Came here after a show at the Piccadilly. Really fun environment with delicious food! We were visiting the US, Colorado. And I was a little nervous about trying our Mexican food in a new country but we were pleasantly impressed. The papa's had so much flavor. read more

This spot had surprisingly good Mexican food and a nice selection of hot sauces. We enjoyed two kinds of tacos, fish and pork. Tacos were the right size, enough for two big bites each. Pork topped with onions and green chillies were my favourite. Fish toppings were flavorful. The nachos were cooked well with loads of toppings. Generous serving of guacamole, jalapeños, cheese, beans and your choice of protein. We had the chicken tinga, delicious! Jalapeño poppers were okay. Red jalapeños and cream cheese, quite large. The salsa verde dipping sauce was tasty. Michelada was a nice accompaniment to the meal. The downside would be the lack of safety measures as staff didn't wear masks or keep distance from anyone. In fact we saw one sit down at a booth with another group of customers. A little unnerving given the current situation. Otherwise a nice place to grab a drink and bite to eat. read more

Seriously good food! Definitely get Jimmy's margarita...much better than house. Friendly, attentive staff.

-Went there for a birthday. Music was good but too loud unless you want to be yelling to the person next to you to have a conversation. Lesson: don't go here for dinner if you want to have conversation with your friends. -A reservation was made; they said we'd be on two close tables, but failed to mention that there's a huge wall in between so our party was basically split. Lesson: don't go there with a party of more than 7. -The staff would take forever to attend our table. The food took even longer to come. When it did, we discovered they messed up our order. It took over 45 minutes for us to get our dishes and the lucky few who did get the right order had already finished eating. We felt trapped and ended up spending so much time there waiting, we got all tired and had delayed our subsequent plans. Lesson: don't go there hungry, don't plan on anything coming at a reasonable time, and don't plan on making any reservations/shows after. -Given how hungry we were and the especially longer delay of one of the quesadilla dishes, the staff said they'd give it on the house because of the inconvenience and delays. However when the check came, they charged us for it and when we asked why, they said we wasted too much food because of all the wrong orders...mind you, they were the ones that took down the wrong orders even though we had confirmed at the table what they were to be. Lesson: don't believe anything the staff promises you; their manager may veto it and blame your party for their mistakes. Personally having worked in the service industry, this place was a disappointment. Went to the "speakeasy" in the basement. +1 star for friendly staff, but the cocktails are overpriced. £9 for a "cocktail" where the bartender just pours the ingredients into a glass plus an uncommunicated service charge, will land you at £12.65 a drink. My friends told me that this place used to have really rubbish service, but that they would put up with it for the yummy mexican food(!) However it must have improved because when I visited, the waitresses were friendly, speedy and got everything right. So basically everything is good. I loved the nachos - next time I might just order more nachos for my main. I tried the fish tacos too - they came with a large lump of salad and were really good. While many of my fellow Yelpers have reviewed this place i'm going to toss my 2 cents in as well. El Camion Mexicano is an interesting little place with an eclectic feel, elaborate hot sauce bottle collection and pretty tasty food. I've been on a it of a search for 'the best of' foods in London. I must say this is pretty good and enjoyable. We had the place all to ourselves due to the time we chose to visit. Our server was nice and attentive. The guacamole was good and the tortillas were warm and crispy as you'd hope for in a Mexican restaurant. I found the chicken tinga quesadillas were yummy and after a comment from Alex S. I knew the cheese stuffed jalapeños were a must. So the spice was nice and it was an all around good experience so we'll be back. This American Southerner in London has found a new 'will visit again' Mexican restaurant y'all. Now give it a go, amigo! read more

El Camino is a great place to drink, and a pretty mediocre place to eat. Rob, Andrew - maybe you caught it on a good night, but I was taken aback by the miniscule size of the guacamole portion - susanacri; if you had half your portion, then a teaspoonful would be what you'd have eaten it with. In total, we waited an hour for food - half for the starters, half for the main. This was probably because the manager was entertaining his mates that night, and pitchers ('no, sorry, they're for the boss only') were being rushed to his table while customers waited to eat. And waited. In spite of this, we managed to wear the staff down so much with our nagging that we were given two free margaritas each - so our £75 bill for poppers, chips, two enchilladas and four superb margaritas was, supplemented by four more of the same, not such bad value. However, if I'd have had to pay for them, I'd have been livid. The food, as pointed out on Urbanspoon, is d.o.d.g.y. I commented to the waiter that had it come in a box that said 'remove wrapping, pierce film and microwave for two minutes' I'd have been relieved that nobody had wasted ten minutes of their life wrapping it. Think LIDL. Have a margarita here, then head up to Benito's hat on Goodge Street for some great Mexican food. read more

Finally found a Mexican joint in London that I was pleasantly surprised by! And thus, El Camion will be my go-to whenever I have a craving. The nachos are out of this world delicious. And the tortilla chips are much closer to what you get in Texas than what you would get at other places in London. That being said, paying for chips and salsa? Erg. But I'll forgive you, El Camion, for being tasty in every other regard. We had chicharones with guacamole for starters as well, and those little fried pig skins were perfect. I had the Yucatan Beef burrito as my main, "wet" (read: enchilada sauce), with rice and beans. While the rice could have used a bit more time cooking, the flavor was good, and the black beans were really tasty. I wouldn't get the enchilada sauce again as it bordered on sourish, but otherwise, the burrito was fab. But seriously... the nachos. Note: this review is for the basement bar and not the restaurant. While out on the town one Saturday night, my friends and I stumbled upon the basement bar in el camino. This is one of those places you have to know about to find as there doesn't seem to be any signage nor would the staff upstairs tell you there is a loungey DJ bar in the basement. The result was a decently crowded place in the heart of soho that still had a free booth or 2! It may or may not be one of those members only places, but just keep walking down the stairs like you belong and you should be grand:) The International crowd was definitely partying it up. Excellent excellent margaritas. Strong and well mixed. I'd go here again for sure for late night drinks! read more

Seriously, London? Once upon a time, a friend of mine told me a story about when he and his now wife were visiting her family in London. Apparently she wanted Mexican, and he was dubious as London is not close to Mexico. He also grew up in California, land of Mexican. They had Mexican somewhere (I still don't know where), and apparently the food was appalling, which led him to warn me, "There's no good Mexican in London." Which to be fair, had seemed to be true for awhile. Last night, after drinking copious amounts of beer, a bunch of us were going to dinner, and of course many of them wanted a curry, as good British people do. My partner and I are always down for going for Mexican instead. Because hey, once I found a good Mexican, I want to return. We managed to convince people, but instead of our usual Mexican hang out (because yes, we already found an amazing one), a friend recommend El Camion. Well, except he couldn't remember the name, so I had to find it online. I was a bit dubious about a new Mexican, due to the mantra my friend drilled into me before I moved. Well, I think he just had something terrible, because El Camion turned out to be a flavorful Mexican wonderland! It was definitely more like the Taqueria style Mexican of California than a more upscale, interesting Mexican fusion that I also enjoy. The tacos were terrific. The enchiladas looked great. I had a bite of someone's burrito which was fantastic. I ordered the side of spicy potatoes, and they were the perfect amount of spicy. Their black beans are also fabulous. I'm definitely coming back here. The only problems is that now I have to choose between two delicious Mexican restaurants. And next time, I'm getting the flautas and the enchiladas! read more

This area gets weirdly dead around midnight unless you want to go to a nightclub full of sweaty drunk people. After eight hours on a shitty plane, all I wanted was booze. The doorman was kind of an asshole (probably because I'm American) but he warmed up after a minute or two and let us in. The margaritas were on point, not watered down and the nachos were tasty. Prices were right on. The service was BUUUUUUUUUUUULLSHIT. I know service in Europe is less hands on than the US just due to the lack of tipping culture but there's no reason to look directly at an empty glass and then just ignore it. I'm a server and even on my worst day I've never been that terrible at my job. If the service wasn't so bad I would consider this worthy of visiting again. While I don't regret my initial visit I wouldn't rush to return either. read more

I was so excited to go here for my friend's birthday (I love Mexican food, my family is Texan, and I've tried countless places, so I know a good Mexican when I have it!), but was extremely disappointed from the get go. My friend had booked a table for 16 way in advance, and the first thing the hostess said to her was "do you want the tables pushed together?" So the table wasn't ready. So we had to wait for that to be done, and then she was told by the waiter that our group of 16 only had an hour and a half because they had smaller groups coming in later. Throughout ordering (inevitably people were late, it's a large group and a half-decent restaurant should be prepared for that with a large group) we were constantly questioned with things like "are there more people coming?", and at one point the waitress sat next to my boyfriend annoyed because somebody took a little bit too long to order something. Also when she was asked about the tacos (which, notably, were only available in soft shell), was confused as to what we meant when we asked how big they were (£25 for 12 tiny tacos is far overpriced). When our cocktails arrived they were all half-empty and slammed down, and our burritos arrived as dry wraps with rice on the side, which wouldn't be so much of an issue if there was enough rice to go with the wrap, and half of the sauces mentioned in the menu were actually detectable in the flavour. I can't speak for everybody's food, but I can say that of mine and my boyfriend's. But the tacos I saw looked tiny and not worth the money at all. At one point, the waiter (who was actually lovely), told my friend we had to hurry because they needed the table, but could go downstairs, and he agreed to wait until the one person left eating was finished. Less than 30 seconds later, the rude waitress returned and demanded we move in 3 minutes. When my friend said "I can't just tell him to get up and move his food downstairs" she huffed and puffed and made my friend feel uncomfortable. Given this was my friend's 21st birthday, most of us decided to just shift downstairs because she felt so uncomfortable and wanted to get to the next place. However once we got downstairs, after being ID'd and having to put our information in a book because of their "licensing laws", we waited about 10/15 minutes before having the bill slammed on the table by another waitress who rudely snapped "make sure you pay that before you leave". When I looked at the bill, I noted it had a 20% service charge on it!!!! This then upset my friend further, as everybody declared we would not be paying for such horrible service, and her friend went and dealt with the situation while she went and paid almost £10 for a ridiculously small cocktail. From working in hospitality for a great deal of my life, I understand that larger groups bring more revenue, and as a well behaved group with a table of four behind us (they were there when we got there and hadn't moved when we were kicked off our table, for the record) bellowing for our entire meal, I feel extremely offended. All in all a horrible experience, with mediocre food, horrible service, and sub-par cocktails. read more

It had been a rough month. I love my mom as much as the next girl, but a month of her is a long time. So on the day she headed home, leaving me to fend for myself in London for a few days, I did what any sensible Californian girl would do, I found Mexican and started drinking. Now the drink part is irrelevant to this review, but the Mexican is not. It is good. I mean really good. I mean so good I am actually passing on the info of El Camion Mexicano to any number of friends of mine who might find themselves in the SoHo area. I got the chicken burrito, my staple at any Mexican place I go. It was big enough to leave me totally satisfied, but not so big I felt as if I would burst. Plus, I think they put mole in the meat. The music was great (ideal for a late 20 - early 30 something crowd!) and we had booked a nice booth so we could chat as well as boogie. First off, don't confuse this with El Camino. They are a world apart (although fairly close geographically) and depending on the organiser's ability to text accurately you may find yourself in a dingy bar instead of the bright lights of El Camion. My visit to EC was prompted by London Cocktail week as they were offering £4 tequila cocktails and £4 taco plates. A meal and a drink for less than a tenner in the middle of Soho? Sorted. Alas, it was not meant to be. I got there and met my friends which raised our first issue. We have booked a table for 4 and were crammed onto a table for two. Luckily we managed to annex a couple of tables as people left (or perhaps were pushed out by our growing group) and got all 8 of us (quite literally 4 friends wandered by on accident and joined in) seated somewhat comfortably if very cosily. Then we tried to order. I will say the waiter dude was very friendly but he highlighted one key issue. The London Cocktail week deal was only available at the bar downstairs. No worries, I like a good basement bar as much as the next alchie but as I got up to move down, I was informed that there was a tequila tasting going on which was running a couple hours late. As a side note, I've got to wonder what exactly was going on down there that made a tequila tasting overrun by that long. To be honest, I'm quite jealous but that's beside the point. We had a bit of a dilemma as we had to be downstairs to get the deal, but we weren't allowed downstairs. Our reasonable suggestion of providing the deal upstairs was met with a firm "no" and little explanation which didn't start us off well. However, as we were entrenched we switched tracks and ordered from the main menu. I selected a pork burrito (in my quest to best Eamon B for London burrito knowledge...however I'm still just a grasshopper compared to him) accompanied by a top shelf margarita. So let's see how they did... The burrito was good. Pork was tender with good flavour, the sour cream and salsa well layered, and the rice nicely done. Overall, it was perfectly fine to kill those hunger pangs in my belly. But not completely. Luckily, when dining with those of the fairer sex I find that there is always more food to be had if you are willing to scavenge. Even better, I have no shame when it comes to devouring leftovers so I promptly finished off the remaining third of a burrito left uneaten by Becky H and even polished off the veggies (it's not meat but it'll do in a pinch) from Claire F. What I really wanted was a plate of tacos for £4 but c'est la vie. Sated, I moved on to my margarita that was left untouched in my food frenzy. Overall, I'll say that the margarita was well made (not as good as Max B's but then again few things are) with a great balance of tart citrus flavours and mellow tequila. Minor problem. It was served in a tall glass. I'm old fashioned, I like my margaritas in a margarita glass rimmed with salt not looking like a cocktail with a straw! Overall, I think the good balanced out the bad. So I'll give it the average 3-star rating. Although I'm tempted to knock it down a peg as they charge you for chips and salsa and are stingy with portions. My boyfriend and I were looking for a bite before a matinee and walked by El Camion and decided Mexican sounded awesome! After walking in we stood at the front behind a few guys waiting for take out I assume? A waitress in the back waved us in to sit anywhere. I was so excited because they had one of my favorite hot sauces at the table, Valentina. There was a small menu at the table I was looking through, my boyfriend grabbed one from the table next to us. There were two other people in the restaurant, it was not busy. The waitress came by, dropped off two large menus, and ripped the smaller menu out of my boyfriend's hands and slammed it loudly back on the table next to us and walked off. Me: uhhh, that was weird Him: what just happened? Me: that was weird right? Him: yeah, it was really rude actually Me: ok, want to leave Him: yes No clue what we did to trigger her actions, we were in a great mood and excited for this place. This spot had a good review by Alex whom I trust implicitly, so I was happy to give it a go, being a major fan of Mexicana! I loved the kitschy decor with bottles of chilli sauce lining the walls, and the fun vibe. The menu was pretty comprehensive and the prices reflected the Soho location. We got the large veggie platter with tostadas, tacos, quesadilllas and jaledas (stuffed jalapenos). Everything looked fresh and beautifully prepared. I loved the taste of the food but the chilli sauces on the table tasted flat to me. I would have loved the option of a fresh home-made sauce, which would have elevated this spot to a definite must-return for me. But actually, I probably will come back at some point to try the enchiladas :) read more

I hit El Camino on a stroll through Soho a few weeks back. A friend of mine has always had high praise for the Portobello Road location, but warned about the relatively high prices at the Brewer Street one. I found the service quick and friendly. However - and perhaps it's ingrained in me from living in the US for most of my life and the mountains of food usually served up at the mexican places there - I was mildly disappointed by the three tiny little fish tacos I got! Tasty and fresh indeed, but still for the price (roughly £8, if remember correctly)....not much there. My total bill for 2 beers, tacos and some chips and salsa to start was about £14. A little steep I must say. a nice place to stop in but I would recommend that anyone searching for some tasty Mexican in London would be much better served by hitting Taqueria in Westbourne Grove. yum! read more

The food was very flavorful, loved the nachos... my wife had the enchiladas with chicken tinga, the sauce on the enchiladas was very good but tasted like mole sauce. I had the chorizo quesadilla, I keep forgetting that chorizo in Europe is more like a hard sausage based on Spain's idea of chorizo, not Mexico's. Service was really good, very attentive. Stumbled into this joint a few weeks back after it being recommended by the previous bar we were in. It's located between two sex shops and not signed at all, just go down the stairs and turn left. Cocktails looked great (I only tasted a bit of one and seemed mighty fine) and vibe was a real hoot. Closes at 3am and table service, which actually worked very well. Would definitely come back for late night drinks. I read afterwards that the barman is some famous mixologist and has been on the London cocktail scene for 20+ years. While most of the Mexican restaurants in the UK are pretty dire (Wahaca, Chilango), El Camion FINALLY gave me my FIX for Baja Cali cuisine! First of all, it's an independent and its two owners LOVE this kind of food, so anything born out of passion and hasn't sold out gets my vote straight away. I've been a few times and every time I HAVE to order the Mixed Botanas. It is the BEST way to try a bit of all the best and I love love love the Jaladas til I die. They are breadcrumbed jalapenos stuffed with cheesy goodness and they are addictive. There are also soft flour tacos and tostadas on there. Nice. The tortilla chips are always good to nibble on (they are made fresh every day - I asked) and the burritos are fat, messy and delicious. I especially like them with the spicy enchilada sauce on top. And OH YEAH, try the churros! Not many places serve these but they are GOOOOOOD - enough to tempt you back, that's for sure. El Camion is also a place that KNOWS its cocktails AND their tequila. I trust a place that can mix a cocktail well. I took a friend who is a margarita fanatic and even he agreed that they make a really good margarita, nice on the rocks. You can get them frozen or straight up too. After skimming a few comments about the service, I would say if you're looking for all-American t*ts n teeth service, no you probably won't get it here. London. City of 9 million, give or take. Soho, the amusement epicentre of London, for better or worse - getting a drink after 11pm will be a piece of p... cake, right? Right??? Well, wrong!!! I was following one Yelp recommendation after the other, and either they were closed or would not let me in without a reservation (damn you, Cahoots Bar! ;-) If it wasn't for the lovely bloke Sasha at the also closed Cocktail Trading Co. who sent me off to El Camion I would have gone home without my night cap. Well, four night caps to be precise... The cocktails weren't revolutionary, but solid, the music was house-y / clubby good, the bartenders nice, and a pretty good crowd made this comfortable. I had two Mezcal based cocktails, both pretty good. Not sure whether what was labelled a Hemingway on the bill was meant to be one - while it was pleasant I would not have expected to see Maraschino (liqueur and cherry!) involved with a doble papa... Nothing too sweet, really refreshing! one big YUM! - music was so funnily random to my taste - it was great to dance to and to forget all the troublesome reality. - it was hot and sweaty! Once in a long time, I enjoyed that too! It matched the atmosphere and tipsy, dance-some night. - bar was small. This was my biggest issue. The venue could be bigger, because it was really crowded. Although the bar staff was superbly fast, they struggled with all the customers.. 10 mins waiting for a drink - no problem! My question is - will I remember I went there in two weeks? Probably not... Mmm. Burrito hey? Looking at this place from the outside I first thought: strip joint? I guess it's suffering from the location, but still, they picked the slightly dodgy facade. When I got in there I was pleasantly surprised - quite clean and friendly! (Strip joints are so unclean and unfriendly these days.) There was plenty of seating, pretty decent service, and as Andrew points out, a vast array of amusing hot sauces on the wall. I didn't partake in the Qype staff face off but the 100% pain looked fairly viscious! As for the burrito - this is what only warrants 3 stars. Seemed fairly ordinary to me. None of the wonderful flavour and spice you get in some places. All a little neat and tidy too. A burrito is a dirty feed - there should be sauce splashing all over the plate. And ... £7 odd. Bit pricey for a lunchtime burrito. If I want burrito I'll be going elsewhere, although I'm sure this place will do well being on the south side of Soho, el touristo trappo. read more

Good pork nachos...not as authentic as I would have expected from prior reviews, but tasty all the same. Then nine little tacos to share...we chose the chicken, the mushroom and spinach, and the chorizo. The servers were all nice (not overly...remember you're in London, friends), but yes ...definitely a bit on the slow side. Got a surprise at the till when the bill was £8.44 due to hidden service charge of £0.94, or 12.5%. Used to Mexican food in the USA, this place is really offering a good menu option and the food was really good. The staff was super mega friendly and did go above and beyond to please us. El Camino is a new addition to the growing tex-mex scene in London. I have to say, it is distinctly average. It's mainly let down by it's sloppy service - and some of the dishes are so-so. I always get grumpy with paying more than a couple of quid for a tiny pot of guacamole, and El Camino are guilty of this crime. It's so cheap to make - why are you fleecing people for it? The tortilla chips and salsa are also a bit pricey, for what is probably the easiest starter in the world to serve up. Cocktails - we only tried the classic Margarita - but it was well mixed and they certainly did not skimp on the tequila. However, it got served up in the dullest tall glass - where's my Margarita glass with the salted rim? No show-manship on that front.... The corn tacos come in a minuscule sized portion - my friend had to order some more food just to get close to feeling full! The Burritos however are a different story - very tasty fillings, and the portion sizes are just right. I thought the mix of ingredients was well balanced too - and I've eaten my way round a lot of Burritos in London.... What we really did enjoy was the relaxed atmosphere, the kitsch tablecloths and the excellent display of spicy sauces from around the world! What we liked the least was the over-priciness of some items and the slightly lazy service. El Camino will not blow you away from a culinary point of view , but it is a lot of fun.
