-authentic Mexican food and drink so far from North America? Well, shucks, that's just great!…read more I found a decent assortment of tequilas and mescal. 'Abuelita' chocolate, and, oh, um, CORN TORTILLAS handmade in CH really caught both my eye and pocket book. Aside from consumables, El Mais sells festive pinatas of various shapes and sizes, earthen ware, arty and funky Frieda Kahlo themed hand bags, and much more! Unable to go into the shop and purchase directly? Well, El M have a website set up for your buying pleasure! Don't forget to check out the band, too. :)

So, when I was done doing my other errand, I popped in and was pleasantly surprised. I was immediately greeted warmly and asked if I needed any help. I told them that I'd just like to look around. The shop is split into the grocery side and the gift/decor side. I happened to be much more interested in the grocery side. It's small but it has a lot... a lot more than I'd found anywhere in Europe in the almost 9 years I've been here. Tomatillos (almost impossible to find in my searches)... fresh and canned, some good quality tequilas, hand/homemade goodies of all sorts. I bought some chips and tamales and I'm really looking forward to trying them. My wife is jealous that I got to go but she didn't... therefore, I know that we'll be back soon.

Yelp Review 2026 #64:…read more I'm not vegetarian and definitely not vegan. But I will dabble with the veg from time to time. Hiltl is popular for being the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world. Here's information I will share that I wish was available before planning to come here. You must make a reservation for lunch/ dinner because that's when they're busy. Breakfast is for walk-ins and they don't do reservations. Hop on their website and be sure you're on the right location because they have several within a 2-mile radius...some on the same street. I went here to try their breakfast buffet. I wasn't sure how busy they got for breakfast so, I got here at 6:30am because I got the wrong information online! They open at 7am. Different locations have different hours. Check their website for actual hours and don't trust review site information because it's wrong! They're not busy for breakfast at all. There's 2 ways to do their buffet. You can pay a fixed price and fill your plate multiple times or go and fill your plate once and pay based on the weight of your food - you get free bread. I did the pay-by-weight option. I have a whole day of eating planned so, I wasn't about to fill up for breakfast. When they opened at 7am, they were still putting the food out one by one. By 7:20, all the food was out which was fine. I was in no rush. The spread includes fresh fruits, cheeses, butter, margarine, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, mango mousse, mango chia pudding, banana chocolate brownie crumble, a pear dessert (with cream, vanilla and orange), rosti, scrambled eggs, potato salad, tomato and mozzarella salad, beets, chickpeas, olives, couscous, corn salad, olives, asparagus, green peas, feta cheese, hardboiled eggs, curry salad, dolmades, broccoli and edamame, artichoke salad, bulgur salad, tabbouleh, orecchiette tofu salad, Thai salad, hummus, guacamole, muhammara, etc. They have 6 types of bread. Slice a piece and toast it yourself. Vegan and vegetarian food tend to taste strongly of coconut/ coconut milk and I don't like that. My favorites from the buffet include chocolate mousse, mango mousse, banana chocolate brownie crumble, dolmades, asparagus, orecchiette tofu salad, and Thai salad. I got a mango lassi to drink which I didn't like. It had curry powder. Service was pleasant. The restaurant was clean.

Imagine telling someone in the 1800s, one day people will voluntarily eat tofu and then proving them wrong for over a century. The buffet system is dangerous because you pile it high, weigh it, and dig in. Honestly a fantastic concept. Great location near the train station too, which is helpful because you may need immediate transportation after accidentally eating your body weight in all the options.

The restaurant was nearly empty and they tried to sit us in a a two-seater so crammed in to the next one, we had to ask to be reseated. The second one was only slightly better. I ordered pulled pork tacos, which came with fries, and my husband ordered the cheeseburger and fries. He deemed the burger mediocre and enjoyed the fries. My three pork tacos looked great. The flour soft shells were fresh, the pulled pork was tasty but COLD. I had a glass of decent Pino Grigio. My husband had tap water. Our waiter never came back to check on us. We walked up to the bar to ask for our bill. The guys said, Thanks, have a good day." I said, "We need to pay." Our bill was $60!" Suffice it to say we were disappointed. Don't bother!

Full of framed photos with the likes of the Three Stooges, Marx Brothers, young Mel Gibson (with a splash of mustard up his nose making it look like a big booger), and a ton of other yellowing photos which are clearly from a kit purchased in the 80's. My cheeseburger came with old bay seasoned fries. Not a bad touch! The burger however was not seasoned and ridiculously overcooked to the point that Ronald McDonald would have given the chef an A+ for food safety. No germs or flavor could possibly have survived that level of heat exposure. A shame really as the decor is sort of comforting, the way your favorite old jeans are. It's a feel that most Americans would recognize from their childhoods, and it makes me wish they gave a shit about the food. Or perhaps that is part of the nostalgic American theme they have going? What really ruined it was that they charged us for tap water. Our waitress even went as far as letting it slip that it's at her discretion to charge or not. She admitted that had we ordered more food or alcohol, she would not have charged us....and she said this as if it made sense?! So to sum it up, we were penalized for not having bigger appetites or drinking problems. Their discriminatory policy in regards to charging for tap water alone are grounds alone for not going here. If that isn't enough, I would think the bad food should convince you.
