We've also been on other occasions and have always enjoyed the drinks and the atmosphere, which is why we chose to return again this year for a Valentine's surprise my husband had prepaid for. When we arrived, we were asked for a credit card, which was confusing since the experience was already paid for. My husband asked our server what the prepaid experience included and was told it came with "2 pairings," so we reasonably assumed that meant two drinks each. At the end of the night, we were presented with an additional $80 bill. When we questioned this, the manager explained that the prepaid "pairings" were actually just small pieces of truffle chocolate meant to accompany drinks, and that the prepaid price was for the chocolate and "access" to the Valentine's Day menu -- not the drinks themselves. None of this was clearly explained upfront, and the wording of "2 pairings" is misleading. Had we understood that the $60 per person covered only chocolate and menu access, we would have made a different decision. What was meant to be a special Valentine's surprise ended up feeling confusing and disappointing due to poor communication. Clearer explanations and transparency would go a long way. read more

Made a reservation for a Tuesday and well, it was quite empty. As in we were the only people in the place. The bartender was friendly and polite during the interaction. Drinks ordered were as anticipated and we got 2 rounds of the same drink. The seating was a bit different with the bench seating more firm to keep you sitting more up right. She pretended she didn't understand what I was asking. I just wanted honesty, we would've been quieter if they asked! I cannot FATHOM why a half empty bar on a Saturday night would be passive aggressively asking us to leave, but the vibes were ruined by that point so we left. Got a chance to be in Austin for work recently and thought I'd give myself a little speakeasy tour. Eden was my first stop and it was just absolutely delightful. While there, I ran into a group of people that lived in St. Clair Shores which is not to far from where I live in Michigan. What are the odds of that? They were kind enough to invite me to join them since I was on my own, but I was on a schedule. Eden reminds me of a bar we have back home called Black Salt. Both base their cocktails on ancient remedies and theories and their drinks have a very earthy feel to them. I tried a couple of their craft cocktails and they were both excellent. The bartender was both attentive and efficient. I was here pretty early as it was the first stop on the tour, so it was super calm for the moment but it's not a large venue so I imagine it gets loaded up pretty quickly. I am so grateful I stumbled into this amazing little bar the other day! It is very much hard to find and the entry is in an alley, but worth the hunt and anxiety when you have a moment of doubt about what you're getting yourself into. When you enter, there is a dark sign and a curtain guiding you into a cozy bar with great music (their Spotify is on their website). Chris and Trevor were awesome - I came solo and they took a lot of time giving me awesome recommendations for Austin. I felt like I had a solid insider look at some of the best spots in the area, and I ended up staying out much later than I planned because I was having such a good time! I have been here twice. The first time, great experience (with the exception of how hot is was - as we were there in winter and heater was making us take clothes off). This last time, left A LOT to be desired. Our visit was fraught with issues. 1. Menu is limited (maybe 8-10 cocktails - which is small for a business who only focuses on cocktails). But they state they can make anything (see more about this below). 2. More than once they forget to put in our order or they were "sure what happened." 3. Their liquor offerings are something you'd expect of a regular bar or Chili's. Gin options were Tanqueray, Beefeater, Bombay (a few versions), etc. The only "special" gin they had was Monkey47...FOR $50 AN OUNCE!!!!! First, if you're a cocktail bar and your special gin is Monkey47, that is sad. Second, a bottle of this typically less than $50. Our server was really nice and apologized for the excuses he was having to make. Overall, I likely wouldn't go back for a third time (for reasons #1 & 3, mostly). We had excellent service and the server even went as far as telling us if we didn't like our drinks, they would be happy to make a new drink. Loveeee! My boyfriend and I have been really into speakeasies lately, and this may just be one of our new faves. It's difficult to find a true speakeasy in Austin, but Eden is one of the few that does it really well. This place was started by the same owners as Here Nor There, no it's no surprise that the cocktails, service, and vibes were all on point. It's difficult to find (which adds to the secretive vibe!) so here's how to find it - when you're on 6th or 7th street, walk down San Jacinto Blvd or Brazos St and you'll see an alleyway. Walk down that and you'll see two purple door. Once you go through those, you'll see Eden. I was definitely a little skeptical walking down an alleyway and wouldn't recommend doing this alone or at night. Once we entered, we were welcomed with red curtains and a front desk where we could check in - Eden takes reservations ahead of time and seats are pretty limited so I would recommend securing your spot beforehand. The inside of the bar was dimly lit and had little candles at each table - perfect for a speakeasy vibe! We loved every single cocktail we ordered! Here's what we had: Diary of Eve - my favorite! I'm a sucker for foamy, egg-white drinks and this one was just so refreshing, light, and delicious. Reap & Sow - think spicy (kinda) margarita! Loved this one but am still partial towards Diary of Eve. In Lieu of Taboo - fruity and yummy! This one was my boyfriend's favorite.
