We stayed for 3 nights at the Hotel Julamis and it was an enjoyable time. Alex Rudin is the owner-operator of the hotel and makes all guests feel welcome. He will cheerfully greet you when you check in (just let him know your time in advance). As an added benefit, there is a bottle of tequila by reception while he hosts a tequila happy hour on the rooftop every night at 6p.
The hotel decor is in the traditional Mexican style with a pleasant courtyard where breakfast is served. Alex puts together a gourmet breakfast every morning. The rooms are pleasantly decorated although the furnishing is it a bit sparse. The art on the walls is really impressive, however. There were a couple pieces I wouldn't mind having. And one recommendation since Merida is so hot and humid is to make sure you get one of the rooms with air conditionng.
The location of Hotel Julamis is great - it's in a quiet neighborhood on the corner of Calle 53 and Calle 54 (don't ask). It's an easy 8-10 minute walk to the Centro Historico. Alex can provide detailed recommendations on restaurants, bars, and other entertainment. The only things I would knock down the Hotel Julamis on is that Alex is tough to find outside of breakfast, so you will have to track him down to pay him. And the beds are pretty hard, so if you like soft beds it may be difficult for you to sleep. Otherwise, I give the Hotel Julamis a full 4 out of 5 stars. If you like simple boutique hotels with tequila practically on tap, this is the place for you. read more
