We are both Americans but I have had a LOT of authentic Mexican food, including in Mexico and home cooked Mexican food by Mexican friends. The food wasn't terrible, but it did not taste very Mexican to us. Upon seating, we were provided with a basket of very hard/firm and thick tortilla chips accompanied by 2 tiny ramekins of salsa (1 was a red tomato salsa and the other a smooth green avocado salsa). The red salsa tasted like salted tomato and little else (not much flavor) and the avocado salsa tasted, well, like salted avocado and lemon. I didn't taste or see any cilantro or onions anywhere. Chomping on the chips made my jaws tired and might hurt your teeth if you have sensitive teeth. We each ordered a different enchilada dish (see photos). Mine came with 2 enchiladas and was filled with generous helpings of bland shredded chicken that had the texture of a paste. The red sauce on top tasted like Italian tomato sauce rather than enchilada sauce. I was disappointed by the lack of flavor. They didn't even ask me if I wanted it spicy (it wasn't). The reason I am giving it 3 stars is because it was a cute place with thoughtful decor that makes an effort to give you a nice experience. There is indoor seating on the first and second floors as well as a nice outdoor seating area with umbrellas. The waitstaff was nice and attentive. I'd give it 2.5 stars so I rounded up. I just wish the food was better. (If the food was better I'd give it 4 stars!). Not sure whether I will return.

Of course, there are some adaptations but it's one of the closest things to authentic Mexican food in Santiago. The chef lived in Mexico for years and everything is really flavorful, filling (portions are large), and all under $5,000. They're one of the few places that have lengua and they always have at least 3 different types of aguas. Not too crazy about the pozole (not the right Chiles) and tortillas (not soft enough).

From the outside, Chilango has a badass Mexican vibe with a 'dia de los muertos' feel. There is a giant "calaveras" on the sign out front and once you walk in, the decor of photos, trinkets and art make you feel like your in the DF instead of Santiago. The owner lived and studied in Mexico and has brought the flavors and spice to Santiago (adding a bit of Chilean twist to make it palatable for Chilean tastebuds). When we got in it must have been around 12am so we were happy to see it was still open! I was deciding between the quesadilla and the burrito, but because the look and feel were super authentic, I decided to try my luck with the burrito. I am a vegetarian and normally veggie burritos always let me down (except for the Chipotle option). Sure enough, it was a let down and not very filling but, the spicy salsas and nachos did somewhat make up for it. However, my friend, who lived in Mexico for a year, got a burrito with chicken and gave it his seal of approval. This is a perfect place for a late night snack on your way to or from the bars in the area as they are open super late. I also heard they have some good lunch specials, but for me, I am not sure if the quality-price ratio is worth it when there are so many other tasty restaurants around with better veggie options. Tip: Eat in the restaurant (as opposed to getting your order to go) because they have a selection of different and interesting and spicy salsas that you can choose.

Their burritos have a really fresh taste to them and don't leave you feeling super weighed down, which can sometimes happen. They offer several different burritos, taco and always have freshly made guacamole. So the food great. The location is also great it's right on loreto by lots of the major bars and Santiago night scene, they also have street seating for the scorching summers. I always stop by here after a night at Onacio. So what sucks their SERVICE. it doesn't just suck it's atrocious. I don't think I've ever received worst service in my life. It's such a pity as the atmosphere is chill and the food is really a great bajon after a night out.
