What's there not to like about Ecuatoriana. Their staff is friendly. Their food is fresh and tasty and has that homecooked meal vibe. I've gotten their chicken and rice with beans, a pretty filling dish. It's almost easy to forget about this place cause it's located on Amsterdam Avenue instead of Broadway. Been meaning to try here for ages. I stopped by for a late lunch on a Friday. Sparse but clean enough old school looking place but the delicious chicken breasts with beans and rice were prepared with what I would describe as a modern or updated touch with wonderful presentation. Huge portion with two large pieces of chicken. The papaya shake was fantastic. Service was a bit on the slow side but friendly. Will certainly go back to try other items on the menu. read more

I came in to get 1/4 of a chicken so I could shred the meat for my dogs food. I am in the area on weekends only and forgot my spoiled dogs food. Well, the place is not very appealing, and staff speaks limited English, but they are very friendly. This was my third visit here over the past year to get the chicken, and my next visit will be to get food for me not Chichi. While waiting I can't help but notice how nicely the meals are plated and look so yummy. I can't wait to try for myself, so next weekend I will post an update. read more

I was incredibly impressed by my visit Ecuadorians Restaurant. My students picked this place for lunch on a school trip and we all were blown away by our food. I had the steak and onions with rice and beans. The kids tried the fried pork chops and the grilled chicken. Only giving 2 stars because of the Chaulafan...only decent plate I had. Husband and I sat ourselves- which is fine. It's NYC and you get used to that. Came here based on all the yelp reviews but honestly just a waste of time and money. Waitress immediately hands us menus, no " hello" no greeting. Comes back and asks if we are ready. We order a ceviche de pulpo. Ceviche mixto and chaufalan rice. Waited 45 minutes before husband got up and asked for the status on our food. Both ceviches were under seasoned. Very bland. I will say that the portion size was good, plenty of fish and shrimp in the mixto. I've had way better ceviche elsewhere, and even have made ceviche at home that was so much better. Chaufalan rice was pretty good. Decent taste. Only thing I enjoyed. Cash only, they add sales tax which I'm not even sure if that's right and also add in an automatic 15% tip. I'm a great tipper but did not like that it was just added without my knowledge beforehand and also the service sucks!!!!! My wife and I stopped into this restaurant for lunch on an early Saturday afternoon after visiting the nearby Hamilton Grange National Memorial. It wasn't crowded when we arrived but it soon filled up with groups of people, including families with their children. We shared two dishes. The first dish was the Ceviche de Pulpo (octopus, onions, tomatoes, lemon sauce and cilantro), which came in a large bowl and was an entire meal but worked well sharing when served family-style. The octopus was very succulent and tasted fresh. The second dish is something that is only offered on weekends (it's under the Sabado y Domingo heading on the menu) and was called the Bandera (Ecuadorian flag plate). This consisted of goat, roast pork, rice, roasted mashed potatoes and shrimp salad. It was served in one large plate with four individual compartments and the potato was placed in the center. This was very tasty and filling - I'm glad we paired this with the ceviche as it helped to lighten things up. read more

I ordered it to go about a week ago and was so much in shock at how flavorful, soft, and flakey the fish was! It was lightly breaded but didn't feel oily at all. It had a soft yet crispy outer layer and just melted like butter in your mouth. Ugh! The torture of writing this review and salivating over this! I had a craving obsession over it that I had to come back, but this time, to sit in. OMG! I'm so happy I didn't finish my soup because I had been waiting all week for this and it was just as good as I remembered it. Prices are mmm a bit higher yet it's not going into the upkeep, by looks of it!!! I begrudgingly, agree to stay although I'm quite embarrassed at this point since it's not a gleam of what I remembered it be! Someone doesn't care anymore I suppose! We order our food... I've been living in the neighborhood for almost 2 years and never stopped in here... until now. Boy, have I been missing out! The food was simply delicious: we had the Bandera (Flag platter)and the chaulafan (Chinese-esque fried rice with tons of shrimp). The portions are huge too. Can't go wrong with entraña a la Parilla (it's their version of skirt steak). Delicious! Just sometimes the meat can have too many nerves, but the taste is very good. I have also had their chaulafan, delicious as well. When my parents come over they have their sopa de mariscos, they love it. My brother likes their churrasco (which is not skirt steak like for other people), it comes in a sauce with an egg, my brother likes that. read more

It was a pleasant surprise to have decent Ecuadorian food outside of Queens. My partner and I were in the area and Yelped "ceviche" and boom, there was Ecuatoriana just north of Columbia-town. We definitely got our ceviche (seafood mixto), our fried rice (Chaulafan), and some delicious fried pork (fritada). Shout out to my friends for reminding me how it's spelled and pronounced. I got a chicken soup to go. The menu stated the price as $14. When it was time to pay, I was charged $17. The cashier said it was $1 extra because I used a card to pay and the rest was tax. Of course, none of this is stated on the receipt, or anywhere in the store. The soup was fine and great if you're carb loading because it came with a pint of rice and lots of undercooked potatoes, and one chicken drumstick was in it. Nothing else. $17 seems very expensive for that. And the cook in the kitchen uses her hand to portion out the rice. read more

As a born and raised ecuadorean I can say that this is the real deal. Wether you're looking for the Sierra food or the Costa plates, they do a pretty damn good job nailing the flavors in both. I had the Hornado and the Shrimp Ceviche. My girl has the fanesca (only available during holy week). Portions were enormous, and the side dishes (I.e. hominy, plantains, rice) were abundant and just as good. Not only that, no typical Ecuadorean dish is complete without Ecuadoran beer (Pilsener is available) or Ecuadorean Soda. I recommend Fioravanti, strawberry soda. Prepare yourself for a huge language barrier, as this place has very few English speaking staff. Menu is in English and Spanish, and you just point to what you like. A great alternative to going all the way to jackson heights to have my native fare. read more

Went to this place based on good Yelp ratings but was terribly dissatisfied by poor customer service. The food was just OK in my opinion, not great by NY standards considering the wealth of amazing eateries. I found their steak a little under-flavored, but after adding some salsa it was OK and I did finish my meal. On the customer service end however... I was chastised by an employee (waiter? owner?) who was not my server when he noticed I brought in a can of soda from the corner store. He scolded me as he walked by my table saying it was illegal to bring in drinks from somewhere else and not acceptable. He didn't talk to me in a civilized way or try to hear my side of the story. Little did he know that my server and I had just had a conversation where she offered to sell me a soda can another employee brought.... If employees aren't following the rules, you can't yell at clients for following suit. Fair warning that this is the type of place where the employees will talk about you in Spanish (as they did with me after the above incident)... right in front of your face... Met all my expectations! I was really frustrated when I found this place bc I had been traveling to queens every time I had a craving for ecuadorian food. But all long I had a restaurant blocks away from where I live that there was no need for me to travel far to eat authentic ecuadorian cuisine for a reasonable price. Raised in an ecuadorian household, I once in a while crave well prepared ceviche or other ecuadorian plates. This place does not fail to make me happy. The space itself is rather small but the service is efficient and the food is amazing. Only thing I do disliked about this place is that it is cash only! You've been warn. There is no sign so during my first visit I had to hunt down an ATM while my friend stayed behind at the restaurant. This place gets 4 stars for location (2-3 minute walk from the ABCD trains) price, and deliciousness. The ceviche is the best, this side of Central America. I lived in Miami for a while and experienced some of the best Latin American food, but this ceviche "soup" trumps anything I've ever had. It was packed with flavor. Also had the calamari appetizer. Perfection. Star taken away because they don't serve alcohol (only beer), they don't take debit/credit, and the music is overwhelmingly loud. Let me count the ways this restaurant blows me out of the water. Three things: the flavor, the size, and the authenticity. 1. Everything is delicious. I love the ceviches the most. Ceviche mixto con concha is the holy grail of Ecuadorian ceviches in my opinion. Supple octopus, fresh fish, tender shrimp, etc. in a delicious, lightly sour, refreshing black clam broth. It's one of the best I've ever had. The encebollado is a saturday and sunday thing only; it's a thick tuna broth soup with cassava, and it will warm your belly in the winter. 2. If you have ever ordered ceviche in restaurants, you'd get used to tiny appetizer portions. That isn't at all how ceviche is served in Ecuador. They come in big groupy bowls with rice and extra lime juice. And that's how it is in this place. Expect to be very, very full by the end. 3. Which brings me to the last point. My roommate is Ecuadorian and I have had my fair share of Ecuadorian food. She agrees that this place is amazing and authentic. Overall, excellent choice for authentic food. Ideally, I'd be able to rate Ecuatoriana 3.5 stars, but Yelp only does whole numbers. The food here is pretty good, the service pretty lousy. I'm half Ecuadorian myself and have grown up with my mom's and grandma's top-notch cooking, so I have definitely had my fair share of ceviche and tostado. While our waitress was very sweet, she rarely swung by our table...when we were one of only 6 parties at the place. Not ideal. The overarching theme of all the food we ordered was that it was well prepared and well plated, but under seasoned. The tostado (crispy corn kernels) was a little too soft, and the tostones crispy, but a lil bland. Thankfully, this was made up by the excellent aji (hot sauce) which was robust, fresh, and spicy. My chaulafan (Ecuadorian fried rice) looked beautiful on the plate, and all the meat (shrimp, sausage, chicken) was nicely cooked, but there was really no flavoring. Same with my mom's white fish ceviche - fresh, kind to the eyes, but no spice. I'm happy there's an Ecuadorian place in Hamilton Heights, but the service and flavoring need some work. read more

Ecuatoriania is the best restaurant in NYC north of Central Park. Seriously. I don't know much about Ecuadorian cuisine but I have been in the neighborhood for almost 10 years now. I have tried every restaurant. This place is AMAZING. I usually eat here for lunch. They have lunch specials that are crazy. Under $10 they give you some kind of meat with rice/beans/salad and soup but holy smokes the flavor of the food. It is just explosive with beautiful flavors. The only way I can explain it is to compare to what a loving grandmother would cook. Everything is just so so so delicious. It makes me wonder why there isn't an Ecuadorian restaurant on every corner. And I only tried the lunch specials. I see other tables who order things from the dinner menu and it is just looks amazing. Lunch special at Ecuatoriana: You get a bowl of soup (something beautiful like your grandmother would make). Then a plate of food like fried fish or charcoal chicken or pork chop, etc with rice/beans. I am not latino. I do not like rice/beans so much. But they are delectable here. Also you usually get a glass of refresco (like cool aid but made with fresh juices). Under $10. Try it and see. For flavor and quality, I say with no hesitation that Ecuatoriana is the best restaurant north of Central Park in Manhattan. read more
