was very fun. I was visiting my friend for the weekend and she suggested this place. Coming from the Bay, I've eaten a fair amount of Ethiopian food and have my favorite spot which is hard to top. This cute, little, spot somehow gives off warm, homely vibes. I think it's the employees who made us feel extra welcome on Ethiopian Christmas! We ordered the 3 item combo which was enough for two of us, plus a small breakfast for me the next morning. With tip, it was around $34. When we were first eating it, I wasn't super impressed, and found the flavors to be slightly distinct from what I'm accustomed to. I've had Ethiopian in DC, as well, and suspect traditional dishes must have some regional variation, so there's that. While I was first eating, I thought, this is good, but not mind blowing. My mind changed when I had my leftovers the next morning...after all the flavors had time to meld. My tiny breakfast had me wanting more! I love that this place is vegan and gluten free because so many restaurants make injera with wheat blends and sometimes it can be difficult to trust that vegan dishes are actually vegan. I also appreciate that this restaurant had a couple items on the menu I'd never had before and it seems like they add specials here and there. I would go back next time I'm visiting! read more

I haven't lived in SLO since 2001, and at least back then the best I recall when dining out were vegan "options" at establishments. I still make a point to pass through the area with some frequency and have been grateful to slowly, but surely, see some all vegan establishments crop up. Thus, when I was driving through in September en route to a concert and noticed a vegan Ethiopian restaurant appear in the Happy Cow application that I hadn't spotted before, I made a mental note to check it out when I was next in the area. I'm grateful I did! I am blessed to be near a couple of all vegan Ethiopian restaurants in the East Bay, but Ebony's injera is on another level of any other Ethiopian or Eritrean restaurant at which I have dined: incredibly light and tender. The spicing of the dishes I had was savory yet delicate, and the portion size (both times I have been I ordered the full order) was just right. Not an overwhelming amount of food, and sufficient to take away for leftovers to be enjoyed later if my appetite was not famished. I don't foresee moving back to the area, nor do I imagine the vegan Ethiopian establishments I frequent in Berkeley nor Oakland will up their game to Ebony's level, yet this is a stop I look forward to making in the future when I am in that region. I don't think it gets much better. At the moment, I get the impression they have limited (yet very kind and gracious) staff and have some outdoor seating with the option for to go orders, so keep that in mind? Thankfully, both of my visits thus were not crowded, but a bit of patience and preparing for the weather is advisable. This is not fast food, and should be enjoyed and appreciated as such. read more

From time to time I'll feel inspired enough to cobble together a combination of words that closely resembles how I feel after leaving a great restaurant. This is one of those moments. This will be fun. I read an article in some magazine about this place. Right away, I felt like I knew the owner without actually meeting her. She has a deep passion for community and understands how food is used as a medium for connecting people. I knew the food was going to be good, because it was gonna be made with love. I was not disappointed. Normally, when I'm hungry I usually eat non-vegan stuff. I came here hungry. I left full! And not just full, but with the feeling of light contentment. It kind of felt like I just meditated. Huh! I decided to go out of my way and take a few nice photos of the ambience, the menu, and the food itself. No matter what you get, it's going to be pretty damn amazing. You can throw a dart at any of the things you can choose from on the menu, and you will not be disappointed. Not. At. All. Definitely worth a try, and I strongly recommend coming here with an awesome friend you want to have a great conversation with. This is the absolute perfect place for it. So excited to try this place for the first time! I had Ethiopian food previously but my husband and stepdaughter had not, and they both loved it! We ordered a full order and also a half order of everything on the menu except the green beans. It was absolutely delicious. The injira is top notch. Can't wait to go back regularly! Today we finally got some takeout from Ebony. I love Ethiopian food. I always say if I were forced to be a vegetarian (for example if I had to kill my own animals for food), I could only eat Ethiopian, Indian, or possibly some other Asian food. Ebony serves vegan dishes. Today they had Misir Wat, Kik Alicha, as well as 2 potato dishes, one with carrots and one with beets. I have had all these dishes at many other Ethiopian restaurants all around the world. Given that this is the first place on the Central Coast to get this cuisine (not considering some place in SB that apparently serves this cuisine one weekend day), I am so impressed. All dishes tasted as they should. The misir wat was the best for me as I love spicy dishes. I wish they would do some meat dishes especially Gored Gored and Kitfo, but I respect the vegan belief. Now I'd like to see some Azifa and Timatim Fitfit to add to the menu. read more

I read about the Ebony pop-up in SLO Life mag, and had a chance to go on a Friday. First of all- authentic Ethiopian food in San Luis Obispo? What a wonderful surprise! I used to bemoan the lack of diversity in the culinary scene here, but less and less these days. Passion projects like Ebony are changing it up. We got the full meal, and it was the perfect amount for two. Everything was delicious, but the star was the potato and carrot dish. Glad we got the double portion of that one. As far as take-out lunch spot goes it's not the cheapest place, but man, you can taste the quality. It's very worth it for a treat. As of this writing, Instagram is their main promotional tool and is where they post their menu and hours. I recommend checking that out before you go, because they're pretty limited. One more thing- the location is hard to find but they're about to put seating out and I think that will make it easier. It's such a satisfying find, I can't wait to see them grow! read more

This meal was delicious. The Denech Alican Wot which is potato's and carrots cooked with caramelized onions, garlic, ginger and turmeric. Mixes very well and flavorful. The vegetables were cooked just right held their weight in the mix. The Shitro Wot is a thick paste like sauce with roasted chickpeas simmered in onion garlic and tomato. I was traveling through the area and looking for some Ethiopian food as there isn't any where I live. I saw this place online and went and absolutely feel in love with it. Turns out it was their food day open (took me a while to get to writing this review). The ambience was delightful, the owners were wonderful, and I was SO happy and impressed that they have such incredibly high ingredients, even down to the oils they use.
