This small family winery is is run by people that care about their product and their customers and is a welcome relief from the high production wineries, We were warmly greeted by Steve and Pam and then personally hosted as we tasted both bottled and barreled wines as Steve provided us with a wealth of information on affect that the barrels and the barrel making process has on the wines as we tasted from barrels from different cooperage and regions... who knew . Anyway, the wines are great, we bought Cabernet, Ensemble and would have bought more but we didn't have room in our small cars. A definite must stop in our opinion read more

I was at the Courtyard in Paso Robles. ( great hotel) We had a little extra time to fit one more tasting into our trip. We looked for a close location so stopped into Ecluse. Everything from the staff to the location was great. We enjoyed the time there as music has any winery. The only issue I have is I did not buy enough of their wine. When we tasted it after we got home we were so sorry we didn't ship a full case. read more

They have limited wines available for purchase and based on supply and demand philosophy, just love the fact they make very few of the wines I like. Okay okay that may sound awful but the wines they make are actually of great quality. What's even better? The wine tasting is free! Needless to say I signed up as a member and will be receiving shipments once a year! Say what?!? Yes! It's worth it. We tasted their young wines in the barrels and even though They were relatively young, the taste and flavored were developing quite well and therefore enhanced our wine tasting experience. OMG! Amazing place! So glad we checked Yelp on this one. Ok, so you have to drive a bit to get there but you MUST go here. The winery is on a hilltop overlooking the vines. Daniela was a pure delight and was very patient with the four of us. We had the pleasure to meet and talk with Steve the winemaker who truly cares about what he does and it shows. His sole focus is on quality and remaining small and family run. The award-winning Cab was amazing and at around $32 is a total steal! They limit you to one bottle and Daniela will not accept bribes. This wine would sell for much more if you put a Napa label on it. TIP: The wine club is only one shipment per year (October) and you can buy additional quantities after you get your shipment. They do ask that you commit to three shipments and/or reorders prior to cancellation. Daniela (who is a total foodie) gave us some interesting Syrah barrel samples to compare which was a special treat. They also had cheese out which was a nice touch. On the way home, I got yelled at by my group for asking so many questions (soil types, etc) but I was fascinated by the place and location. I also like to know a little bit about the wine I'm drinking and that is why I enjoy visiting these small family run places. Every wine was tasted was excellent. A really fun spot. Highly recommend this place if you're in town for tastings. Drink in the barrel room. They took us over and gave us a sample straight from a couple of barrels to see the difference. Good idea. They are also very pet friendly. They loved Polly Pocket (our dog). Great wines and great people. They have fantastic award winning cab, Syrah, zin, red blends and some good whites too. It is a low key tasting experience. The view is gorgeous and their is a picnic table that you can enjoy some snacks and the view. Anthony and the tasting room staff was very helpful and friendly. It's dog friendly and they have a blend called blind dog that is amazing for the price point and some of the proceeds go to a charity to train service dogs. We really enjoyed the visit today. The tasting was free as already captured by the other reviews but we were fortunate enough to be hosted by the owner Steve Lock. He was very friendly and informative. He also offered barrel tasting of the petite syrah and his version of port. Both were worth trying and we look forward to the actual bottles. He even signed our bottle. He's a very gracious host. Now the reason we came. ..the wine. We found the zinfandel and cabarnet sauvignon to be excellent wines. The prices were a bit on the higher side, but considering you get the tasting for free, it's not outrageous. Found this little winery through the help of YELP~ first wine tasting stop as we headed into Paso Robles. Let me start off by saying this is truly a hidden gem. Complimentary wine tasting, great tasting reds, friendly staff & barrel-tasting! Love the cute lil blonde Mattie....she makes you feel like your visiting a childhood friend :) the cherry on top was spending some time w/Steve the owner...that was a nice lil surprise for him to come & visit with us. We love this winery! The wines are superb, and the owners and staff are wonderful. They now offer private tastings (flights, etc). And a new patio to enjoy the sunsets with a beautiful glass of wine. Mostly reds and exquisite blends- but also a new Chardonnay and white blend (prelude) that are both dele table. This is a great hidden winery a little off the beaten path. Their staff is very friendly- and their winery is dog friendly- a plus for this dog owner! Their tastings are complimentary which we had no idea until the end, a pleasant surprise! We even got a tasting straight from the oak barrel, a neat experience! Must must visit! Depending on which way you approach, you may find yourself driving down a rather windy, dirt road. Don't worry...once you get there, you'll find that it's totally worth a little dirt on the newly washed car for a spectacular Paso Robles view and AMAZING wines. Ecluse specialty is blends and do they ever do a phenomenal job at blending. Everything on the tasting menu was excellent and even their young wine in the barrel was really good! (not always the case at other places). Some people next to us were mentioning something about port, so we inquired and got a sample. Yum! All of their stuff was worth bringing home. read more

Two words, Barrel Tasting. The guy at Red Soles told us to come out here, and we were not dissapointed. Very friendly, knowledgeable staff directed us to a bunch of wine straight out of the barrel. Excellent wine and wonderful people! Steve and Pam are very welcoming, bringing you into their world of wine making with the occasional barrel tasting, and tasting current releases. Thanks to Ecluse, I learned about the difference between French Oak, and Hungarian Oak by tasting the same grape from different barrels. What a treat. I also took home a bottle of the Ecluse 2005 Syrah, aged in French and American oak for 18 months. The nose is fruit forward...and the wine has overtones of chocolate. I should have gotten a case. The Lock vineyard consistently produces great fruit, and Ecluse produces excellent Rhone style blends, Cabernets, Syrahs, Zinfandels. If you're in Paso Robles, definitely visit Ecluse and try some of these limited bottlings. You won't find wine like this anywhere else. read more

We were early to our reservation for Kiler Ridge so we drove a little farther to Ecluse. I'm glad we got over there, it is a great area and so incredibly peaceful! We tried each of their wines and two barrel tastings. All the wine was really good and reasonably priced. I appreciate that they didn't charge us a tasting fee, even though I didn't buy any wine. Ecluse was an absolute pleasure to visit. Daniela greeted us in their wine barrel/tasting room as was an amazing host. This winery is truly a gem. The property is nestled on a beautiful hilltop, overlooking overlapping fields of vines. The winery owners and their staff are so friendly, courteous and down-to-earth. We ended up having a conversation with Steven, the owner, for over an hour. This place is not like the typical snooty winery where the staff hardly even knows the owners. Here, the owners are pouring your wine! I absolutely LOVED their wines, they have so many that are equally amazing, it's hard to choose a favorite. They even let you try a couple of barrel tastings. If you can only visit one winery in Paso Robles - Ecluse is the one! Some wineries may have a few good aspects but Ecluse scores top marks across the board. To recap: 1. Terrific 360 degree views from hilltop location. 2. Location is set among their own vineyard. (Note - many Paso Robles "wineries" are simply blenders and bottlers for grapes grown by other vineyards). 3. Casual, welcoming barn setting. 4. Friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and professional staff. 5. Owner and winemaker Steve Lock on hand to greet and connect with customers. I was impressed by Steve's genuineness and desire to truly connect with customers. You'd somewhat expect a winemaker to be aloof and come across as a marketing machine. Steve is the opposite - a laid back wine guy who desires two-way conversation. 6. No charge for tastings! 7. Barrel tastings are standard - NOW this was a unique treat not offered by any other winery I've visited (including Napa/ Sonoma). We sampled the same wine from two different barrels. Both barrels were American oak but manufactured by different companies - one American and the other French. My wife and I clearly tasted the difference. The American manufactured barrel produced wine which was open and fruity. The French manufactured barrel produced wine which was tighter and less fruity. Again, same wine but different barrels. 8. Ecluse established a second label and fund to benefit Dogs for the Deaf rescue dogs. In summary, this is the one Paso Robles winery which is a must to visit! read more

I have been going to Ecluse for years and have never found a wine that i didn't like... and they make a lot of wine. Their two blends, Rendition and Improv, are consistently my favorite blends. Their single varietals are excellent too. They make a great Zin, Syrah and Cab.. you really can't go wrong. I LOVE how they do barrel tastings.. always get at least 1, sometimes 2, tastes with the 'wine thief'. Prices are super fair considering how delicious the wine is. They also make one of my favorite "cheap" wines called Blind Dog- $12 for members and it's great! read more

Great wine, fun staff and a casual atmosphere very close to downtown Paso. We've spent several weeks in Paso every year since 2004 and have checked many local wineries. Ecluse is the only wine club that we've joined. Why? Because we've loved every wine we've tried, and we know we'll treasure the annual shipment. If you want to visit a fancy building with art and wine accessories, you won't find them at Ecluse, but you will find excellent wines at fair prices. read more

Just up the road from Terry Hoage is a tiny vineyard & winery run by Steve & Pam Lock. They do sales & tastings out of their barrel room, which affords you the opportunity to finish up with a barrel tasting or two of what's coming up. While we were there we had a nice white (Prelude), a syrah that was good but probably needs more time, a tasty GSM blend (Rendition), a fantastic cab, a cab blend (Ensemble), and a really nice zin. We were most impressed with the cab, which was smooth and fruity, even newly released. For $28, hell yes, we'll take some of that. The zin was good enough that I thought about it, but in the end decided that there was enough zin in the car already as it was. Maybe next trip. read more

Well, the staff was extremely friendly, welcoming and the establishment was set up nicely. They offer Barrel tasting which is a nice bonus. Issues however deal with the wine itself. Too acidic and not very balanced in my opinion, as well as others in the group. Maybe an additional year on the shelf might have benefited the youthful varietals offered. Nice people in general and hate to give it 2 stars but we visited for the wine. read more
