Living in DC where space is a luxury, I wanted to maximize every single 1/8 inch. I drew up plans for an extremely complicated and massive wardrobe closet that did exactly that. Overhead storage space behind faux walls, pull-out back walls, hidden shelves, slits for ironing board and belts, etc. I interviewed about a dozen carpenters and many admitted that they weren't able to tackle my design, or were exorbitantly priced. As I explained to Rich what I envisioned and gave him my blueprints, he lit up at the challenge. As I'm not a woodworker, I don't know what the limitations are and don't like no for an answer without a good explanation and an equally good attempt at getting around it. Rich patiently worked with me for hours on getting the logistics of the design right, pointing out things I forgot to consider. He also came up with a bunch of creative solutions when we came across road blocks. I'll admit, I was a little worried whether he would be able to pull it off at first, but Rich did, and much better than expected. Rich was as meticulous to the construction detail as I was to the design. He sands everything to death, which makes everything so nice and smooth. He knows where to apply pressure to get everything to fit perfectly into an old, non-plumb, pre-war building with lots of pillars and soffits. Remember, I gave him 1/8" error margin to work around everything. Everything lined up perfectly. I found out that Rich comes from generations of carpenters up in New England, so the tricks of woodworking were taught to him at an early age, and he wants to do things the right way, even if it takes a lot longer. Definitely no shortcuts. I was truly impressed. And all at an extremely reasonable cost. I already have plans of how I'd want to utilize him for other projects.
