I called the "top"5 attorneys listed on google and the only one that didn't immediately say " I can help you, send $$$$$$" was Ed. He actually ask me questions about my situation, making sure I wasn't rushing into something that would actually do further harm to my situation. On top of that we had several conversations just to make sure I was doing the right thing and he fully understood the situation. Most attorneys would have charged for anything past the first conversation. His understanding of the system and his compassion for his clients ( not just the check) is evident when you speak to him. Most important, at no time did he make me feel looked down upon or ashamed. After calling several other bankruptcy offices, Mr. Magauran was the only lawyer that seemed to have my best interests in mind. He gave me free advice regarding my financial situation and I ultimately did not have to file for bankruptcy. When other attorneys in town were trying to sell me on their services, Mr. Magauran was ensuring whether his services were actually necessary. He may not have made any money from helping me, but I certainly intend to repay him by referring others to him. He's also a very approachable and down to earth kind of guy. Allow me to just speak from the heart for a moment. I knew nothing about bankruptcy all I knew was that I was drowning in debt and I continued to make poor choices concerning my finances, simply put I was clueless! When I called Edward Magauran I was confused, stressed, and scared but when I met Him all those feelings went away and I felt safe and aware in his office. Edward is very frank and matter of fact like which is what I wanted, I don't need someone to beat around the bush, I needed someone to take the lead and get my head out from under the water. I wouldn't recommend him...if you're looking for a pleasant and professional experience, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. My husband and I went to his "office" for an initial consultation and were shocked by what we saw. It was a dirty, messy bachelor pad. Clothes were strewn about, there were dirty dishes on the counter and it was totally creepy walking into this situation when we fully expected an attorney's office. This was the first indication that something wasn't right. Our experience in dealing with this attorney was not pleasant. He was quick to take our money and put his interests before ours. His advice to us was based on how it best benefited HIM financially. Bankruptcy is a difficult subject and we were distraught following the foreclosure of our home as a result of my husband's illness. We had hoped to find an understanding, patient advocate who would patiently answer all of our questions, but instead ran into someone who is short tempered, rude, and generally unprofessional. He did not answer questions that he knew would make us think twice about filing-which is unethical, and was not forthcoming about the entire process. What was most shocking and what really upset us was how rude he was to us AFTER he took our money. It was almost as if now that he had us trapped, he didn't need to be polite anymore. I am not sure the positive reviews are accurate or even made by real people. This lawyer does not have the best interest of his client in mind and actually is making our current situation even worse and more stressful that before we filed!!! It doesn't feel like he is supposed to be representing us as paying clients but it rather feels like he is leaning more towards getting more money out of us knowing that we are already in a desperate situation. We have since gotten other legal advice and the decisions this lawyer helped us come to in regards to what to file, doesn't even sound like what would be best for our situation. After I read the review on Edward Magauran , I feel compelled to also share my experiences on Yelp, so a more balanced picture can be presented. I'm a physician working with families that are struggling in life, many of them financially. Thought the years I have referred people to Mr Magauran for legal help. The feedback I received from my patients have always been positive. A grandmother who had to file bankruptcy because of her grandson's problem told me that Mr. Magauran not only charged her much less than other attorneys, but also comforted her not to feel ashamed going through the process . Another person , after reviewing his situation,was told by Mr Magauran that there were ways that he could get out of the hole without filing bankruptcy , and all these consultations were done for free. I imaging even professional can have a stressful day and upset . As Yelp are widely viewed and rely on. I looked over some of the reviews. To respond, yes, I am a real person. Here I am, 4 years later, and life is good. I don't use credit cards, only a debit card. To explain, it took 1 visit to Ed Magauran's office. My husband and I sat there for 4 hours as Ed typed our info into bankruptcy forms. He then filed the forms electronically to the bankruptcy court and we got our case number right then and there. He charged us $300/hour x 4 hours plus the fee to file the case in bankruptcy court. Total cost was $1506 but it would be more now because his hourly rate went up. Thankfully, Mr. Magauran provided the required debt education so we did not have to go hunting for it. His office was paperless with not one piece of paper. So the remarks about clothes and bachelor's pad seem unlike Mr. Magauran. He had a pic of his wife and child. He said he went to high schools to provide debt education. Maybe he has changed but I remember him as cordial and efficient. It does take work on the client's part. I brought my file box of 1 year of receipts, neatly organized by month. The bankruptcy judge, Elizabeth A. Kane, didn't approve some cases because they did not provide the required receipts. We did not sit in court too long, Mr. Magauran accompanied us and the cases before us went quickly. The bankruptcy took 3 months from filing to the time we received our bankruptcy letter in the mail. he is a very strange person. i hired him to help me, but realized that if i went with him i'll hurt my own bankruptcy case because he didn't seem to look out for my best interest so i fired him and hired another lawyer. when i asked for a refund, he kept almost half of the money i paid him because he said he spent some time on my case already which i think is bull, but that's what they will all say right? that's not what was weird... whats strange and weird is that he told me that it'll cost him a stamp to mail me a check for my refund so he'll need to deduct that from my refund and it'll show on the check. who does that? after he did that, i was sure i made the correct decision to FIRE him. i felt that he is talking all strange and sounding like he will not do what's in my best interest so i thought about it for a few nights in regard to switching lawyers. when i decided to actually do it, i was hoping that this decision will not be something that i'll regret, but i knew i did the right thing when he actually charged me for the stamp he'll need to use to send me the refund. i didn't even know if i should be upset or what, but i ended up laughing and was definitely relieved that he is no longer representing me. changing lawyer is expensive and at that time, i really had no money and certainly can't afford to, but after hiring him, i really felt that it is in my best interest to fire him and hire someone else so i actually had to borrow more money to make the switch and to cover what edward charged me (about 1/2 of the case fee i already paid him and that stamp). he was charging the cheapest and i couldn't afford a better attorney so i originally went with him, but he was really strange and made me feel scared about filing for bankruptcy so i knew i should just borrow money and make the switch. read more
