Neil and co are happy to interpret my probably-less-than-helpful instructions and produce frames that fit the bill. Whether I've dropped off a massive A0 print or I've turned up with an engraved plaque with a slightly odd message on it, they've not batted an eyelid and have got on with the job of creating bespoke frames for my needs. You can also buy artwork, and while to be honest the selection isn't my sort of thing (lots of scenes of Edinburgh, and women lounging in silk dresses) it's still useful to know that it exists. I've no idea if the price is reasonable, but as an example, I recently got an A2 print framed with a mount and nice looking black frame - custom sized to fit my print - and it cost £70, which seemed fair. It also only took 2 days to do. In short, Fastframes is a good resource and no doubt one I'll have to call upon in the future.

Sure, this place is a little pricey, so I wouldn't pop in for every day stationary or office stuff, but if you're looking for something in particular, it would be a good place to pop your head in. I went in seeking sealing wax... because yes, I happen to find wax sealed cards delightful and was happy to see they had a few options. Again, tipping towards the higher price side of things, but they had real wax sticks and not the plasticky "hot glue gun" wax seal knock offs. Kudos. They also seem to have a variety of prints and canvases downstairs, but I must admit, i've never ventured down. I usually run in here in the midst of some crafting emergency, so there isn't much time to snoop. Service has always been friendly and helpful, if a bit quiet.

So this one had a lot to live up to. It's definitely catering to a completely different taste, as I'd say these frames are so understated they hardly draw attention from the painting itself. There're some wonderful paintings by a certain artist the shop seems to be featuring at the moment. Trust me to forget her name. My point is I was more interested by those than any of the frames. There's also some nice jewellery in a centre display, which is moderately priced and unusual-looking enough to buy.

But then my friend's photo appeared in the gallery's window with a wee price tag on it (all very exciting!). And I guess that's when I started believing in its gallery status. It is still, undeniably, a place full of bits and bobs. There're paintings, photographs and glasses that are made out beer bottles (they look cooler than they sound, I assure you). They're not just a gallery, though, as they also do framing. And, I guess if you're a Marchmont-er, it's a pretty interesting place to just stop in on. Just for the novelty. Or just because something in the window might just catch your eye. I'm quite persuasive and could go on for a few more hundred words on why you should check it out. These are fairly reasonably priced and there is a good range of items on offer ensuring that it will probably stock any home essential you are on the hunt for. It doesn't get a 4 star rating simply because there are some slightly more superior shops doing a similar trade such as the A&A Traders on Easter Road, but if you don't want the trek, this is still a good shop.

A gorgeous boutique near the bottom of Victoria Street, Red Door sells all kinds of irresistible, DIY gifts from limited edition screenprints, tote bags and tea towels to sock monkeys, stuffed toys and Tatty Divine jewellery. Everything seems to have been made by hand by talented artists and there's a strong proportion of cute and kitsch things that should appeal to indie kids and arty farty types. To top it off, they sell adorable wrapping paper and stationary - including glow in the dark and scratch and sniff cards - making Red Door a one-stop shop for memorable presents.

The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and there's a great range of everything artistic you could possibly need. The only problem I could see was the lack of fabric paints, but that seems to be the way in Edinburgh recently so I don't think it's much of an issue here. But wow. It's also the first shop where I have ever seen the full range of Uni Posca markers on display, especially alongside the fantastic Montana spray paints. So yeah, I have the feeling I will be going back in and spending far too much money on creative supplies that I'm really not very good with. :-D
