Do NOT be deterred from the outside appearance! Wasn't sure about it myself, but my husband grew up eating "valley" (Rio Grand Valley) Mexican food. Usually he is right. As soon as we entered I knew we were okay! Smells that you know pintos cooking, Mexican music playing, people enjoying a happy hour beer! We had driven all day from Central Texas coast to Lubbock headed to Colorado- exhausted tired of the road. We were met with delight! He ordered the Mexican Plate and I ordered Beef Fajita Quesadillas. We split a large Guacamole Salad. Folks - I know we were hungry but it was all delicious! The guacamole had nice pieces of jalapeno in it and good lime to taste. The food was plated for the a discriminating eye! Beautiful. And flavor was exactly what it should be. Wonderful. Only 4 stars because I thought they needed another staff member. One waitress was working, and I know it was Friday and we came in around 4 for late late lunch early dinner. She was very attentive , but super busy. The bus person was taking care of getting chips to tables and trying to clean tables too. Maybe the person coming on for happy joy was late, or something. I have stopped by El Charro's drive thru twice to pickup breakfast "tacos" to share at the office (they distinguish between burritos and tacos, being larger and smaller versions respectively). Between the first and second visits the price went up, which wouldn't be a big deal except that they don't put any breakfast pricing out on the menu boards. Skip the sausage & egg, bacon & egg are okay, the chorizo & egg are delicious. Another change they made between visits; they used to wrap each "taco" individually (expected), but now they wrap multiple "tacos" together. After the pandemic, nobody wants to take already open food or grab from a "community pot". Not a bad place, but not the only place to get breakfast burrito's for the office. read more

I'm not saying all of Lubbock is like this, but with our server she showed her true nasty colors. As soon as we arrived (our first time visiting) and didn't know if we had to be seated by someone or just sit by yourself. No-one greeted us. Just a lot of customers staring at us. So we just sat, then our waitress came to bring us the menus. She even brought out cold stale chips. My dad asks the waitress if the chips supposed to be cold or not. She nonchalantly says, no the chips are supposed to be hot. Then, my dad asks for hot chips. We order our drinks. Then she comes back to take our order. I get the shrimp soup and my dad gets the tacos. Our waitress didn't even ask me what size soup I wanted and before I could say anything--she hurried off. As we watched our waitress serve others with a bright smiley face, friendly to others and completely forgot about us. Before she walks back into the kitchen (we've sat near the kitchen). My dad flags her down and asks her about our chips. She rudely says, the chips are warming. My dad asks her if she could take our old chips back. She takes it--rolling her eyes. So, a nice guy brings out our food. He warns that my soup is hot to touch and taste. Then, he gives my dad his food. Then, our hot chips come out--so late! We begin eating. The food was extremely bland. Though, my shrimps were big, all the veggies were lacking flavor. My dad mentioned that his tacos were greasy. The Spanish rice is gross--definitely not authentically. I ate one bite of it and it tasted like microwavable bag. Our food was so nasty, we didn't even finish it. Furthermore, our waitress came back to our table to ask if were ok. While my dad was on the phone--he asked our waitress to wait. She quickly moved her body as if she thought my dad was going to touch her. How disrespectful! I ask for a to-go cup for my soup, tell me why she brings out a cup with an opening with a brown bag and I have liquid soup. WTH? Then, my dad asks our waitress for to-go burritos. She whips out her smart device to take the order and asks what kind of meat. We say any. Then, she leaves for a while (again). She comes back with the check and burritos, but no sauce. WTF? My dad gives her his credit card to pay and she rudely snatches out of my dad's hand. She even told her coworkers and they gave us a disgusting look while speaking in Spanish. Then, my dad asks for sauces, but instead he confronts her near the kitchen. She gave him the sauces. We paid and left. Our waitress told another group goodbye, but not us. -------------- I'd like to think the people of Lubbock aren't racist, but this particular waitress was and she showed her true colors. First impressions are number one. It was our first time at the restaurant. My second time in Lubbock and my dad's first time. It's horrible how we were treated, let alone the food, not being fresh. This place was disgusting. Their carne asada had the same texture as ground turkey and was super oily. The beans tasted like they came from a bag and they just warmed it up in the microwave. Our waitress came by once to check on us and didn't even refill our drinks. To top it off, the ventilation system is awful. A customer walks into the restroom, stinks it up, a waitress/host walks in to clean up the mess, LEAVES THE DOOR OPEN, stinks up the entire shop, and proceeds to spray Lysol. Not only did the food taste like crap, the entire restaurant smelled like it too. NEVER coming back to this place again. read more

I was looking for an authentic Mexican food place near our office, and I found the spot. Very reasonably priced. They have delicious margaritas and excellent Micheladas, my favorite. I really enjoy the combination plates the best. Cheese and beef enchiladas are outstanding. The owner's sons work there and are some of the hardest working kids I've seen, great work ethic. It's small , but don't let it fool you. The food is fresh, hot and delicious. Highly recommend. read more

I'll cut to the chase here-cheap food, server was really nice and checked on us constantly, but come on, I literally pulled a hair out of my mouth as I was taking one of the last bites of my meal. I felt it literally slither out of my throat. Our server didn't seem to know how to handle the situation. He kept offering to have the kitchen make me something else to eat, and he said there was no way it came from the kitchen bc there was only males working there. It almost felt like it was being implied that it was my hair, but my hair is much longer,thicker, curlier, and a different color than the hair I pulled from my mouth. I suppose the hair is now a case for Scooby Doo and the Mystery Gang. All's well that ends well- my meal was comped off our total ticket, so no harm, no foul? Delicious and authentic Mexican food. The margaritas are the color of Taco Bell's Baja blast but don't let it turn you off, they were amazing. My dad thoroughly enjoyed his michelada. I got the fajita chicken plate and it was the perfect amount of food, I felt full but not to bursting. My moms cheese enchilada was out of this world. Looking for a breakfast place in Lubbock and dropped in here. Even though we were too late for breakfast they still accommodated by allowing me to order an egg dish. It was very good authentic Mexican with chorizo and potatoes. Flour tortillas were homemade and very good. My GF had a tamale plate with chili Colorado. I am very picky about Mexican cuisine and this is by far one of the best authentic restaurants I have ever been too. Great chips and and the salsa is good. The enchiladas are awesome and the rice is very good. Very well seasoned and the chile rellenos are very well made. The ambience is nice. Not loud. Televisions are spaced around so you can watch, and music plays in the backgrounds. Good place to eat with friends and watch the game or have a cold beer. Keep the menu! read more
