this is a widely overrated service. The bikes are never refilled, especially on Fridays. the workers don't give a damn either.

We were looking forward to renting bikes in CDMX and saw all of the Ecobici bikes ready to go. There were 15 of them ready right outside our condo. 4 of us downloaded the app and proceeded to sign up when each of us hit a snag when we tried to use a payment card. Each of us had our cards rejected and after multiple tries over a 2 hour period only one of us was able to finish the sign up process. Very frustrating and time-wasting experience. read more

Incredibly convenient way to get around town. The app is useful for locating bikes, as well as parking spots. The bikes seem well-maintained. There's a reporting system at the bike stands to let Ecobici know if something is out on the bike. My only wish is that it would let me pick the bike I wanted to ride rather than assign one randomly (or seemingly so), so I could find one I like without having to adjust it. You have to wait five minutes between rides, so if you accidentally return the bike before you get to your final destination, take note! We made that mistake a few times since we were not familiar with the city, but it's a great way to get around Mexico City. read more

Great in principle and mostly in roll out. Helps to reduce the smog and pollution in the city but not widely used as it could be. First registration is a pain. You just can't use your credit card like you can in the states for similar city bikes, you physically have to show up and register at 3-4 of their locations and complete a 3-4 page application and show your ID and credit card info. We went to Reforma 22 (address is a mall) but the registration kiosk is in the Reforma island in the middle by the big reptile like sculpture- see pic. There are other registration areas and each has different times of operation. It takes about 15-20' to complete and you need to fill out an urban bike test/quiz which the guy did for us. There is a $1500 peso deposit for the usual incidentals and the price for 1 week unlimited use is $312 pesos or $94 pesos per day. They also have a deposit for overcharges like if any of your season runs over 45'. You get your own magnetized card to use at each station. So you're not inserting credit card each time. Yes you can only check out any 1 bike every 45' (15' longer than city bikes in Chicago though). Then you need to wait a couple of minutes if you're returning and checking out a bike in the same station. There are hundreds of stations all over- download the App and find out the closest one and how many empty return spots there are ... or just wait like at big attraction spots in Sunday (big day for locals in the city- everything is crazy). There are bike trails along most major streets like Paseo de la Reforma but not smaller side streets and traffic and cars can be knarly so be careful. The city is also not a grid so it's confusing so get to know the Lay out and certain land markers like parks etc. The bikes are heavy but durable with adjustable seat and 3 gears and bell although not all function. There are 2 types of stations - generation 3 and 4. Operate similarly. They are convenient if you're brave enough to try and feel adept in an urban setting. bring your own helmet!!! read more
