My whole experience here left me confused with regards to the hype that surrounded El Diablo when it opened. Admittedly, maybe the problem is me- I eat vegan, so most of the cheeses and ranch or cheese based sauces that are so talked about are off limits to me. Still, everything tasted kind of bland. For comparison's sake to Chipotle, I got my same order- vegetarian burrito bowl with veggies, lettuce, mild salsa, lettuce, and guac (it sounds kind of boring but somehow at Chipotle every ingredient seems to be individually flavorful. I agree with another reviewer who said that there's a "correct" way to create meals at El Diablo- just... Some of the things you can pair, you shouldn't pair. At the end of the day, my food wasn't "bad," but it wasn't very exciting either. I'll take my Chipotle any day. read more

My favorite. I've been to all three locations and was so happy that El Diablo was finally coming to my area. Chipotle has nothing on them; the quality is noticeable and the flavors are more pronounced. I usually order the same burrito combination everytime, loaded with toppings. About 90% of the time it's flawless but every once in a while you get a new worker building your burrito and wrapping it and there are tons on cracks and it just falls apart when you try and eat it. Regardless, the chips are delicious and you get a lot. If you get a drink, they have a unique assortment of beverages (I personally like the lemonade a lot, it's very fresh tasting). I always just get take out and go home, even at the most packed times it is only about 10 minutes to get in and out so there's really no reason not to go. read more

I enjoy El Diablo and really wish they had one near me in Northern Virginia. I have been twice now in Newark! The food is always fresh and they have a great selection of options to top your burrito, salad or burrito bowl! You can totally make your own combination or they offer suggestions on their menu board. I have never heard them say "no" to anyone. You want steak and chicken - no problem...... So - I have had a bowl with chicken and one with pork. Both great. I especially like the pineapple salsa - it has a bit of a kick to it. They have many sauces to choose from as well and they will let you taste them - just ask. They put drops on a lid of a cup and you can dip your finger in them ...... Their fountain drinks are all natural - interesting - the lemonade is delicious. If you are in an area - Main Street of Newark or Wilmington or elsewhere and see El Diablo - don't hesitate to stop in and try it out! It's quick, fresh and delicious! read more

Love this place. It's in the same mold as Chipotle and all the others but they mix it up with variety. There are many options. I love that if you order "for here" you get your bowl in an actual glass bowl instead of cardboard. Their steak is very tasty and really sets everything off. The shredded pepper jack cheese and red walnut dressing give everything a little spice. It only loses a star due to the somewhat troublesome parking situation and there not being many seats/table if you want to eat in. read more

Stopped here while driving down to DC. The portions here are YUGEEE. I think my bowl was larger than my head. Get it to share, or to take home and feed you for the week. It's overpriced, even with the large portion sizes. Definitely not authentic, but then again it's not like it's try to be. The meat is super juicy and all the ingredients taste fresh. Really not loving that sour cream though. Sour cream should be spooned out in huge dollops, not shot out of a bottle like whiz cheese. read more

Couldn't have asked for a better first experience at El Diablo. The line was out the door but we decided to wait. I ordered the pork bowl with bacon (really crisp highly recommend) and different salsas. The staff was very attentive and went over the different sauce combinations with me. Yes it is a few dollars more than chipotle, but you can't match the quality of El Diablo. This is coming from a chipotle fanatic. The thing I appreciate most about El Diablo is their wide variety of options. Far surpassing the nearby Chipotle, at El Diablo you can choose from a great variety of proteins, and the number of toppings is far superior as well. Service here is relatively fast, but for some reason, I always finish my meal feeling underwhelmed and dissatisfied. Perhaps a lack of flavor in those plentiful options, or maybe I'm just ordering the wrong thing? Either way, I often feel let down by my meals at El Diablo. read more

Beautifully eccentric modern decor, with a constant musical beat playing overhead. Decor has an overall chic feel and very inviting atmosphere in which to dine. Burritos are delicious thanks to the plethora of fresh options to add to your meal. Similar to chipotle, the brand offers a healthy, safe-for-the-planet type of menu. Plenty of healthy additives to include on any bowl or burrito (which may I add, are enormous!). Fresh pineapple salsa, pico de gallo, cilantro, wide variety of meat and vegan options,etc. You may also add chips and guac/queso to the meal which just tops it all off. Only complain about the food itself is that the meat tastes bland (probably baked with few spices?) from the multiple experiences I've had with the meal. Rice also could use something to make it pop in the burrito. Maybe that's just my used-to-chipotle palette expecting adobo marinated chicken and cilantro-lime rice, not sure. The extra fresh ingredients thought do more than make up for this. Overall, great experience, exactly the place for relatively cheap (about 1.5 times what you'd pay at chipotle) and VERY fresh food. So, there is quite a bit of hype surrounding this place but I must say it is quite deserved. Very similar idea to chipotle but with a twist. A couple more meat options (I'm vegan, sorry, I don't remember specifically what) with the typical salad, bowl, burrito, etc. I got the black bean salad with various salsas, one of them being pineapple. None of their dressings/sauces are vegan, however, my salad was so flavorful on it's own without the dressing, it wasn't needed - it was extremely flavorful on its own. Their fountain drinks are not the typical coke/pepsi. They are more along the lines of teas and random juices. I didn't try any so I can't comment on how they were. Overall, I was extremely pleased. My only complaint is that some of the tables were dirty but they were pretty busy when I went and the table turnover was so quick that there wasn't really time for staff to come from behind the counter and wipe them. read more

In my opinion, el Diablo is the best quick serve Mexican restaurant on Main St. they offer all the standard proteins in addition to mahi mahi, mushrooms, and chorizo (mahi mahi is my favorite!). They have a lot of options for toppings including pink pickled onions which are AMAZING and their honey jalapeño dressing is my favorite part of the meal (not spicy at all). Portioning is really good relative to price, I almost always take about half of my meal home and eat it later. read more

This is the best burrito restaurant that I've ever been to. If you think Chipotle is good, you will love this establishment. You can't go wrong with your selection here. I have had the burrito, quesedilla, burrito bowl, tacos, and salad. I have also had every meat option they offer, chicken, pork, steak, fish, lamb, and mushroom. My favorite selection here is the steak burrito, with mushrooms, taco guac (which is half the price of a normal order of guacamole), goat cheese, corn salsa, lettuce, sour cream, hot peppers, spicy pico, cilantro, and shallot lime vinaigrette. Again, you can not go wrong here. You can also add bacon, guacamole or chorizo to any order. This place is a can't miss. read more

I go to this location and the Marsh rd. location equally. It is my favorite place ever, and best food ever. I'm not ashamed to admit I go at least once a week. Very fresh, with great flavors, pepper varieties, and sauce/dressing varieties. I'm sad that one week I went they raised the price 50 cents, then the next week it was another 25 cents higher. But... I still pay it anyways. The line is always out the door at both places, which shows how great it is. The Newark location does not have enough seating sometimes. Killer burritos and a wide array of topping choices. This place reminded me of my favorite burrito place out if Denver, Illegal Pete's. I had the steak burrito and added pineapple and green salsa and it had an incredible flavor. I also tried the pork which was super tender and flavorful as well. The staff here is also beyond friendly and helpful, especially as this was our first visit and were not sure how the ordering worked. There are a million TexMex places on Main Street but if you're looking for something a little different I would check out El Diablo. The flavors are much different than Chipotle or California Tortilla. Ingredients are cooked in much less oil so the raw flavor of the food comes out - which can be seen as a positive, but it is a bit more bland as well. The chicken is drier than other burrito places, but if you add chorizo it makes up for it. Best meat I've had here is the pork. I also recommend adding feta or goat cheese, along with the chipotle mayo. Pineapple relish is my favorite topping. Portion sizes are huge, definitely enough for two meals or one huge meal, which makes up for the price that is a few dollars higher than the other burrito places. Service is fine and fast. During peak times seating is very limited, but they open the windows during the summer for open air seating. read more

I would not recommend this location. One of the workers by the name of "Melissa" (or so she claims her name is) screamed at my family for not "social distancing" in the restaurant while trying to order. We all had masks on, and we were not even standing in line. More like collecting ourselves before ordering. My two sisters, who have never been to El Diablo before were trying to understand the menu and I was explaining to them how it works. She said we were "breaking the law". She made a scene in front of several other customers. The worker was extremely disrespectful and rude! She didn't ask nicely, she barked orders at us like she was the police. She blamed it on the background noise in the restaurant...Maybe if you have to scream at your customers you should turn the music down! It does not need to sound like a club on south beach in Miami. Overall though, it was her tone. When I confronted her about it she didn't apologize, she slapped my order together like it was a chore. I don't have to eat at El Diablo. I could go to chipotle across the street. I came to this location to support local businesses during our global pandemic. If she had an issue when how we were social distancing, she could have asked nicely. Not created a scene. Great food, terrible staff! read more

El Diablo has more options that Chipotle, but not in a way that works, which is the main distinction between the two restaurants. At Chipotle, you can put everything on offer together in a single burrito, and it will still taste great. At El Diablo, the same is definitely not true; you have to be careful with your dressing combinations. My first try -- a pork burrito with pineapple habanero salsa -- didn't go well, despite my trying to keep to the recommendations on the wall. It was runny and sweet, not spicy at all like I'd expected from a "habanaro" salsa; the pork was moist but overall somewhat flavorless; and they really skimped on the cheese. My second try -- a mushroom quesadilla, which I dressed only with the basics (cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc) -- was better, but it didn't leave me with a memorable impression, and it wasn't good enough that I'll order it again. I think the beef options probably taste the best, but they're also the most expensive choices. Regardless, I'll probably keep returning on days that I crave tortillas and the line at Chipotle is longer than at El Diablo. I'll probably choose Bahn Mi over El Diablo on days that I'm not set on having burritos. And when I do go to El Diablo, I'm definitely going to avoid their bottled sauces (which I think lead to runniness and a greater risk of bad flavor combinations) and stick to the "spicy" (but not actually spicy) cheese quesadillas. read more
