Just moved back here from California, where if you're from the states and you've traveled there, you know it's unarguably the best Mexican food in the country, besides a place here and there in Arizona and Utah. Ice Cream El Michoacano is absolutely by far the best Mexican I've tried in Iowa, without a doubt. The food here is very good. I had Carne Asada and fries, hubby had 3 tacos. We split an order of hot wings, they were crispy and perfect. They also had Coke in a bottle, my favorite cheat day treat. We also got a pork burrito to take home. We were too full to try the ice cream, but it looked delicious. We will be back. read more

This is now officially my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. it's so unfortunate the signage on the outside makes it look like ice cream shop when it's really a great restaurant. I waited on my review to visit this place a few times to see if it was too good to be true and the consistency was right on. They knock it out of the park every time. We really like the hibiscus and strawberry drinks that they have on hand all the time. they have great prices for the amount of food that you get. I'm glad we stumbled upon this random ice cream shop that ended up being a great restaurant. read more

Great little taco place just minutes from the house. Not sure why it took SO long to pay a visit; maybe it's the name that threw me off. The place was bustling with families and couples; in and out people swung by to grab dinner or ice cream. I took my mini me Sunday night since I was craving street tacos and didn't want to drive to our usual spot. Mini me ordered steak tacos and I had my pastor. The meat to tortilla ratio was perfect and I liked it was also served with a ramekin of avocado salsa. The pastor had a nice kick to it and I heated each mouthful with a bite of grilled jalapeño. They also offer fresh juices and by the looks of the empty container, horchata must be the most popular. I decided to try Jamaica, which is hibiscus flavored tea(that's what the sign stated). It reminded me of a fruit punch but not as sweet. I'll have to go check out the other flavors soon. As the sign says, they also sell ice cream! They had a large variety of flavors and fruit popsicles too! Unfortunately, I was full but mini me chose a chocolate covered banana for dessert. Can't go wrong with that. Service was friendly and quick. Place could've used a bit of tidying up, however, I'm sure they were just done with the dinner rush. This is my favorite spot for quick and delicious Mexican food here in Des Moines. I get the Asada tacos which are simple yet delicious. The meat to tortilla ratio is absolutely perfect, and goes it goes very well with their house salsas. I prefer the salsa verde because it adds a little kick but the flavor is still delicious. I always pair my meal with a cup of their Horchata, which alone is a reason to visit here. I have tried their flautas and nachos as well which are good if you need more food than just a few tacos. I would like to try their torta next because it looks delicious but I can't get away from those dang tacos lol! One of the best parts of this Resteraunt is their staff. They are always so friendly when you come and really make you feel welcomed. They are also super fast when getting your food out to you. Funny I'm writing this review on a Tuesday.. Cause the first time I went to Ice Cream El Michoacano was on a Tuesday... come time find out.. it's not open on Tuesdays... I was very excited to try this little hidden gem, as all my vegan friends and fellow vegan yelpers were raving about this spot! Why you might asked! Well it's the only Mexican spot in town, that truly caters to the vegan! Yep they got vegan cheese, fake vegan meats, vegan sauces, and yep an entire vegan menu. This is the real deal for a vegan! Don't judge a book by the cover and the tiny parking lot. Once you get inside you are greeted with smiles and an abundance of food, for the Vegan like me! Hey I get it, they have regular Mexican fare too! The service was very nice and helpful. I ended up with the vegan burrito, and it was gone in a flash.. Mexican pops, gone too! Take chance and bite into the pepper they give you, just make sure you saved some of that Mexican soda, it's a hot one! So it this place! Hot to trot! read more

Have been hearing great things about this place and finally got the chance to try it out! Love walking up to a place and being greeted with a sign on the door offering a complete vegan menu! This place is great for all lovers of good food. It's small but welcoming, the person working the counter waited patiently as we browsed the vegan menu. I chose the vegan enchiladas. They come in a huge portion, covered in vegan cheese and avocados. I wasn't able to finish it all. Also got to try the vegan burrito which was also delicious. The sauces were excellent too. One was super spicy and the verde offered a nice flavor. They seemed to have a steady flow of customers, some who were first timers like myself and others who seemed like regulars. Really excited to come back and try more things on the menu! Its nice to have so many options, which is not typical in these type of restaurants (fajitas always) So glad this place is getting the hype it deserves and grateful they are catering to all lovers of mexican food! read more
