El Sol has very pretty placemats
Todd R.

I love El Sol. Good family style recipes, great folks, dependable, excellent old-fashioned Mexican. The enchiladas combo is a great standard once a week lunch treat.

Enchiladas and Tamales Lunch Platter - Sauce, beans, cheese all seem to meld together (4 stars)

Updated review after 8 years! Point Richmond is an unusual little town. Rarely do you see three Mexican restaurants (Masa, Maya, and El Sol) located within a block and all doing reasonably well, even post COVID19 shutdowns. We recently had a group lunch here, since our guest was craving Mexican. He's visiting from the East Coast, and said even the worse Bay Area Mexican food is decent compared to the limited options in his area. The food and service is still pretty good here. Free chips with individual salsa bowls. Lots of mix and match lunch combos. My enchilada and tamale plate came with tons of rice, refried beans, and a whole lot of cheese. Decent , affordable and very filling! They have a sizable menu too with mole, carne asada and various item using tiger prawn. Probably best to come here for a quiet, intimate lunch. Masa down the street probably has better food but is on the louder side. Maya is great for takeout but only has limited patio seating. Raising my rating to 4 stars for indoor dining.

** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** After sauntering along the seaside at Miller-Knox Regional Shoreline, Jamie W. and I sometimes find ourselves in the small hamlet of Point Richmond because it exudes a bit of Mayberry-like charm on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It was only recently that we took a deeper look at this compact Mexican spot and recognized it as a sister operation to the El Sol in Rodeo (review: https://bit.ly/2UMkD6z). We discovered that spot when we took a detour on one of our walks on the San Pablo Bay Regional Trail. We liked the $10 Tiger Prawn Salad so much in Rodeo that we got giddy when we saw it on the menu here through the window. Unfortunately it's closed on Sundays despite a bunch of "We're Open" signs that someone must've forgotten to take down. So on the following Friday, as I was coming off the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge from the city, I spontaneously made a beeline back to El Sol and ordered a couple of those salads for our dinner. It was just as we remembered it, a hearty bed of iceberg lettuce topped with avocado slices, fresh salsa, pinto beans, shredded cheddar cheese, and several grilled tiger prawns (photo: https://bit.ly/2Pq5OGu). Friday turned out to be a good night to stop by because they were offering an $8.50 bowl of Chicken Pozole that was rich and full of hominy and poultry parts (photo: https://bit.ly/3ssZpJo). With the shredded lettuce, chopped onions, and lime wedges, it was quite a treat and made me want to come back and try the menudo. FOOD - 4 stars...succulent tiger prawns and rich pozole AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...looks cozy in here SERVICE - 4 stars...an industrious crew TOTAL - 4 stars...that salad was worth the trip RELATED - Hanging out in Richmond? Carnitas street tacos. Very good!
Daniel A.

Was looking for a nice light dinner before going to the theater next door. Decided to give this place a try. Decided to try the street tacos with carnitas. They were really good! Straight forward tacos. Came out super hot. The carnitas was very tender. Definitely coming back again next week! Just what I was hoping for!

Many people walk into restaurants for two reasons only, to inhale food and judge the customer service. Many people forget to take in the environment and the culture. When I walk into El Sol Restaurant, I am greeted by an open kitchen surrounded by beautiful Mexican women. The atmosphere of watching the older generation pass down culinary traditions to their young allows me to feel as if I am home cooking with my loved ones. I really loved listening to the women speaking in their native tongue, enjoying one another's company. The establishment has an open seating option, so i chose my seat. I was immediately helped by the waitress and she was really laid back yet attentive. I ordered 4 fish tacos which came with avocado, onions, and cilantro on corn tortillas. I try not to add extra onto street inspired tacos, because the idea of it is to focus more on the flavor of the meat or seafood. The avocado gave the taco a creamy aspect that meshed well with the onions and cilantro. The fish was cooked to perfection. It was so soft that it literally melted in your mouth. I actually enjoyed the salsa. I loved to taste fresh tomato and the citrus. The only thing I could say, is the flavoring needs more work. It felt like the taco was missing something. Maybe creating a simple sauce or working on the seafood flavoring could be tweaked. It felt as if I had to add salsa from my chips to give it a little flavor.

Food was absolutely delicious , I ordered 3 chicken street Tacos , chicken was juicy and very flavorful. Chips and salsa was very good, staff were polite and respectful , parking could be hard to find so come early.

The food was ok, I wouldn't eat there again, the chicken flautas wasn't seasoned. It was bland.

The menu offers a good variety of Mexican inspired dishes, from tacos and birria ramen and burritos. Everything we tried had great flavor and was clearly made fresh. The sauces, seasoning and overall balance of the dishes were definitely the highlight of the meal. We ordered quite a few items including quesabirria, shrimp tacos, a burrito and birria ramen. The shrimp tacos were especially flavorful, topped with a creamy sauce that paired really well with the shrimp. The quesabirria tacos also had that nice crispy texture with the rich birria flavor that people look for. The restaurant itself is clean, organized and well set up, with outdoor seating available which is nice on a sunny day. It has a relaxed vibe where you can sit down with friends and enjoy your food without feeling rushed. The only thing I noticed across several of the dishes was that the portions of meat felt a little light compared to the tortilla or toppings. The flavor is absolutely there, but a slightly more generous portion of meat would make these dishes even better. Overall, solid spot with great flavor and a fun menu. With just a little more generosity on the protein portions, this place could easily be a standout taco spot.

Believe me, I've been to MANY other burrito places around and most all of them just give you a beans and rice burrito with a tiny bit of meat. This place at least gives you an expected amount of meat in your burrito. The location could be considered 'hole in the wall' but that does not bother me and I like to support local small businesses. I will be back here!

I grabbed a burrito here and ate it inside the movie theater with the red salsa and lemon, and it was so good I ate the entire thing. For context, I'm pretty petite and I usually can't finish a full burrito--but this one? I couldn't stop. It was that good. Super flavorful, satisfying, and just hit the spot in a way I wasn't expecting. At first, I thought it was a little pricey, but once you get the burrito, it makes sense. It's dense, filling, and honestly a big burrito--you're getting your money's worth. I've already been recommending this place to my friends, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for genuinely good food. I'm excited to come back and try more items on the menu. So good. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the East Bay.

Our server Chevo was running around but got everyone's order correct. The food came out hot and beautifully presented. The place is nicely decorated and had about 1 or 2 customers already. 2 dishes came out at the same time while the other 3 came to the table a few minutes later. The food was ok. My parents got the Mi Casa Desayuno. The waitress told my dad they were out of the fruit salad, which was weird, since the place had just opened. I guess they never had fruit in the first place. My brother choked on a large piece of plastic in his Tres Leches French Toast. I told one of the male staff members there was plastic in his dish, and he just said, "Sorry, it was probably the plastic from the bread's packaging," and then walked away. A few minutes later, I saw the waitress and pulled her aside to discreetly tell her there was plastic in my brother's meal. She told me she wanted to see it ( kind of with a tone of 'I don't believe you'), and I brought her over to the dish to show her. She didn't say anything, so I said we would happily pay for the other dishes, but could my brother's meal be comped for the choking hazard? The waitress turned and went to the kitchen, to, I guess, talk to someone about it. The waitress came back out, took the dish away, probably to show whoever was in the kitchen. A while later, she came back out with the check, but did not bother to explain to us what the plan was from there. We did see a 50% markdown on my brother's dish. It was really awkward because the waitress did not have a very pleasant or inviting attitude; she stood there glaring as we reviewed the bill and figured out the payment method. There was a serious lack of communication (not due to a language barrier; we are a Spanish-speaking family) and an unnecessary, blasé and mean demeanor from the waitress on Mother's Day.
