I think I just found my new favorite water sport!
I discovered eFoil Republic through the Get your Guide app. The minute I read electric surfboard I was like, "I don't know what the hell I'm doing or what I just signed up for but eff it! I want to do this. Let's go!"
Days later, I land in Boracay and shortly after settling in, I met up with Chris right outside my hotel. We flagged down an available E-trike (a.k.a. Tuk-Tuk) to get us from Station 1 to Station 2 to where the shop is.
Once checked in, you sign your life away with a few waivers and then it's off to a crash course primer on how to safely eFoil.
While beachside, Chris wanted to know my ideal eFoil stance. A gentle push test determined I have a right foot (goofy) stance. I was taught the basics and how to fall safely if you lose balance. I fell at least 3 times and getting back up onto the board requires upper body strength.
From land instruction, it was off to eFoil over the Sulu Sea with Jonas. Jonas introduced me to the throttle while getting used to balancing on the board with your belly. Depending on comfort level once you're used to that, you come up on your knees where you eventually stand.
One thing I will say is it helps to have some core strength and stability to remain upright on the board. It takes some getting used to but eventually you will get the hang of it.
You wont know until you're done with your session but you are going to get a full body workout. Plan accordingly if you have an active schedule afterwards.
The feeling of flying over water is like no other. If I had to summarize the experience in one word, I'd say it was freeing.
This was one of the most memorable things I've done in Boracay and quite possibly in the Philippines.
Chris and Jonas, Thank You for your excellent instruction and being patient with me. If I find myself back in Boracay, I will be seeking you out! read more
