This trip, to what should be a world heritage site, is an absolute must see while the megaliths are still standing. They are on private property but the owners must allow access, according to regulations. Our guide, Mario, has studied archeology at the local university and is very passionate. Of course you will learn about the standing stones and their purpose, but you will also learn about cork, wild flowers, and local animals. He is an amazing guide! read more
This was an excellent tour - a steal at only 25 Euros. We drove to 3 sites that date from 6000 to 3000 BC: Almendres Cromlech, Standing Stone of Almendres, and the Dolmen de Zambujeiro. The guide (Mário) is very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the region, and he's also very passionate about archeology as a whole. He has an assistant do the actual driving, so he is free to chat while traveling between sites. The sites are all on private land (cork farms). They are not well maintained or protected, and no facilities have been built (yet?) for visitors. There was only one place to go to the bathroom during the tour and it had not been cleaned in years. So go to the restroom before the tour. Bring water and a hat. read more
