Ate there for the first a few nights ago and was pleasantly surprised. I had pollo Oaxaca while my wife had chili relleno. Both of these traditional dishes were well-prepared, although my wife would have preferred a bit more heat in hers. Overall, the meal, including table side prepared guacamole was quite good. I should also add that the staff were very solicitous and the service very efficient. However, the restaurant suffers from one flaw: the bar service. My wife's margarita was fairly tasteless abc suspiciously weak. Could the drink have included water?? Don't know but I had the same problem with a martini. (I should add that the olives which accompanied the martini were the smallest olives in the world, about the size of raisins). One would suppose that at the very least a restaurant that serves Mexican would produce a first-rate margarita. I believe that the majority of diners that ordered a margarita wouldn't object to paying a bit more for a good drink. It is for the problematic bar service that I give El Patron 3.5 stars. read more

Stopped in from the road by chance and what a terrific experience! Attractive dining room with sound Covid procedures. The salsa with fresh chips told me it was going to be a good meal but I was not prepared for a truly mind blowing guacamole. Made fresh at the table in a large molcajete , it was honestly the best I've had whether in the Southwest or even Northern Mexico. Entrees were generously sized and tasty. If you wanted steak in a taco, you got real steak not what many other Mexican restaurants call steak. Refritos were black beans and delicious. Margaritas were if anything, too generous on the tequila. I'm sad I live a distance away from El Patron because I would be a regular. If you are driving on I-78 anywhere near exit 17, get off on 31 North and head here. You won't be disappointed. read more

Had high hopes for a new Mexican place in town. Service was fine, but was pretty disappointed overall. Margaritas were "meh", food was average, and prices seemed high considering the quality of the food. If you're in the mood for authentic Mexican, this isnt the place. Stopped on a quick whim and sooo happy we did!!! Place was packed and they were short staffed. That didn't stop the staff from making us feel right at home and getting our food to us in a timely manner. The complimentary chips and salsa were amazing and my house Margarita was delicious!! Our main courses were the steak quesadilla and chicken enchiladas served hot and tasted terrific!! We shared our plates back and forth and couldn't pick which was better! Our waiter was super attentive and helpful!! We had the churros for dessert which my husband described as a "warm hug" they were unbelievable!! Was told it would be 20 mins, it ended up being 40 mins, so had to sit there and wait. They forgot the fresh guacamole ($9.95) so I had to drive back for it after getting home. We were so looking forward to going to this restaurant. The food was good--not great, but definitely good--- but the iced tea tasted like soap and we left very disturbed by the poor service and attitude of one of the employees. We asked one of the servers not to reach over my 85 year old mother while she was still eating. At first she stopped and then came back 3 minutes later to do the same thing. When I asked the servers to wait until we were finished, we were given a dirty look like you would not believe and offered absolutely no apology for rudeness. Such a shame! This is our second time here . We aren't in the area often the first time we picked this spot for proximity. The second time we made sure this is where we were having lunch ! We've had Topher as our server both times and we LOVE him . The margarita pitchers are both delicious and well priced . I ordered the Camerones en salsa verde on both trips . The green sauce is amazing . And I would buy it to go if I could . My husband ordered carne asade on both trips . It's literally butter . Since we are currently under the Covid 19 restrictions, we called el Patron late this afternoon as we were passing by and picked up takeout of two different fajitas meals. We paid by credit card over the phone and called again when we arrived. The owner brought our order to us at the back door. Our meals were delicious. This place is so so good! One of my favorite places to go. Their tacos are delicious, the queso is phenomenal, the quesadillas are some of the best I've ever had. You get chips and salsa when you dine in. The salsa is so fresh and so good. The device is quick and the food always comes out in a reasonable time. Whoa! I live right down the road and now am kicking myself that I've never gone here before. The margarita and Paloma drinks were refreshing. I got the cochinita pibil for dinner and holy mac, it was AMAZING! The pork was perfectly cooked and there was so much meat I couldn't finish it--for the amount you pay you get very generous portions of meat. Went on a Friday night, we stopped there on our way to a different Mexican restaurant in High Bridge. We should have kept going...on the upside, there is a full bar and the food is cheap. But it was mediocre at best, the chicken in the enchiladas was plain shredded chicken (no sauce or seasoning). The refried beans tasted like they were straight out of a can. My husband's meal was also 'meh'. Servers were trying, but inexperienced. We won't be back. read more

My first time here and the food and service were both excellent! The waiter was terrific and passionately answered our questions about the menu! I really liked the hot sauce that comes in an old Corona Beer bottle with a drizzle top. I asked our friendly waiter if I could get two bottles to bring home. He returned with two brown lunch bags each with a 5oz bottle of hot sauce inside. When I got home I opened the bag and realized that he hot sauce was already opened. It had a drizzle top that was leaking as it was only covered with a small piece of aluminum foil. I cleaned up the mess. I then pulled out the credit card receipt from our dinner as at the time it felt pretty high for what we had ordered. I am leaving two stars because I feel like this place took advantage of a guest having a great night out with friends. At the end of the bill it says "open food" and I was charged an extra $34. For the hot sauce. That tells me how they work - so despite a great meal with great service, I will not be back. read more
