The music is on point and it makes the whole place feel lively without being overwhelming. One tip: reservations are highly recommended because it fills up quickly. Also, the entrance can be a little tricky to find the first time. You enter from the alley between 6th and 7th Street on San Jacinto. Made a reservation for a Tuesday and well, it was quite empty. As in we were the only people in the place. The bartender was friendly and polite during the interaction. Drinks ordered were as anticipated and we got 2 rounds of the same drink. The seating was a bit different with the bench seating more firm to keep you sitting more up right. I didn't feel very safe walking there at night--even with my husband--so I'd recommend going with a group, especially after dark. There was only one bartender working that night. We eventually had to walk up to the bar ourselves since she was more engaged in conversation with the two guys seated in front of her. I would avoid this place at all costs. It's in a sketchy location with an unfriendly staff, overpriced cocktails, and generally bad vibes. We had a reservation here for 5 people at 10pm. We walked in thinking we were in the wrong spot because it was in such a bad spot and completely dead inside. At 10:24, the waitress, who had been unfriendly with us since the moment we walked in, told us we'd have to leave in a few minutes because there was another reservation. Girl, I just sat down to my own reservation! There were only 2 other parties in the whole place, not even half full, and quick glance at Resy said there were still open for 5 people at 10:30, 10:45, 11:00, 11:15, etc. I know we were being a little talkative at our table, so I straight up asked the waitress when she returned: "Are we being too loud?" She pretended she didn't understand what I was asking. I just wanted honesty, we would've been quieter if they asked! I cannot FATHOM why a half empty bar on a Saturday night would be passive aggressively asking us to leave, but the vibes were ruined by that point so we left. We've also been on other occasions and have always enjoyed the drinks and the atmosphere, which is why we chose to return again this year for a Valentine's surprise my husband had prepaid for. When we arrived, we were asked for a credit card, which was confusing since the experience was already paid for. My husband asked our server what the prepaid experience included and was told it came with "2 pairings," so we reasonably assumed that meant two drinks each. At the end of the night, we were presented with an additional $80 bill. When we questioned this, the manager explained that the prepaid "pairings" were actually just small pieces of truffle chocolate meant to accompany drinks, and that the prepaid price was for the chocolate and "access" to the Valentine's Day menu -- not the drinks themselves. None of this was clearly explained upfront, and the wording of "2 pairings" is misleading. Had we understood that the $60 per person covered only chocolate and menu access, we would have made a different decision. What was meant to be a special Valentine's surprise ended up feeling confusing and disappointing due to poor communication. Clearer explanations and transparency would go a long way. read more

Got a chance to be in Austin for work recently and thought I'd give myself a little speakeasy tour. Eden was my first stop and it was just absolutely delightful. While there, I ran into a group of people that lived in St. Clair Shores which is not to far from where I live in Michigan. What are the odds of that? They were kind enough to invite me to join them since I was on my own, but I was on a schedule. Eden reminds me of a bar we have back home called Black Salt. Both base their cocktails on ancient remedies and theories and their drinks have a very earthy feel to them. I tried a couple of their craft cocktails and they were both excellent. The bartender was both attentive and efficient. I was here pretty early as it was the first stop on the tour, so it was super calm for the moment but it's not a large venue so I imagine it gets loaded up pretty quickly. They have different themes and we were there for the earthy/herbal theme. It was kind of surprising that some of the drinks were pretty syrupy especially with the theme and intention of wellness. I am so grateful I stumbled into this amazing little bar the other day! It is very much hard to find and the entry is in an alley, but worth the hunt and anxiety when you have a moment of doubt about what you're getting yourself into. When you enter, there is a dark sign and a curtain guiding you into a cozy bar with great music (their Spotify is on their website). Chris and Trevor were awesome - I came solo and they took a lot of time giving me awesome recommendations for Austin. I felt like I had a solid insider look at some of the best spots in the area, and I ended up staying out much later than I planned because I was having such a good time! Obviously, you also come for the drinks and these hold up to the hype. I had the Fall of Dram which is a beautifully balanced scotch drink with a hint of coconut. I followed it with the Fruit of the Forbidden, a floral vodka based cocktail. Both were delicious! They did give good directions though, we just weren't expecting it to be in an alleyway with homeless people and garbage haha! However, once you find that red light and make your way inside you are instantly transported to another dimension? It seems like it! This ambiance is dark, sexy and sophisticated. This is the definition of a true Speakeasy... Address sends you to a spot, but when you get there it's a "front". Keep looking, or go to the site for exact directions. The place is where you least expect it. Purple doors, as if was meant for me (being my favorite color). Then a second pair of doors with Eden written on it, opens the actual place. Dark, with the bar being the first thing you see, then it opens up to a small room where a limited amount of people (with reservations) enjoy their libations. We were escorted to our table, and presented with menus by the lovely girl introducing us to their concept. She was amazing with recommendations and I ended having the Diary of Eve. Smooth, not too sweet and beautifully garnished with a rose petal. The Water of Life was also incredibly good. It was almost like an Irish Coffee but better with the sweetness of the salted caramel and chocolate cream. The mixologist also came to our table to see how we had liked our drinks and made a bit of conversation with us before having to go back to make other drinks. I don't live in the area, but came here with two of my friends a couple weekends ago. The ambiance is wonderful and a great surprise being that it's so far removed from the nearby Dirty 6. We had excellent service and the server even went as far as telling us if we didn't like our drinks, they would be happy to make a new drink. I don't drink a lot personally, and only ordered one drink which was The Fall of Dram. Being completely honest, it was hands down the best alcoholic drink I've ever had. The Water of Life (Irish coffee type drink) was spectacular. Everything else was pretty mediocre. Service left a LOT to be desired. There was no host to greet us when we arrived for our 6:30 reservation; we eventually just walked in. Our server almost never came over to check in us, even though the server to patron ration was about 1:4. We had to order at the bar, flag the waiter down for service, and ask for our check twice, eventually just paying up at that bar, which was super awkward. A place like this so supposed to be an intimate experience, so the lack of service was a huge disappointment. The place is VERY small, so it didn't really make sense. The decor inside is cute, but was it enough to come back? My second drink definitely was nothing to write home about. The Water of Life, in my opinion, was their only saving grace. I have been here twice. The first time, great experience (with the exception of how hot is was - as we were there in winter and heater was making us take clothes off). This last time, left A LOT to be desired. Our visit was fraught with issues. 1. Menu is limited (maybe 8-10 cocktails - which is small for a business who only focuses on cocktails). But they state they can make anything (see more about this below). 2. More than once they forget to put in our order or they were "sure what happened." 3. Their liquor offerings are something you'd expect of a regular bar or Chili's. First, if you're a cocktail bar and your special gin is Monkey47, that is sad. Second, a bottle of this typically less than $50. After doing the dinner at a nice restaurant, then partying/dancing at another club, we ended the night here at this speakeasy. It was a very intimate, very sophisticated vibe and we liked it! They had some tropical inspired drinks, as well as some classics. We probably would've enjoyed it more if we weren't 3 tequila shots deep, but it was still a nice way to end the night.
