I am a U.S. citizen, and our marriage took place in California, USA. After I moved to the UK to be with him, he refused to apply for my spousal visa, which meant I could not legally remain in the UK beyond six months and eventually had to return to California. Since then, he has neither applied for my visa, asked me to return, nor given me talaaq/released me Islamically. He completely abandoned the marriage without closure. My in laws also didn't return or answer any of my calls. So I had no option but to contact some religious mediator located locally to where my husband lives. During my first phone conversation with Imam ABDUL GAFOOR at the mosque, before he knew who my husband was, I explained the entire situation. At that time, I was told that he should reach out to him and that he should be held accountable for what he had done. I was reassured that they would contact him and help mediate the matter. However, after that initial conversation, my experience changed completely. For approximately two months, I repeatedly followed up with Abdul Gafoor and was continuously told to call back "in a few days," "next week," or that they needed more time because they had not spoken to him yet or needed more people involved. Despite all the reassurances, there was never any real progress, resolution, or meaningful help provided. As someone reaching out during an extremely painful and vulnerable situation, I found the constant delays, excuses, and lack of communication deeply discouraging. Instead of support or mediation, I felt avoided and emotionally exhausted by the entire process. I understand that marital mediation can be complicated, but vulnerable women seeking help from religious leadership deserve honesty, clarity, and timely action rather than being left without answers for months.
