El Gringo is located in a small strip mall off N Sepulveda Blvd. We came on a Sunday evening, and the place was quite busy. The servers were clearly struggling to keep up--clearing tables, setting up, and keeping the space tidy--but they were friendly and tried their best. The ambiance was clean but felt slightly sterile, lacking the warmth or character typically associated with Mexican culture. This brings me to the main issue: the food was very bland and unremarkable. The name "El Gringo" seems to capture the essence of their approach to Mexican cuisine, which seems to involve stripping away much of the flavor. We tried the Xcholti soup, which is advertised as their most popular item. It was a clear broth with chicken, tomatoes, and onions, but even after adding salsa, it remained disappointingly flavorless. We also ordered the Funky Beets salad with carne asada, and unfortunately, the carne asada was dry and overcooked. Again, there was nothing particularly noteworthy about the dish. Given the many fantastic Mexican food options available in Southern California, I have to say that I don't see a compelling reason to return to El Gringo. read more

Mexican food is probably the toughest category in LA of course but El Gringo excels and at great value. My breakfast bowl was delicious with alot of eggs(3)potatoes, cheese and alot of carne asada. Their fresh guac is also superb and was fun to dip. Service by Tommy was as good as it gets-give this man a raise. I didn't buy a drink but also noticed they have a nice beer selection which I'll try on my next visit. Highly recommended. read more

We wanted something casual and low key. This was our first time visiting this restaurant recommended by a friend that lives locally. Monday evening, about 3 tables were seated during our stay. Quite a few to go orders were picked up while we dined. Staff were really nice and friendly. Menu was larger than what I expected. We ordered the two Chicken Enchiladas plate with Green Sauce, Rice & Black Beans and the Grilled Shrimp Bowl with Refried Beans. Both dishes were abundant and delicious! This restaurant is near Manhattan beach. The name of the restaurant really describes the food. I love the fact that a lot of the options in the menu are health conscious and adapts to different dietary needs. Reminds me of the TexMex restaurant "Gringos" in Texas. The service was efficient and the server was very kind to my family. I asked her what would she recommend for the meat in the Baja California tacos and she said carnitas are a favorite here. I tried the carnitas with my tacos and they were very good. I like ambience of the restaurant. It feels like I'm eating over at someone's house. If you want to eat healthy and have some good food, you should come here. They also have ground bison for my protein junky people like my boyfriend who was dying to try it. I had the rudest experience of my life today at this location. I have dined at the MB restaurant many times as a local. After I received my order today I was told by the register girl to never order there again if I wanted something special done- go to RB instead because they don't "want" my business. I requested my tortillas to be put on the side (which has never been a problem before)- the reason for this is because the tortilla shells are destroyed by the time you get to your location to eat them. Since it never was an issue I didn't think it would a problem. Before the cashier handed me my bag she BERATED me about my order and mentioned over and over if I wanted something special done that the kitchen staff was not "about that" so take it elsewhere. Being a business owner myself as well as experience of many, many years of customer service her attitude was "not it". I understand it doesn't take much to work a register and she probably hates that she has to be at her job during the summer but the aggression wasn't warranted. I feel so disrespected and upset by her attitude towards me that I never will return. Last thing, she was busy talking to her boyfriend who was standing halfway in the checkout area. I arrive right before the lunch rush and was greeted by a very friendly young waitress who serve me some of the best soup I've ever had Xchotoli (sp) is basically chicken soup with rice tomato and avocado. Ordered a wet carne asada burrito and a carne asada quesadilla. The steak was seasoned well and tender. Little to no fat/gristle. However the cost of the meal was shocking. With tax it came to $32.00. No drinks, no extras; we ordered to go. The chips they threw in were appreciated, but were not very good. Mostly greasy. I would have given 5 stars had the cost of the meal been reasonable. For the cost of the burrito, we could have made both items ourselves. read more

I had friends in town and they wanted fish tacos and I figured since El Gringo was the restaurant that taught me Taco Tuesday is a thing, that they'd be in good hands. My friends ordered Beef Enchiladas, one battered and one grilled fish taco. We asked for the magical white sauce which was amazing. They were both really surprised with their portion size (which was huge) when you add the rice and beans! Being from the east coast, it was exactly what they hoped for. I loved my beet salad (with shrimp added) and honestly wish it had more beets. The best parts were the blackened shrimp, beets and the pine nuts. The rest was still delicious and filling - I would have been fine with a 1/2 salad and will order that next time. My grilled fish taco was not as juicy and flaky as I hoped.. It was a little dry and flat I thought, though still tasty. While I won't get the fish tacos again, their menu offers a ton of other tasty options! I hadn't been to El Gringo since prior to the pandemic. So when I left work on Friday and El Gringo popped into my mind for dinner, I immediately headed in their direction. I recalled their delicious Mexican Pizza. I arrived and a smiling blonde server named Whitney welcomed me in and got me seated. There was only one table filled in the small dining area. This time I ordered Classic Tacos with onions and cilantro added. I sat there eating chips and their salsa (which was fresh and had a spicy kick). I ordered steamed spinach and black beans on the side. My meal was brought out a few minutes later. The taco shells were crunchy, all veggies brightly colored and freshly chopped. The tacos were delicious as well. Sorry I didn't take pics of my beautiful plate, because I dug in too quickly. My server checked on me several times to see if I needed anything. But I didn't because I was fully satisfied with my meal and her attentive service. By the time I left, the dining area was full of new hungry patrons, including a family with two little girls who were excitedly ordering their tacos. I went to collect my order last night and was pleasantly greeted - we spoke about supporting small / local businesses during this very difficult time. I left a nice tip because I felt the staff deserved it. I got home only to find that half my order was wrong. I called and the young lady i spoke to said that she's read my order back to me and confirmed that it was correct and that the issue was on my end - wow! I had called over 10 times too, to place my order as the line was a busy. No apology, no nothing - this is the second time it's happened - not what you'd expect from a restaurant during a pandemic.
