It's always lively with a mix of locals, fishermen and tourists all mingling amicably. They do a decent range of real ales and don't mind if you want to take a pint outside and sit on the quay wall to watch the shipping come and go. My favourite is to combine fish and chips from French's or Plattens down the road with a pint of Abbot ale from the Fleece and just sit on the wall watching the world go by. The Fleece is also a great place to watch football and other sport.

You board the boat via a gangplank from the quay and climb down the rather steep steps to the bar area below - it pretty much unchanged since it was a sea-faring vessel with North sea charts stuck around the walls a a tiny bar area seling ales directly from the barrel. Access would be tricky for the very old or infirm but children are very welcome and there's a range of colouring books and games available. They sell a huge range of tasty Dutch pancakes at reasonable prices, all cooked on the ship's galley and service is very good. A unique treasure in this area of the country and not to be missed if you're in the vicinity.

The flag-stone bar area inside is fairly small and it can be difficult to find a table in busy times but the food is lovely and well-priced with a range of daily specials displayed on a blackboard plus a normal bar menu too. Beers are well-kept tending to come from the Woodfordes stable (Wherry and the like) and the range of wines is decent too. Service is swift and friendly and they have live music some nights too. A bit of a hidden gem.

Characteristic of such pubs, it has no bar but instead drinks are served from a serving window with the beer poured directly from casks lined up in the serving room. The beers are local, Woodforde's but also new brewers too, and are all expertly taken care of and are the definition of perfection in cask conditioning and serving. The food is also excellent and features many local products and comes in ample servings. The pub still retains the flagstone floors, small rooms, and real open fires and absolutely no superfluous decoration or tarting up. This is everything you want in a country pub and a remarkable survivor.

This pub is a joy to visit anytime of the year but does get busy in the summer as it is the only pub in the village. There used to be 3 at one time but they all closed down, only a lot of effort from the locals ensured that the Red Lion reopened and it has probably never been so popular. I found this pub by chance driving along the coast road some years ago and have been back many times since. It has that old world charm and has one of my favourite beers straight out of the barrel usually, Wherry as well as other local real ales on hand pump, (the way it should be) like Nelsons revenge. The food served here is all homemade and I have never had a bad meal, there is also a childrens menu so obviously famillies are welcome not like in the fake Irish bar O'Neills which are adults only, but they only tell you that after taking your money. In the main part of the pub there are not 1 but 3 real fires which are a real joy in the winter months. The pub has been extended and has additional space to the back, partly in their conservatory and partly in another extension. There is also seating outside. From the main bars there are lovely views across the stream and the fields beyond. They have this year added accomadation by way of a number of self catering chalets which all have the views you get from the pub. I have always had a warm welcome when visiting this pub and the locals are friendly as well. I can't rate this pub highly enough. Well worth stopping off if you are in the area or well worth a detour if you're not!!

Serving times can be a little eclectic, so ring ahead if you're relying on them for your evening meal. Recommended. Expect to see the odd priest and church party from the neighbouring Shrine.

It's novel in that there is no bar as such beer is served from a hatchway in the front room. Beers are mainly from the Woodforde's stable, Wherry etc, and very well-kept. Novelties include Nelson's Blood a spirit made on the premises which is worth a try if you're not driving. Food is excellent and there's a fantastic large beer garden out the back with a great children's play area. They also run a BBQ when the weather is fine and various gastronomic events throughout the year. Top class and a hidden gem.

Andrew arranged a one night stay for us here at The Crown...wow I wish it was a few more nights! He had contacted the hotel in advance in order to set up some special surprises for our anniversary. Kelly was the one who assisted him. We both worked in the hospitality industry and were extremely impressed by our entire experience. Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff. They offered us homemade lemonade while we checked in. They escorted us upstairs to our room (#10 I think it was). We walked in and I was floored...they had arranged red and white long stemmed roses, paper hearts strew across the wall above the bed and the desk (paper for 1 year wedding anniversary! This was Kelly's idea when my husband called). There were fresh chocolates on a platter from a local chocolate maker that read "Happy Anniversary" and the lady who walked us to our room told us the champagne was on its way up! Also that we had dinner reservations at the restaurant and we could place our breakfast in bed order that evening as well. This was SO amazing. My husband did call ahead to arrange this but Kelly executed it flawlessly and we felt like a King and Queen! The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I had slept on in over 10 days and the room was fabulous. I couldn't have asked for more! The restaurant was also wonderful. The service was great and the food was amazing. The Crown is a perfect place for a romantic stay in a cozy town by the sea. Thank you Kelly and staff!!!
