Great Neighborhood bike shop! Have had several good experiences here. First, they helped me pick out my first commuting bike and I have been biking to work ever since! The bike was fairly priced and the sales person gave me a lot of helpful advice. I do most of my own maintenance, but sometimes there are issues I don't understand or don't have time to fix. Suddenly, while waiting, the owner lady literally ripped my sons bike out of his little hands and placed it near the exit door. She didn't say anything and then continued her way. Mind you, he did not walk around, nor did he ride his bike inside the store. Neither did he knock anything over. She didn't have the audacity to explain or to say anything. Then they managed to charge me without making eye contact and to say anything. I didn't say anything, and decided to let it slide, but I want you all to be aware that they are very rude here. I've been to many bike shops in the Chicagoland area, and this was by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced at one. Usually, the store owner/employee go out of their way to help you as soon as you walk in. Here, it was as if I was dealing with city employees that didn't want to do anything besides sit behind the counter combined with one of those small convenience stores you see featured in a scary movie that's supposed to give you a warning about venturing further into a small town. Maybe good for this time of year I guess, but no thanks, I'll be going to the other bike shops around the city and burbs. read more

After being disappointed at another bike shop who said they could assemble my grandsons bike in one week, but after a week and a day said it would take another week. It his birthday tomorrow so I called Mary at Edgebrook Cycle and they did for $5 less in a few hours. They had two bicycle mechanics working at the same time. Avoid this place like the plague. I purchased a bicycle online from the stores website and was told they cannot honor the price because the item was sold out and there was a manufacture glitch. I had explained to them that my order was placed and confirmed prior to the bicycle selling out. They failed to acknowledge that it was their mistake and instead of apologizing, the elderly lady called me an a-hole and hung up on me. I've been around bikes for a long time and have been to many bike shops. Edgebrook Cycle is by far one of the best shops you will find. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and very much interested in your overall biking experience, not just "getting the sale". Chris at the shop recently helped me decide on a mountain bike for my son. He took the time to really understand our needs for a bike and was extremely helpful. Yes, you will pay more than Walmart or Target, but for something as personal as a bike, where proper fit is so important, the extra money is more than worth it. Highly, highly recommend!! read more

My wife brought her bike in for a flat tire. They repaired it and sold her a "tune up" ... on a bike that had about 20 miles on it! It was virtually new. I went in to protest the bill, over $120 for a flat, kickstand and "tune up". and she said the bike must've needed it. Overpriced and poor service. I will never go back. read more

I have had two experiences here, both awful. First, I brought an old bike in to get their opinion on how much it'd cost to fix it up. The man was incredibly rude and derisive when he told me how much it would cost, and scoffed that I'd kept it so long in the first place. I may not ride a lot (hence not knowing how much it'd be and not being able to tune-up myself) but I did not need attitude. He wasn't even a good salesman, because he made no attempt to show me any of the bikes they had there! Skip ahead a year, and I decided to try again, just needing a tune-up and new tire on a new bike. I was quoted a week, and got called back in a day. That would have been nice, except I had some medical problems and I haven't been able to go get it yet. A week after drop-off, and the lady has left 2 extraordinarily rude messages, and threatened to charge me extra storage fees if I didn't pick it up in 24 hrs! Please, go someplace else. I haven't a clue how they've stayed open. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! DON'T GO HERE! This place is awful! THEY ARE RUDE AND ASHOLES! My rear brake cable loosened up, stopped by just to see if I could borrow a simple 3mm Allen wrench. Was told for insurance reasons they could not allow me to use one unless I purchased it. I then asked the mechanic if he could be so kindly just to tighten my cable. I was riding my bike on the bike trails and I noticed there was a clicking sound. My bicycle did fall in the garage the day before. I stopped by Edgebrook Cycle and they fixed the problem in 30 minutes despite they were very busy. The price was on the expensive side but none of the bicycle shops are cheap. SHAME ON YOU EDGEBROOK CYCLE I've lived in the neighborhood for 10 years and I've always stayed away from Edgebrook Cycle because they don't support their community. As the chair of my school's auction (school is located about 1.5 miles from the store) I had on many occasions asked them to donate to our school. Every year I was turned away. Not even a small donation of a helmet, bike pump, or carry bag for a school that is comprised of their neighbors and patrons. It always left me with a bad taste so I stayed away. However, recently my kids have had a few bike issues and for convenience sake I went there. The pedal had fallen off of my son's bike (it's a 10 speed, we're not talking little kids here) and I asked them to fix it. The charged me a lot but I did it anyway. One week later, it fell off again so my husband brought it back. Apparently they tried the easy fix to "save us money" but it didn't work so now we had to do the more expensive fix. You would think they would have credited us for the money on the original fix since they got it wrong but no. They blamed it on my kids use. He rode it 2 x's after they fixed it before it brook again, how could that be his fault? I would say it is the fault of shotty workmanship. However, my husband did not argue with them and had them fix it and also add a kick stand. Total bill $90!!! My son takes the bike out the next day, puts down the kick stand and it snaps in half. Took it back and they agreed to credit us for the kick stand but argued my son must have sat on the bike with the kick stand down and this is why it broke. I saw it happen. He did not, but even if he did, the kick stand was one day old. They were rude and unapologetic. Next time I am in need of a bike repair or part I will not support my neighborhood store but drive as far out of the way as I need to find an honest place with people who are not so rude and financially support their community. Not really sure why so much hate. I went there today to get a new bike for my wife. Not that they have a very rich collection of bikes but are extremely helpful. They fixed my bike at no additional cost oiled the chains and other parts. Bought a great bike for her and got good insights on using it properly and maintaing it. I read reviews before I went there and didn't really find any of them helpful people are sometimes too spoiled with their expectations. I even told the lady that I read reviews and wasn't sure what's up with that either. We will be definitely referring my friends over. Thanks for the help today. read more

I think the same as another reviewer , one star because I can't give them zero stars, I wish I had read these reviews before I took my bike in to have a tune-up done, Because all the reviews are right all they want to do is sell more parts even if you don't need them. Without even asking they just install the parts and try to charge you when you pick up your bike. The tune-up was overpriced and I knew that, I used to do my own, but who has the time anymore? My problem isn't the cost but the way they do business and the rudeness. I will post wherever I can to let everyone know of their poor business practice. Bike emergency on my son's bike. Popped in the store and repaired by the next day. The guy was very helpful (don't remember his name) and we later returned to purchase bike for my daughter. I hate to contradict my limey predecessor but he must have been high when he reviewed this place. This is one of the last good bike shops in the city, most of the other ones have all become trendy centers for wannabees. The staff is knowledgable and friendly, they have the best repair staff in the business, and they have a great selection of moderately priced bikes. I have been cycling for 40 years and I have been coming here for about 15 years. Street parking is sometimes a problem, but there is a lot behind the building that you can use. Also, if you want "comradeship" why the hell go looking for it in a bike store? Buy a dog instead. read more

I came in here after a really shitty experience at a different bike store. But I've been back a few times and it was awesome both times. Jim and Nate are hilarious and probably better at their jobs than anyone I've ever met. I brought my girlfriends bike in to get fixed and they did it on the spot, I was expecting to drop it off and pick it up later. I'm pretty sure they fixed 5 more things they didn't charge me for. Nice people. Professional, courteous and exceeded my expectations. I had to have a tube replaced, my second in as many weeks, and went here due to convenience of location. There were two men named Jim, both friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I had glass in my tire, and Jim spent over an hour picking out over 25 pieces of glass so my new tube wouldn't be destroyed immediately. The other Jim spent time researching new tires and tubes for me which would be tough against the elements, and not so tough on my wallet. My repairs were done in just over an hour and I was back on the road! I would definitely recommend Edgebrook Cycle to anyone and everyone!!! Thanks, guys! read more

Stopped in to Edgebrook Cycle for my first time, looking for a new bike shop since our local ones closed. Immediately upon entering I was asked by Chris how he could help me. He proceeded to answer all my questions, expertly explained what I needed clarification about, sold me only what I needed and gave my bike a quick check-over (all the while bantering knowledgeably and interestingly about rock and roll). I was impressed and very happy about the service and expertise delivered in a friendly manner. I dropped in there because I had a flat and also figured I might as well get a tune up on my bike. The guy working there was extremely nice and helpful. Also asked about a few products. Again very helpful. He offered to do the repair and tune up while I waited, but I had other things to get done so left it with him. Finished it the next day. I rode my bike out of there. Very friendly and very helpful. I don't understand the negative reviews. I almost went somewhere else because of them. Glad I didn't. They were great. I would definitely recommend them. read more

Bought a cheap bike for my girlfriend for 180$ because she is gonna use the bike 10-15 times a year. I assembled it and took it to the shop for adjusments. The old guy working over there told me the bike is a mess and it's gonna cost me 120$ to adjust everything. I told him that's 3/4 the price of the bike but he made me feel like I'm gonna kill someone if I don't adjust the bike like he told me and it's gonna be 2-3 hrs of work. Took the bike at another bike shop, the adjusment was 17$, 15 minutes... Rip off, stay away from this place. The old guy might seem nice, but he is hungry for money read more

I've been going here for years, and always get good service. They are a family run business which has been around for years. You may pay a little more for a tuneup, but they will never try to sell you something you don't need. They are closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, so plan accordingly. read more

I met my friend Jeff at Caldwell woods for a bike ride up to the Botanic Garden. When I arrived all ready to ride, I noticed that I did not place the front wheel in my car. I called the shop and was greeted by Mary on the phone. She told me to come on over as they could rent me a wheel for my road bike. The rental fee was nominal, left my credit card with them and got my ride in. Friendly people at the shop, good selection of bikes and a nice Moltini jersey on display as well. When I was looking for a bike, I specifically wanted to go to Edgebrook Cycle as its close and I like supporting local businesses. Also, my wife got her bike there and she had a good experience. However, being a good Yelper, I came here to look at the comments and was disappointed to see a number of low reviews. Based on those reviews, I almost went somewhere else but decided to see what it was like for myself. I'm glad that I did. My experience was definitely closer to the people that have given them a high rating. The woman at the desk was very friendly and asked me what I needed. She asked some specific questions to get a better feel for the kind of bike I wanted and made a couple of recommendations. They have a really nice selection in a lot of price ranges, so I had a lot to choose from. I ended up getting a bike, lock and helmet. My transaction was quick and easy. A couple of thoughts: Price: When I got home, I compared the price I got for my bike to other prices on the internet and the price I got from Edgebrook Cycle was lower than anything I found. I found the helmet for lower prices on the internet, while the price for the lock was lower than what I saw on the internet. Overall, the prices for what I got were very fair. Customer Service: My customer service experience was great. As I wrote, the woman that helped me was very friendly. She asked good questions, made some good recommendations and was very polite and helpful. While they were prepping my bike, a couple of other customers came in and all of them were treated well. Obviously, like most Yelp reviews, this is based on a sample size of one, so take it for what it's worth, but I'd definitely come back here if I needed to buy a bike. read more

This is the best bike shop I've been to in Chicago. I took my bike here several weeks ago because my rear wheel was catching on the brake caliper. I assumed it was out of true and was prepared to pay for a full tune-up -- and even suggested as much to the service staff. They could have taken my money, but instead, they merely adjusted the caliper, which was out of alignment. Ten minutes later, that and a couple other minor adjustments put my bike back into near-new riding condition, and they charged me far less than a full tune-up. They made a customer for life that day with their outstanding customer service. I've already been back to buy a trunk bag and rack, and I will be coming here for all my maintenance going forward. read more

This place is terrible. They are over priced on everything, even for replacing an inner tube. In May, I paid $13.25 for a new inner tube because mine popped. They replaced the part where you pump your tires with air. Today, I walked in to put some air, and on my back tire, that piece where I put air broke. It fell off of my bike. And now they want me to pay another 15-20 dollars for a new inner tube? No thank you. Never coming here for anything again. read more

I've been buying all our family bikes here for the last 25+ years. All have great bikes, reasonably priced. Service has been quick, often free or for nominal cost for little stuff like brake adjustments, etc. Just bought a tandem two days ago and they were very helpful in correcting a problem with its fit. Great selection, sensible advice. Great neighborhood resource, all at the head of a 20 mile bike trail! read more

I've been to many bike shops throughout the city and it is my opinion that this local ma & pa shop have the best selection of bicycles. I've been coming to this shop as a kid when they used to be at another location just around the corner and they may be stubborn at times but they're not stupid. I checked out 5-6 other bike shops just before buying my new bike just to keep them honest and sure enough they had a better bike selection at lower prices than anywhere else I could find. They have a great selection of bikes and accessories and a very helpful staff. They are very knowledgable and have a large inventory of parts on hand. I am fairly hands on but I like to have a good service department I can go to when an issue is over my head. I went there after bouncing around from one bike shop to another in the area having issues get only partially resolved or poorly done. I have never gone in there and not had my issue fixed properly and promptly. It is so relieving to have a bike shop I can trust and have recommended them to several friends. read more

I go to this bike shop out of necessity only. It's close and convenient. I feel like the owner's think it's bad business to be friendly and helpful. I want to love them. They're kind of a cute couple, but again, I try to avoid the place because they make me feel as if I've been gouged every time I walk out with a purchase.
