This has been my favorite Mexican food restaurant for at least 10 years! I lived in San Antonio and would want to eat here when I came to the Dallas area to visit. If I was here for conferences or driving through, I would bring my students, colleagues and friends here for a "Grand Street" experience and a yummy lunch. Now, those students, colleagues and friends request to go there when they are in town! My go to is a #3. 3 Chalupas (one beef, one bean, one guacamole) and a tea. (one of the only places I order tea...not sure why that is...but I do!) Others have had the nachos, enchiladas, tacos...and have not had anything negative to say about their meals. It is for sure in a sketchy part of town, but in my experiences, the "hole in the wall" no chain restaurant is the best. I typically visit at lunch, have no issues getting a table, and the prices for lunch specials are good. The inside isn't anything to write home about, but the food...I never found a substitute in all the years of living in San Antonio. Service can be hit or miss. No doubt you will always get your food. I am 33 years old and Taquito Café has been a trademark to this comunity. My mother has been coming here since before I was born. This used to be our little secret spot on her way to work. Even as an adult, I have celebrated my birthday here, I come here early in the mornings before work. I am distraught about its closure. I wish they would have given us some closure. This review is being redone based on new owner reopening. I think everyone is excited about Taquitos comeback. I was. Well it's new ownership so not exactly the same thing as the classic. The salsa is different. It's still good but def different. I ordered the classic cheese enchiladas. Oh btw the menu is different too. My typical Sonora plate was nowhere to be found. The order I received was incorrect which was unfortunate but instead of three cheese enchiladas I got one chicken one beef and one cheese. They are different but they were good. All three were pretty good. Beans tasted the same and rice was a little different as well. Overall it was good but if you're expecting the taquito of old, this has some similarities but is not the original taquito. So despite the "comeback" it's got some of the vibe and some of the taste but again not the original. It's pricey too but that is a sign of the times. read more

Cash only is a hard proposition these days, and it's easier than ever for businesses to take cards. If the food was amazing, I might go out of my way to get cash, but it's not, and I won't. The chips didn't seem fresh, and the green salsa was more heat than flavor. It's also served cold, which is against my religion. I had the two-taco lunch, which comes with rice and beans and a beverage for $7.95. I added a guacamole tostada for $3. The tacos were adequate, with tasty meat, plenty of diced tomatoes and cheese, but maybe too much lettuce. The beans and rice were good, but not quite warm enough. The guacamole was also good, but the tostada was also mostly lettuce. And the iced tea was weak. Still, the meal scratched an itch and the price was certainly right. But there is lots of great Mexican food in Dallas, and it just wasn't good enough to inspire a return visit. read more

I haven't been there in a couple of months and had a craving... made the drive from Irving just to find that it was gone! When I moved here from Far West Texas 27 years ago, this was one of the first places recommended to me. I've been going there since I was a teenager. I'm 60 now and been married for 39 yrs. My kids have grown up going there. This place gave me fond memories of sitting in my mother-in-Laws cramped kitchen sitting around her table eating Menudo on weekends discussing the previous week's events. The service and food was really bad. The tortillas tasted nasty, not fresh. Tons of grease was coming out of the breakfast taco, you can see all the grease on the plate. And the menudo was the worst. I ordered a large bowl and for a small bowl. The pieces were so big I didn't eat it because I thought I would choke, and there was absolutely no hominy in it at all. This little gem is well known to the folks in the area. It's a small Tex-Mex restaurant, with some tasty grub and friendly service. I had the barbacoa plate, which came with a side of rice and beans, as well as flour tortillas. The meat was properly prepared, and I was very excited to find a joint that actually uses beef cheek and head to make their barbacoa. Many locations use chuck, eye of round, or other cuts to make barbacoa, and that is just not correct (in my personal opinion). The meat itself was very tender (one of the benefits of using the head meat), and had a very tasty savory flavor. Simple, yet delicious, as it should be. Rice and beans were a great accompaniment, and though the tortillas were not made in-house, they weren't bad; but obviously in-house would have been much better. Great little spot for some breakfast, or any time of day really; I just really enjoy some tasty barbacoa in the AM, how can you go wrong with that? Lol read more

My husband loves the Menudo here because it's super spicy. I love the Caldo de Res and the T bone a la Mexicana. Also try the El Taquito special its beef guise rice and beans 2 chicken flautas pico de gallo and fresh guacamole. Can't go wrong with anything here. Just a warning wait for your beverage before you start eating the hot sauce which consists of jalapeno, jalapeno and jalapeno. read more

We have been going here for years. We would go more if they took credit cards. The only time we go is when we have cash in our pockets. I refuse to go to an ATM to eat. Husband got Menudo, and he says it was average. I ordered the cheese enchilada, cheese taco, beans and rice plate. His Menudo came out first, and I made him go ahead and eat. I ordered the Cheese Taco, Cheese Enchilada, rice & beans. Unfortunately, it was apparent when my plate came out that my plate had been under the salamander and forgotten. The plate was scorched and so was some of the food. I ate it anyway. It was good, and is the typical tex-mex style. The server was polite and kept coming out to say that my food would be ready soon. Everything we have ever had (and we have had most of the things on the menu) are pretty good. Not great. The salsa is pretty dang hot, the chips are good especially when they are fresh. That pesky "cash only" rule is annoying. Good prices for what you get. There is so much competition with good Mexican food that we go places we enjoy more now. We went because it was close and fast. Possibly I'm being a little too critical with a 3* rating, but the I found the caldo de res ($10.50) a little too greasy and overcooked for my taste. I really liked the people here, though, and I'll definitely return to try something different from the menu. read more

When I think hole in the wall Tex-Mex, El Taquito Cafe always comes to mind. What I don't love is the price increases. There is another hole in the wall Tex-Mex place I like, and their prices are not near as high. I would've given this place a 3.5 star rating, but the service was great and our server was incredibly friendly, so I bumped it up to a 4 star review. The neighborhood, not the best and the interior of the restaurant is a no frills, no thrills typical hole in the wall joint. This is the main reason I believe their price increase is not warranted. As a female, I do not visit El Taquito alone in the evening/nighttime. CASH ONLY and the walls are plastered with signs indicating the payment policy. There is a row of parking up front, but then you have to back out onto Grand Ave., so your best bet is to park in the unmarked parking lot a few doors down from the restaurant where you see a split in the strip of buildings. Chips and salsa- I love their chips and couldn't stop eating them. The salsa- very spicy and delicious. They serve butter with your chips and salsa to cool down the heat, if needed. Spread the butter on the chip, then dip in the salsa. I had the crispy taco dinner 3 tacos with rice and beans for $8.75- 2 chicken, 1 beef, rice and beans. The chicken was superior to the beef. The rice, plain and simple, just the way I like it. The beans- I love them, no additions needed and they are not overly salted. Verde Chicken Enchiladas, 3 enchiladas with rice and beans for $10.75- I was able to snag a bite and they were awesome. I loved the flavors of this dish. Verde sauce was spot on. GREAT fast and friendly service, that will keep you coming back. The best times to visit are lunch and Wednesdays due to the specials and prices (In my opinion, the way they should be). Negatives- cash only, parking, some menu items are priced a little high on regular/non-special dishes POSITIVES- service, salsa, really good hole in the wall Tex-Mex dishes, portions will leave you full and happy YES, I will return, and I will be sure it's on a Wednesday. read more

My first visit, I got a puffed beef taco, tamales, bean and cheese chalupa, ranchero beans. One of the best tacos, the beef is seasoned just right and not greasy. The tamales was very good with the chili con carne sauce. Everything was so delicious! The green sauce wasn't all that when you eat it with chips, but when you put it on your taco, or chalupa or any food it just taste really good with the food and compliments it. I love this place...Although, it's off the beaten path for me being that I live way up North near Farmers Branch area. This place sure is a Awesome place to eat at....There are 2 downsides to eating here though; 1.) They do not accept Credit Cards here (are you kidding me) what Century do we live in??? 2.) They do not have a Soda Fountain Machine so it can be costly with each can of pop or bottled soda you drink. I do not care for the selection of sodas they carry here and makes me wanna bring my own...(wait I think I'ma Smuggle in my own cans of Big Red or Mug Root Beer with me next time)!! The decor is so outdated and makes you feel like your visiting a child's bedroom rather than a Mexican food joint, it could really use a fresh coat of paint and maybe a great dusting off of all those Childish knick knacks on the Shelves. You guys could really become abit more upscale in the sense of decorating and adding all the Bells & Whistles that this place lacks as in adding a: Credit card Machine (given the area I am in I really do hate bringing cash with me to this neck of the woods. This is a solid, unspectacular Mexican restaurant. I suspect its sweet spot if the $5-6 lunch specials, earning points for quality and value. We ordered two of the pricier dinner menu options, carne asada and chile relleno. The relleno was well executed, solid and conventional. I enjoyed the refritos more than the rather bland rice. The carne asada was disappointing for a $14 dish here, using a heavily pounded, thin, unidentifiable piece of red meat, bland and undressed/unseasoned. Our server was patient with our sketchy command of Spanish, graciously meeting us in the middle. The place itself is ragged inside, and marginal at best outside, in this particular block. If I were a female, I would not walk on this block solo. Maybe I'll come back and try the value menu lunch, maybe not. One last swing to try the enchiladas for fajitas is possible, if I'm ever in the 'hood and hungry at lunch time. read more

They knew we were hungry and that's all that mattered. They didn't miss a beat.The food came fairly quick and all delicious. Enough space for you and friends. You have to check them out. First timer! You can smell all aroma of Mexican food deliciousness upon walking in. We came during the Sunday lunch rush but were seated promptly. The tortilla chips are thin and crispy with spicy salsita like my abuelita's. After all the money that we have put into this restaurant you would think that they would get new table and chairs and they don't they've had the same ones since they opened.. The food has gone down hill and it's very expensive. Today when I ordered my food I had hair in it so they sent it back and made me a new play the new plate was chicken enchiladas which which has bones in it And was dangerous for me to eat. The place is just outdated and they're really only show comfort to the regulars and family members.
