One of my favorite things to do in a new town or city is check out the local grocery store/supermarket, and this one, THIS ONE, with actual real-live vegan options, is like a dream. Granted, I don't know how to read Dutch, so most of the ingredients were a mystery to me, but I've gotten pretty familiar at spotting the Dutch words for 'milk' 'egg' and 'cheese', so I felt fairly confident. I also have a Rotterdam-born friend with me for last-ditch translation if needed. The variety of foods was overwhelming, in the best possible way! I found an excellent vegan mayonnaise (the mayo was for a potato salad, which turned out excellent and impressed all the picnic-going omnivores), bought a round of Cheesley Mozzarella, and picked up a tiny package of vegan bratwurst, just for fun. I was sorely tempted by the rest of the refrigerated section and naturally by the chocolate aisle--so many amazing looking vegan chocolate bars, including a white chocolate. Whaaaaat?! I would shop here quite frequently if I lived here. A great selection of organic food with a healthy vegan section. If you're traveling through, this is a great store to stock up on a few special vegan treats, and there's vegan/vegetarian cafe right next door if you're hungry.

Sure, they may not want to be known for their cookies, but OMG, their cookies are amazing. I'm talking about the ones near the register. They had some samples out, the husband and I tried a piece, and we ended up buying two. Chewy, amazing, oatmeal raisin cookies. For that alone, go here! Now, beyond cookies, this is an organic shop that is really top notch. They pack a lot into a little store, and I don't have trouble finding things. It's like they actually think about it and designed the store for ease of use (novel concept, I know!). The brands they stock here are fantastic. They sell about 6 types of lentils, a great selection of fresh produce (some interesting, non-traditional veggies, too!), herbs, spices, almond milk, snacks to go, bread, coconut milk and what seems like almost every type of 'super food' out there. Need nuts, goji berries, red quinoa, black quinoa, white chia seeds? Look no further. If you want it and its organic I bet this place has it. And that is a lot more than I can say for some of the bigger shops like Marqt or Eko Plaza. And....that is not all.....wait for it....wait for it...wait for it.....They are open late. What?! Open late? Like, how late? Like past 9pm on a weekday late? Yes. Yes, you heard me. This store is open late enough for you to go to work, go to the gym and then go grocery shopping. That is a minor miracle in Amsterdam. Also, the people that work here are really friendly. All in all, a very good addition to the 'hood. And they are open late!

I almost fell out when I saw that they had a long aisle of gluten-free foods. This market in Den Haag (De Hague) is my favorite market in the Netherlands. I was so happy to see a market that finally had a wider selection of Gluten free items. Most of the time when I go to the market the selection is very limited. I have been to several health food stores in the Netherlands and this store and location impressed me the most! They have stores located all over the Netherlands but I would say this is far most the best one in Den Haag. I think Ekoplaza in Den Haag is much more exceptional than the other locations in the Netherlands.They even promote the use of reusable grocery bags, which impressed me because it's a good environmental choice. I wish more stores would try this smart recycling method. You will also find that most of the regular super markets such as Albert Heijn, also sell a few Gluten-free items. However, my first choice would be to stop by Eko Plaza, plus the selection is much wider in Den Haag.

I find the cheese counter with free tasting quite impressive! There are also a lot of vegan cheese and meat substitutes at the fresh department (I am myself not a big fan of those substitutes considering the fact that they often contain a large amount of of unhealthy fats and are mainly soya-based). You can also purchase by weight nuts, dry fruits and other healthy snacks. Their chocolate department is also quite amazing! The fresh fruits and vegetables counter is a bit deceptive though, despite the choice, doesn't look very good from my point of view. You won't get a lot of help and advice in this store except in the cosmetics department on the first floor and of course at the cheese and deli counters. The prices are quite fair even money-worth for some products, mainly belgian and dutch one, but much less for other, let's say french one for example. Overall, a great organic shop with quite everything you're looking for.

This place is pretty okay for nonperishable "superfoods" - you literally can't walk three feet anywhere in the store without finding six different brands of quinoa. There are lots of tables and comfortable Adirondack chairs out front as well as large cement blocks right by the water to sit on. There is plenty of space for large groups, as well as cozy areas for a twosome. Inside, FFF is basically a warehouse with food stalls, long tables, a brewery and bookstore. One of the most popular things to order here is called a Plank, which is basically a wooden board that they fill with meats, cheeses, tomatensoep, and other bites from a few of the vendors there. You can order them from the stand at the entrance. We stopped in once on a Sunday during brunch time, and almost everyone had a Plank of their own. Our absolute favorite part of this place is that we can enjoy the best cider in the world here; Lightship Cider. Do yourself a favor and get one. It's crisp, fresh, and flavorful. I'm obsessed. Fenix Food Factory is a must-go if in Rotterdam!
