We saddled up at the bar one early Sat. evening after a long day of wine tasting. We heard a few comments about this place and how popular it is with the locals so we thought we ought to give it a whirl. Although a bit disappointed that they didn't have live music and the house music playing was barely audible. Oh well. Turns out the live music is on Fri. nights. We were looking for a little sustenance to balance out the wine intake from earlier in the day. TRUFFLE FRIES were oh so delish! Sadly, I could house the entire plate so I'm glad I had my girl to help out. The FRIED EGG PIZZA was tasty although a bit undercooked for my liking (too doughy) but overall was enjoyable. We were so hungry that 'almost' anything would have been satisfactory. Next time I'll have to try the mussels, sounds like they're a crowd pleaser. El Dorado Kitchen (henceforth known as EDK) was the fiance's pick for our Sonoma dining experience. It's located in El Dorado hotel at the northeast corner of downtown Sonoma Square, a fantastic location next to The Girl & The Fig. Parking on a weekday evening was easy enough in the square; downtown is a little harder. The restaurant's entry was sparse, the dining room and exterior incredibly well-decorated. Hostess service was friendly, and waiter service was impeccable. For an outdoor evening dining experience in Sonoma, I liked EDK over The Girl & The Fig. The menu: Half-Bottle of Claiborne & Church Dry Riesling ($31): Can't remember the exact price, but it wasn't exorbitant. Given the location, there's a healthy mix of solid priced and costly wine options. Great menu. Great choice, as it was a fantastic refreshment for a balmy evening. Salmon Tartare ($11): We couldn't decide on an appetizer, and our intelligent waiter recommended this as refresher #2 to fit the weather. Great choice, sir! The sashimi-esque plate was reminiscent of Uchi in Austin, with a palette-cleansing soy vinaigrette and apples, a sweet-and-sour complement to the salty fish. Truffled Risotto ($23): A bit on the pricey side for risotto (as Wine Country is apt to be), but the fried egg was a heavenly touch. The yolk was exceptionally runny, and crackled over the risotto to add an additional, flavorful bind. The peas and corn added little besides color. The egg effect reminded me of a tapa dish I had in Barcelona, where they cracked a raw egg over sliced thin fried potatoes. It tasted much, much better than it sounds. Alaskan Halibut ($28): I never, ever like ordering halibut from a restaurant, so I have no idea why I was suckered to do so. For some reason, the side dishes that accompany halibuts always appeal to me, more so than your traditional "mixed vegetables" or "mashed potatoes" with a salmon dish. Anyways, this halibut came with something called a "cassoulet," which fared much better on my taste buds than the halibut. Not that the halibut was bad. It was cooked very well, and wasn't overly dry like halibut is apt to do. Still, the taste was left wanting. The only real disappointment of the night. Brown Sugar Plum Cake ($9): Our dessert selection, because how often do you find something called brown sugar plum cake on a dessert menu? It came with some citrus and orange creamsicle ice cream, two delightfully tangy complements. The cake itself was quite spicy, maybe overly so, and really required the acidity to bring it down to earth. The plums, ingrained in the cake, were delicious. Fantastic meal, with just one hiccup. The price isn't wallet-friendly, but the environment makes up for it. EDK is a strong recommend for your fine-dining option, if you're sticking with Sonoma over Napa. read more

We decided to eat here after an unsuccessful attempt to dine at The Girl & the Fig -- we walked in, told the hostess we didn't have reservations and she laughed us out of the restaurant. So we walked across the street to dine here. It wasn't crowded at all during lunch and we were seated right away. The interior has a comfortable, rustic feel with a partially open kitchen. They even have a kid's menu. We started with tuna tartare ($12) -- plenty of fresh chunks of fish were complimented by bits of pears and accompanied by wonton chips. My wife enjoyed her risotto ($17) and my Maine lobster sandwich ($22) was equally as good. Served on a ciabatta roll with bacon, heirloom tomatoes, and arugula, the lobster was plentiful, sweet and meaty -- although slightly overdressed. My kid, as usual, opted for the chicken tenders and seemed to like them (I didn't try them, but the fries were pretty decent). For $100, it was rather pricey but that's to be expected for the area. Great service. Great food. I had the paella, hubby got the pork ribs. Both were cooked right - seafood in the paella were not rubbery or chewy and cooked just right. We shared the chocolate lava cake. Hubby's food came later then the rest of the party and they offered him a second serving of soup while he waited. Overall we had a great experience here. We arrived at our reservation time but we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated which we didn't mind at all. It was very busy and we heard several people walking up wanting a table for lunch but they were completely booked. We were seated out on the patio and there were just a few tables when we first arrived but got packed by the time we were eating. We ordered the truffle fries and beef carpaccio and they were both very good. My son loved the fries! We ordered the fried chicken, cod and veggie risotto. Everything was so good, we didn't have any left over to take home. The cod was ok but I loved the mashed potatoes that came with it and the corn bread and coleslaw with the fried chicken were also very good. We had a great lunch here and although a little pricey, it was worth it. We look forward to dining here again in the future. read more

Hubby and I hit EDK for dinner on a Saturday night. We were seated promptly out on the patio as our reservation requested but the inside looked very inviting as well. Beautiful and modernly decorated. Definitely a trendy crowd. Good but not great service. It was a busy Saturday night and it seemed like there was a wedding reception going on in the private dining room. Prices weren't too steep for wine country. We ate oysters and a charcuterie plate for our appetizers. Very good. For dinner I ate mussels and fries (if it's on the menu, I'm likely to order it). Lunch for 2. - Ambiance (4/5) Very rustic interior. We sat at the bar. Very nice area and especially nice not to have a blaring TV monitor ruining the environment. - Service (5/5) Quick and courteous. Our bartender also answered a bevy of questions on which wineries to hit in the area. - Fried Green Tomatoes (3/5) Crunchy! These were very fresh. I did, however, find the breading a tad excessive. - Mushroom Flatbread (3/5) El Dorado used some great mushrooms for this flatbread, and the arugula was a great choice. I found the truffle oil a little heavy handed, and unfortunately found the flatbread itself to be a little too doughy. - Burrata (4/5) I appreciate the slightly different preparation since most tend to serve burrata in some sort of caprese style salad. The tomato confit was certainly a welcome twist, and it paired well with the burrata. The balsamic was a smart choice as well. They did, however, just plop the entire piece of burrata in the bowl. I suppose this is ok, but it did feel a little haphazard. - Value (4/5) I apologize-- forgot to write the prices down and the menu online doesn't have prices. Fortunately, I do remember thinking the prices were very reasonable. - Final Word We had quite an enjoyable time. While the food wasn't awe inspiring, it was a very nice place to spend an hour, drink some wine, fill up the tummy and get prepared for the long wine-tasting day ahead. read more

Lovely restaurant on the main square with professional service and solid food. The cabbage salad was one of our favorite dishes and the burrata cheese was unique and very tasty. The salmon was solid, but rather boring. We enjoyed the tuna carpaccio which was delicate and had nice flavors. There aren't a lot of affordable reds on the wine list which was disappointing. It was exactly what I needed; the crunchiness of the bagel with the creaminess of the cream cheese and the Saltiness of the lox and capers. Umami in your mouth. We came here for lunch on a drizzly winter afternoon, and it was so nice to step out of the cold into this warm, spacious restaurant. I really like the ambiance of the restaurant, the decor is simple but elegant, and there is a lot of natural light and open space so it feels very relaxing. We started with the truffle fries - absolutely delicious! They are so light and flavorful. The parmesan cheese flecks drizzled over the top make it even better. We also had the duck pastrami appetizer, which was served sliced, with a little bit of pickled cabbage on the side. Very good too! I had the roasted turkey sandwich with potato-leek soup. The sandwich came with sliced apples and fennel inside, as well as a celery remoulade, and was very flavorful and unique. It reminded me of the Mt. Tam sandwich that they serve at the Cowgirl Creamery cantina in Pt. Reyes, which is also delicious. The soup was great too. Even though it was a heavier-sounding soup (creamy potato and leek), the flavor of the leek came through well and made the soup seem light and fresh. I also liked that they put a few capers on top of the soup, brightening it up and giving it a tiny amount of saltiness. I also tasted the pasta with squash and bacon. The pasta was light and fluffy and the sauce was upscale comfort food done really well. The food took a little longer than I expected to come out, but our server was very nice about it, and I didn't mind waiting since I wasn't looking forward to going back out into the cold again! For dessert we picked up a butterscotch cookie from the attached El Dorado Kitchenette - SO good! And I don't even normally like cookies. I would like to go back to try El Dorado Kitchen for dinner next time I'm in the area for sure. read more

Ambiance and service make El Dorado Kitchen a place to visit. The cocktail list is even more impressive than the wine selection and the mastery of small-bite sides added to the entrees is truly special. We ate here tonight once again. Having tried nearly all the offerings on the entree menu, tonight I opted for the New York Steak. I would say this is an unspectacular dish. I ordered it medium rare and received it medium well. The seasoning was bland and the price point on this undersized cut was a bit of an insult. However, I am not biased by one visit nor one misstep. The risotto is spectacular, the truffle fries compliment everything (best without the cheese topping) and the pork belly is notably perfect. Our server tonight was like all the others we have encountered here over the last five years of visits; professional, knowledgable, fun and HONEST. They steer you to the right items when you give them enough to go on. Circling back to the steak, I was warned that other items are better selections but I was looking for a different offering than I have trailed in previous visits, so this one is partially on me. Excellent dining choice in the heart of Sonoma square. Was here for a friends wedding rehearsal dinner. The restaurant itself is very beautiful. Each of the courses were made of fresh ingredients and beautifully presented. For starters we had herbed burrata, a Mediterranean spread and a choice of potato leek soup or salad. For the main course, my boyfriend had the pork chop and I had sole - portions were very generous. We all commented that the staff was very attentive -- especially with our wine refills! Came in for dinner with my girlfriend. We were celebrating her birthday. I had put in a special request when I made the reservation letting them know I would like to make it extra special for her, and indeed they did just that. Welcome us with some complimentary champagne, customized menus with happy birthday on them and a nice little candle lit dessert to end the day, and a happy birthday song. Thanks for making it special! Really fine dining with great ambience and great service. The food was also pretty good. We had the seafood paella and New York steak.l which I recommend. I want to share what a wonderful celebration we had last Saturday for my Dad's 70th and Aunt's 60th birthdays. Events/Catering managers Chantal and Lila made sure every detail of the party was addressed. Besides making the initial phone call and responding to a couple of emails, my job was effortless. Our family and friends (party of 40) raved about the delicious canapés, truffles fries (an absolute MUST), risotto, entrées (esp the duck), creme brûlée and of course wine choices. More importantly our servers, Ryan, Daniel and Gilbert (oh gosh, I hope I got them all correct) were considerate, attentive & on point with EVERY detail of service...please thank them again. Absolutely DELICIOUS food. Get the pork belly as a starter...it's incredible. One of the best meals I've ever had (I had beef brisket as my main dish). The cocktails are great too! We were staying in the El dorado hotel and decided to make a reservation for the restaurant downstairs. There was a huge line as we were checking into our room, so it seemed like a good bet. We're so glad we ate here! Cocktails were excellent, especially The Butterfly Effect. It's one of the prettier drinks I've seen at a restaurant. We weren't planning on getting fries but our server insisted we try at least a half order of their truffle fries. I've had a lot of truffle fries and these were probably the best! We also tried a burrata starter with a mild chipotle chili sauce and huckleberry compote, which was surprisingly refreshing. For entrees, we had the filet mignon and the pork chop. The filet mignon was perfectly medium rare but pretty standard flavor-wise. The pork chop was rubbed in an achiote paste and served with some polenta and cabbage; it sounds disjointed but actually tasted great. The entree portion sizes were generous. Overall, a great place to stop for dinner if you're in Sonoma. A little pricey but what isn't in that area. read more

EDK is my type of restaurant, minus the weird customers and kiddie staff. I love the mussels and fries (got to get the fries!). The lobster ravioli was average. But my favorite part of the entire meal were the ice cream sandwiches! I scream for ice cream! EDK is not good enough for me to venture into Town again. I like the vibe (and restaurants) of Healdsburg better. btw, EDK does do parties and receptions. The Fireplace Lounge is awesome. It has a nice fireplace and the room has splashes of modernism. Crab cake was the best i've ever had so far in life..very delicious... halibut..was quite small, but the richness of the butter made me full.. cheese plate..it wasn't as great..the cheese seems to be the same as any other place that offered a cheese platter.. espresso ice cream with cookie wasn't all that special even though it was housemade.. ravioli was small..not really a big dish.. it's a bit overpriced..didn't do the tasting menu because the whole table needed to do it and yea..only i wanted it so blah..o well..its ok.. sat outside..saw a bunch of old folks in the pool..disturbing..but overall it was nice inside..great weather..prob one of the nicer places to eat around the plaza.. read more

I really thought the lamb would be much better since it came highly recommended by the waiter but it was not very impressive. I've definitely had better lamb elsewhere. We were there for the rehearsal dinner and we occupied the room to the side for all of us. They served us "mocktails" which consisted of No-Jitos (self explanatory) and Sonoma Spritzer (Cucumber, lemongrass, rosemary, lime, sprite) which was very refreshing. I had the Pan Roasted Scallops (Cauliflower, grapes, curry cauliflower purée marcona almonds, blood orange reduction) which was delicious. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the cauliflower curry puree was divine. Food was solid and service was on point. I told one of the servers I was dehydrated during the day and needed as much water as possible, and not once was my glass empty. Seriously. I've never been to Sonoma and enjoyed being in the area. Well all I have to say is that I am so happy we chose another restaurant for dinner and tried this place for lunch only. It reminded me of "SoHo wanna-be". Sleek contemporary decor, wooden tables, open kitchen but the service was worse than TGI Fridays, the food mediocre at best. Not bad just average. The place is so loud inside that you cannot hear yourself think let along have a conversation with your party, you have to ask the bus boy to bring your drink that you can see sitting at the bar and the waiter only shows up to take your order (after 15 minutes sitting there unnoticed) then to pick up your money. Never came back to ask if we need more drinks and or how the food is. Definitely scratching this of my Sonoma restaurants list. read more

Lunch was pretty good and they were pretty accommodating when I told them the time we needed to leave to catch our tour bus. We had the oysters, fish tacos and mole hash. All were great tasting. We hosted an cocktail reception here on the Friday before our wedding in October, 2013. We reserved the Fireplace room and Fig tree courtyard for about 55 guests. The service was good and our guests were pleased with the overall event. The food was good and the hor d'oeuvres were flowing consistently. The venue is cute and was perfect for our size event. There was room was perfect for a cocktail event with room to sit and stand. As the host of the event, I was a little disappointed in the details that El Dorado missed. 1) We had agreed to do a full bar for the event, but they had only setup to host beer and wine. We discovered this about 5 minutes before the event so the bartender ended up having to run to the bar for cocktails. This left our bar unattended quite often and guests just poured their own beer/wine. 2) The oysters were supposed to be walked around but they sat on the table in the corner. The warm marinated olives were supposed to be on various tables in the room but they were in the table in the corner. These things are minor but just a bit annoying as these were things that were specifically called out by the El Dorado event planner but not executed as discussed. The event planning staff was responsive in the beginning but as our event came closer and we were trying to finalize the details, they weren't as responsive. There had been some turnover with the events planning team between the time we reserved and finally hosted the event, which is probably why our experience could have been better. We also had a block of rooms here and the hotel manager, Kenny, was awesome. He is very friendly, helpful, and responsive. read more

We had lunch here on Saturday. The maitre'd was very accommodating. We asked if we could change tables and sit near the window. He obliged immediately. They also took our wine as soon as we arrived (and before we were seated) and chilled it so it was ready when we started our meal. I had the salmon. By default they cook it medium rare. I had it medium and my son took the default. We were both happy with the results. My wife had the fish tacos and was very happy with them, declaring hers the best dish of us four. Lastly, our son's fiance had the ahi tuna salad and was very happy with it. Our waiter was very good. Attentive but not oppressive. The only downside was the corkage fee: $25. That's becoming pretty standard in Napa but I hadn't expected it in Sonoma too. Oh well. read more
