Holy. Crap. I made a stop on my global adventure in Sydney to visit a friend from SF.. a fellow Lebanese; so I knew when her family insisted on taking me to El Jannah.. it was going to be forking good. We ordered pretty much everything on the menu. Chicken, fries, extra garlic sauce (toum.. twice), tabouleh, fattouch, a kafts sando, and more chicken. The char-grilled chicken was cooked to perfection. Juicy, flavorful and smokey, just how we like it. The tabbouleh needed a bit of extra lemon squeezes but really hit the spot. Fries - superb. Extra thick and crunchy which is how I like mine thankfully.. other Lebos like them thin and lanky. The kafta needed some more moisture, but was good. Get a side of the pickles to pair sour with salty along the way. I'm salivating just writing this. I wish SO badly that they would open up a store in San Francisco. Owners- if you're reading this, and interested in making you're way to the US, I will personally back you :p Yallah Service was fantastic. It was freezing in their 2nd dining area and they promptly turned it the AC down after we asked. Everything was clean, very friendly staff. A must for a quick meal in Sydney. read more

I've been coming to El Jannah for years now, whenever I'm in Sydney, and it never lets down. Amazing charcoal chicken. I'd recommend going with friends if you can and getting a meal deal with pita wraps and pickles. Whatever you do, get an extra garlic sauce though, because one is never enough! read more

When anyone mentioned GC's (Granville Chicken) you started getting the jitters haha, your always hungry for El Jannah even if you've already had a big feed there's alway's room for great tasting Chicken. When you lay your eyes on your plate when it's served warm and fresh in front of you, you'll know what I'm on about :), also can't go past their pickled veggies & garlic sauce & heaping of lebo bread :D!! Was a spare parts delivery driver in my early 20's & i ran into this takeaway place with a massive line out the door after doing a delivery to a mechanic round the corner. Was in the line for about 20 mins before getting served, order the whole chicken with bread garlic sauce & pickles. The taste was incredible & been hooked ever since :D Can't remember my last visit here until couple weeks ago when i was on Parramatta road heading to featherdale animal park in blacktown with my cousin from Sweden & friends when someone said they were Hungry.. The hype is true, El Jannah is the king of chicken in Western Sydney and even NSW. Chicken will never be the same again. CHICKEN Most of the chicken was soft, tender and the slightly charred bits gave it that smoky and salty depth of flavour. Thighs were the best though, followed by drumsticks. Some of the breast was a little too dry which just meant dipping it in more sauce. It might have dried out on the way back home and I don't mind trying eating in at Granville the next time. GARLIC SAUCE This sauce deserves a heading or what about even a book. Amazing sauce that amplifies the chicken and cures dryness. I had that sauce for breakfast the morning after, lunch and dinner. Couldn't get enough until it was over, must be my French tongue wanting that garlic. It goes well with everything just carry a mint on you:p SHAWARMA Delicious meat with hummus and pickles on Lebanese bread. Definitely worth having again and it did hit the spot. Conclusion Reasonably healthy fast food meal, garlic good, chicken good! I did not feel that drowsiness from eating KFC for example. I would say it's a better alternative to franchise fast food like Nandos, Red Rooster and KFC and only if you like garlic. Best charcoal chicken of Sydney is what this place is known for. Well is it? Probably. Shoot, but I prefer the wraps. However one of my cousins didn't love her wrap: said the sauce was too creamy and that killed it for her. But, I thought it was bomb. The chips (or as we Americans like to call them: fries) was divine.. It was crispy and remained so, but not overdone, and a bit soft inside. Just right. I did tryputting chicken stock on top of my chips back home and it didn't taste the same.. Can't get their fries anywhere else. I'm so craving their chips/fries and their wraps right now.. Darn. But, back to what people come here for: The Charcoal chicken itself wasn't dry whatsoever, it was really good.. It was the right amount of charcoal taste for someone who loves or hates burnt food. My food didn't taste like a cancer-mine where I wasn't just tasting burnt ends. It was flavorful and not overly done. Can't describe. But basically my cousin loves BURNT food and I despise burnt food, but I would grab thirds of this if I wasn't full. TIP: We also bought some leb bread across the street at the little pizza/bakery/deli place and it was great with the chicken. Walked past this place 2 times before deciding to stop by on the 3rd time. Came here around 2pm on a Friday afternoon. There were people queuing and there were some that was eating their meals (both inside and outside). Been reading the previous reviews about the chicken and the garlic sauce and hence decided to go for 1/2 chicken and a glass of apple juice instead of sodas. After ordering, I found myself a seat indoor near to the glass windows towards the entrance. After making myself comfortable, my order arrived. Service was definitely fast as I received my order within 5 minutes even though there are a few customers in front of me. Dining in was cheaper than take aways. Conclusion, like many had mentioned, the chicken was not only tender but it was flavorful. Similar to the El Pollo Loco or Zankou Chicken I had when I was in California. The portion was bigger than expected for a reasonable size. The garlic sauce, on the other hand, was very addictive. If purchased on its own, it will be $3 (price may subject to change) so it is definitely a better value if you order it as part of the meal. And surprisingly, even though it wasn't stated on the menu, I was given the bread as well. Gulping apple juice after bites of chicken was pretty refreshing. Definitely a good place to stop by. Tried the shawarma roll few days later. The meat was tender and juicy and the bread rolled around it was crispy. Took quite awhile to be served but was worth the wait. read more

The first 40+ day of the year. What to do? BBQ by the pool? Hide in a shopping centre? Drive halfway across Sydney in the blistering heat for Lebanese charcoal chicken? Yep. That's the one. I'm exaggerating. Epping is far further west than most would like to admit. In this sort of weather you need to plan ahead so I did my research and ordered online. Reasoning that I wouldn't be likely to drive to Granville for lunch very often I had no qualms in ordering everything. When I arrived and saw the crowd I knew I had done the right thing. 15 minutes later when I was still waiting on my chicken I wondered if it was worth it. Turns out they forgot me so maybe there is some kind of system or process flaw that would be worth investigating and applying the 6-sigma methodology to remediate if it wasn't for the fact that this is a chicken shop so why worry. The chicken is nice and charcoaly if a little dry, the tabouli was amazing, same for the fattoush, pickles a bit too salty for me, chips pretty good, hommous very nice and lahme skewers well cooked. The only disappointment for me was the garlic sauce. Everyone goes on about the garlic sauce. Maybe my expectations were overinflated or maybe someone pulled the old unscrewing the top of the salt dispenser trick on the chef. The top fell off, all of the salt fell into the garlic sauce, they all had a good laugh and then sold it anyway. Basically what I'm saying is the garlic sauce is very salty. Granville overall is a somewhat overlooked foodie paradise so I'll definitely make the trip again to try out other shops but I probably wouldn't make the trip just for El Jannah again. Maybe it was talked up too much but I was left a little disappointed. The food wasn't bad per se, but it wasn't anywhere near great. The amount of charcoaling was absolutely perfect, but the chicken (breast) itself was dry and a little boring in taste. I much prefer the chicken from Chargril Charlie's (unfortunately North Shore only), and much prefer the garlic sauce from Charcobel nearby in Guildford. Keep in mind I've read that this is how garlic sauce should taste, and the places I prefer apparently do it wrong. The number of people queueing to order had myself and my partner a little nervous about wait times, but we were absolutely shocked by how fast the food arrived. It felt like less than a minute after we took a seat, despite being very busy indeed. Expect customisations to your order to be completely ignored. I asked for no pickles, got pickles. Partner asked for a customisation, got standard menu offering too. Have now revisited and was just as disappointed. Given the option I think I'll stick to Hawa down the road. read more

I don't generally go to El Jannah as I usually go to Hawa Chicken which is less busier and further down the road. A group outing was organised here so luckily we were able to get two tables outside. I ordered my sit in chicken and chips and it took super long! Have no idea why!! It costs a bit extra as well compared to take away and you had to pay extra for garlic sauce! Honestly i should have ordered take away and had it at the table. Wasn't impressed. Service is like a fast food joint and I'm a bit anti food chains which El Jannah has been become now with stores everywhere now. Huge place this. Huge. As in seating inside and outside. Don't expect royal seating or anything, however what they do have is adequate for your dinner. They also offer meal deals and traditional chicken (full, quarter, etc) and possibly some of the best chicken this side of Parramatta. If you're here for dinner best be aware that there is always a line of people milling for orders and they give you a number so you can stand off to one side and pick up when they yell out your order number. The food is pretty nommy so mostly the wait is always worth it in the end. Also they don't take cards. So if you don't have cash I do suggest you get some before you go here otherwise you can use their non-descript ATM in the corner of the shop. But be warned that it's not affiliated with any bank so therefore you get slogged the withdrawal fee. read more

How's this for absolute torture - reviewing charcoal chicken during my meat-free week. Probably a good thing given I would more than likely jump in my car, drive the 20 odd kms for a quarter chicken, toum and fattoush and then regret the fact I just devoured a tub of garlic sauce ... ohhh but what a garlic sauce indeed !!! I have never eaten in, in fact, I have only ever had the one meal at El Jannah and it was take-out. I was floored by how busy this place was - the line for ordering was almost out the door, however it moves fairly quick (seems like all those before me were regulars so knew exactly what to get). I'm a HUGE fan of chicken and I must say, they do a pretty good chicken - just the right amount of seasoning and a great ratio of "cooked/burnt beyond recognition" bits. I have no words to describe the garlic sauce - don't even question it, just get it!! The negatives? I know I know, some folk might think I'm getting a little precious when it comes to this, but my god, that tabouleh was WAY TOO SALTY!!! My mouth seized up from the amount in there - no joke, I was retaining water for days after!!! So yeah, I recommend passing on that. The fattoush is not too bad though - again, a little heavy with the salt, but nowhere near as bad as the tab. The hummus, OH MY, just some tasty stuff right there!! Parking is a real ***** in this area, so be prepared to either wait for that rockstar spot, circle the block about 20 times OR walk it from Granville pools. Food here is absolutely amazing. Their garlic sauce out of this world. But you do need mint afterwards. Also don't forget to bring some wet wipes. You do get rather messy. On Sunday, my sister and I went for lunch at El Jannah which began in 1998 as a small take-away shop in Granville. Much has changed since my first visit in the early 2000s and the next 5-or-so years where I regularly visited for lunch with colleagues and clients while working as a caseworker in the nearby suburb of Chester Hill. El Jannah was in a small shop (that was later guttered by fire) situated on the corner of Railway Parade & South Street. It was much cheaper and easier to eat-in too. While it was popular at lunch time, there was no line nor crowd like there is now. Then, as now, you could smell the aroma of charcoal chicken in the air from much further down the street. Our visit on Sunday was my sister's first. Immediately scanning the menu board rendered her some shock as she duly noted to me the wide difference in the price to eat-in versus take-away. Yes, it's quite a notable difference! I have always enjoyed eating-in at El Jannah. I ordered us each a half-chicken plate with pickles, garlic sauce & Lebanese bread and with order number in hand pounced on a just-emptied table. A waiter brought two small baskets of pita bread to our table, and only minutes later, two plates with the chicken, pickles & a healthy serving of toum arrived. I quickly set about separating bits of chicken from the bone to eat with the pickles and garlic sauce wrapped in the pita. That's how I like to have it, but there are many ways to eat the meal. As there was so much to eat there was very little conversation over the next twenty minutes, except towards the end of the meal where we both bemoaned being so full and struggling to finish off our plate. True to El Jannah form, the chicken was well cooked on the outside and succulent inside; the salty pickled radish (not favoured by some, including my sister) and the gherkin cucumbers remain tasty adjuncts; and devouring the copious serving of garlic sauce remains my favourite part of the meal. I will never get tired of El Jannah's chicken. This is one of the best chicken places in Sydney, it is always packed whenever we go here. Service and turnaround is quick so you will never have to wait for a table if eating in. I must say I have never tried anything other than chicken from the menu because it is just so damn good that I can't not order the chicken when we're there! The garlic sauce will leave you with garlic breath for at least a day but it is so worth it. read more

A local institution that excels in bunging out cheap chicken and chips. Located conveniently next to the train station, many will say that it is the best chicken you'll find for miles. I personally wouldn't go that far but it is damn good!! They do a variety of other things like wraps, burgers etc. But for me, it's the chicken and chips that's the winner every time. Its cheap and the food is consistently good, they some how have mastered what most places seem to set so wrong. Quater chicken eat in is the way to go because it is a nice balance of what El Jannah has to offer tasty charcoal chicken with amazing pickled gherkins and turnip (sounds yuk but is amazingly tangy) If you go there late and there is no seat then get take way and you can eat it later on its not bad cold and it can be kept overnight and still tasted amazing. Adjectives fail to describe the wonder of this place! The charcoal cooked chicken is a revelation. The accompanying garlic sauce more so. The chicken is tender with crispy skin and a deep smoky flavour. The garlic sauce (toum) is zesty yet subtle and extremely addictive. There's an assortment of Lebanese side dishes like tabouli, falafel or babaganoush. They are well-made and a solid accompaniment to the chicken. The big tip about this place is to takeaway. It works out way cheaper than if you ate in. In fact, having been here I'm foresaking Woolie's / Coles roast chicken from now on and just making a bee-line to this place whenever I want an easy chicken meal. P.S. I swear the strip of Railway Parade along where El Jannah is just smells heavenly of the cooked fowl. read more

Ordered a simple 1/2 sized chicken and sides. The sides came with shallots, pickles (salty, but yum), lebanese bread and a tub of garlic sauce. Don't forget about the chips; they are just amazing as the chicken! And the garlic sauce.... All I could think about was coming back with extra money for it! I have visited here on a couple of occasions and it is constantly busy. There is both inside and outside seating in both locations Granville and Blacktown. After hearing about how amaze the charcoal chicken and garlic sauce was, I grudgingly agreed to make the trip all the way to Granville. Fondly known as "EJ", the smell of EJ's charcoal chicken floats across a 200m radius and you will start to feel your belly rumble as you walk by open dumpsters, youths in hoodies, and graffiti. The layout is basic and sparse, with standard tables and chairs indoors and outdoors. EJ is mainly takeout place because we saw a lot of people standing around waiting for their takeaway orders amidst the few seated guests. Our order: Chicken Skewers (minimum 3), Chicken roll, 1/4 chicken (came with 2 kinds of pickles and lashings of garlic sauce), 2 regular sized fries, and 3 diet cokes. When we placed our order (no table service here!) I asked the lady how big the fries were. She said a regular size could be shared between 2 people. WRONG. The regular was f**king HUGE. I saw other tables at EJ sharing regular sized fries among at least 4 people. The fries were nothing special, and at one point I saw a man rolling a trolley from McCain's into their kitchen. The real deal is that garlic sauce...which is beautiful!! I rolled my fries, chicken, pickles, and even my diet coke in it at one point. After my meal, I scooped it with a spoon and licked it off just by itself. SO GOOD. My main was the chicken skewers, and they were just incredible. I thought the chicken would be served on a skewer, but it's actually just served in pieces on a plate on a bed of onions and spices. Very considerate of them, I just dodged an evening full of innuendos. Chicken = Juicy, well seasoned, but a bit salty. The salt thing might be a personal taste though...a couple of years ago I undertook a lifestyle change where I vowed to eat less salt, so I could be feeling it a bit more than the average salt eating person (note: irrespective of this lifestyle change, my salt intake for the purposes of tequila shots has remained constant). That night, I took home a little bit of El Jannah with me. My illicit liaison with EJ's garlic sauce had its repercussions. The morning after, I awoke with its scent on my expensive bamboo sheets.
