a burrito on a plate with a knife and fork

El Mags is a go to for Mexican food! They have good lunch specials and just started a new card rewards for lunch. They have great margs and I recommend the prickly pear! They also give you chips and salsa when you sit down at the table that are just included with the meal. I've tried a lot of different things here and everything has been tasty and flavorful! My personal favorites are the chicken and shrimp fajitas (if I'm splitting with someone) and just chicken rice and cheese and using chips to scoop it! The queso is sooo good as well and they wait isn't too bad once you get everything ordered. *side note- the burrito California is alarmingly huge (and great), so either share it or you most likely will have lots to bring home. I seriously think it's enough for 3 people, especially after chips!*

Loved the consommé - it had an undertone of lingua - rich and full flavored. The tacos were good - would have liked a bit more spice and acid. Our waiter was wow- one of the best I've had in a long while. Kitchen was a bit off on their timing but our waiter was right on top of it!

Birria Tacos, Mexican Taquitos, chips & salsa

My son was home for a visit recently and we wanted to eat somewhere we've never been. I'm so glad we picked El Maguey. We were greeted by friendly staff upon entering and quickly seated in a comfy booth. We were barely seated before we had a basket of warm tortilla chips and bowl of salsa brought to our table. My son ordered the Birria Tacos and I had the Mexican Taquitos to which I added a side of rice. Everything was delicious. Our server was friendly, attentive, and efficient. They also had a clean restroom which I think speak volumes for any business. I can't wait to go back-- highly recommend!

Still trying out new restaurants in our new home town. We heard good things about El Maguey. We ordered beef Birria Quesadillas and a beef Chimichanga. The chimi could have been crispier but was otherwise good. The Birria Quesadillas were really good and something we had never had before. Kind of like a Mexican version of a French dip sandwich. They are crispy tacos with a dipping sauce. Amazing! The dipping sauce resembled an au jus. It was incredibly rich. Our waiter couldn't get us the recipe but did get the kitchen to share that the richness comes partly from using the drippings from the steaks prepared the night before for their carne asada. Really really good. Our waiter was wonderful. He was very attentive. So why the four stars instead of five? The kitchen sent out the chimi and sides almost ten minutes before the Birrias. We had to eat in shifts. Hopefully an anomaly because we want to go back. The decor was very nice.

Pros: The staff was friendly & the food was better than most Mexican restaurants in the area Cons: My booth seat was falling apart, the music was alittle loud, & the table top had advertisements embedded.. the advertisements could be a Pro if you are one to read while you eat, it just came off as cheap to me.

Best Mexican food in Edwardsville. Hands down. We have tried most the Mexican places in the area and this one has the best food BY FAR.

Highly recommend El Jalisco special. The salsa is pretty bland. Sometimes the service is less than ideal.

It's clear the restaurant is thriving under the new management that took over in November. They are doing a fantastic job! One of the standout items was the in-house homemade chorizo, which is easily the best I've ever had. The street tacos were absolutely to die for. The cabeza especially took me by surprise in the best way. The meat was rich, tender, and incredibly flavorful. They even brought me an extra spicy salsa upon request, which was delicious and clearly made with care. And of course, the margaritas went down smooth and easy. The perfect pairing with such great food. Between the lively atmosphere, thoughtful service, and standout dishes, Viva La Fiesta is definitely a place I will be coming back to.

On a Friday evening there was only one other table there, which should have been our first clue. The food took so long to come out I thought they might be growing the ingredients out back. The chips tasted like they came straight from a family-size bag at the grocery store, and the chimichanga had all the excitement of a tax form. The lettuce tasted like it was reminiscing about fresher days. My husband ordered a soda and was handed a bottle, apparently unlimited refills are now considered a luxury item. We went for my husband's birthday dinner and left wishing we'd celebrated at a gas station taqueria instead. I understand rising costs due to the economy, but you can tell this place is nowhere what it use to be, from a year ago. Quality has gone downhill. The only reason this review gets two stars is because the server was friendly. Won't be back, too many other options to choose from in the area. Hasta la vista baby.
