I usually go to a different location when I'm in town, but this one was just closer to where I was at. The food was just as good. Great tacos al pastor. The cebollitas on the other hand I would skip next time. For $3 I would expect real cebollitas, grilled spring onions. What they serve seems to be just sliced regular onions sautéed and drenched in maggie sauce. As far as the location goes, it's not as nice and inviting as the place I usually go to. Stop by "El Tizoncito" last night with some friends to enjoy some pastor tacos and I was trill to find a couple of nice surprises, first the air Conditioning was replace and the dining area is much cooler, the second is that Connie was there (She was at the Lemmon store for a wile). As always Ulises took great care of us and the food was delicious. Love the flavor of El Tizoncito but this location is poorly managed compared to the other locations I've been too and also, our waitress was very unprofessional although I can tell she did her best. We asked her if they had like courtesy chips and she brought us an expensive order of guacamole with chips without asking if that's what we wanted. Girl: before adding stuff to someone's bill you need to ask if that's what they want! Other than that... our table was very close to the grill and I could feel the heat burning my back all the time we were there, we were sweating and we couldn't switch to another table because the place was packed, so if you go I don't recommend you sit on that table, they need to do some relocation and think better how they sit the client. read more

Welcome to yet another "Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover" story, this one a little different from what you might think. When it comes to authentic mexican street tacos, I personally prefer hole-in-the-wall, non-English speaking, questionable restroom kind of places, and generally snub my nose at anything that even remotely smells of cleaning supplies or clever marketing schemes. So when P2 and I rolled up to El Tizoncito in South Oak Cliff, after recommendations from the likes of Andrew Chalk and Margie at Eating in Dallas, I was slightly disappointed at how...commercial it looked. It wasn't just the shopping center location, the relatively new building or the well-designed logo that was putting me off -- the place was cleaner than any taqueria I've ever been to, probably any fast food restaurant as well. I thought without a doubt that we were about to overpay and under-enjoy every moment of our time there, but luckily, I was completely wrong. The first thing that you'll notice when you walk in the door, after the initial shock of cleanliness, is the trompo sitting directly behind the counter next to the grill (which is also a sight in itself, being about the size of a circular family dinner table) We chose to sit at the counter in front of the grill so we could enjoy watching our tacos being made, and after a quick look over the menu ordered a couple of margaritas. Fair warning, there are no drink specials and margaritas are $5, but they certainly don't short you on tequila. We also ordered the Choriqueso, a chorizo and cheese mixture on flour tortillas, which of course we were able to watch come to life as well. Now I will only say this once, so read it well: You MUST order the Choriqueso. I kid you not, I would have driven to Mexico if necessary to taste this dish. It was delicious, albeit one of the greasiest things I've ever eaten, but so savory and amazing, I didn't care. It's a must-order item. Must. I almost forgot to mention, but moments after we sat down, our waitress brought out two small bowls of bean soup (black beans with cilantro, which I added a little verde to) in lieu of chips and salsa, as well as all the necessary condiments we would need for our meal -- red and green salsa, onion, cilantro, lime and tiny chunks of pineapple. When our tacos came out, which was just as we were finishing our appetizer, we topped both our meals with our choice of toppings (my three Pastor tacos got a little bit of everything, P2s Bistek tacos everything but the pineapple and red salsa) and dug in. It. Was. Heavenly. The pastor had a little bit of char to it (a good thing in my book) and was tender and moist on the inside, with a hint of zest and spice (which could have also been the verde I added to the top), and an added sweetness from the pineapple that I found very enjoyable. I traded P2 for one of her tacos, and have to say the Bistek was also very yummy. It was tender beef with some great seasoning, and didn't carry nearly as much grease with it as mine had. We skipped out on dessert because we were stuffed, so that's something I'll be sure to try next time I go by. This place is very good. As in, despite the 25 minute drive getting there and the hour drive back (traffic was a monster thanks to an accident), I will go back. Often. Because I still haven't told you the best part about this place -- The pastor and bistek tacos are only $1.50 each. Yes, I know that's more expensive than some of the other taquerias around town, but I'm telling you, it's worth the few extra dimes for a fantastic meal you're sure to go back for. The customer service is stellar, the presentation is hard to beat and the food is excellent. I can't wait to go back and try out a few of the other items on their extensive menu. read more

What a find! Think Urban Taco, but without all the chichi whathaveyou that pleases the gringo faithful. This place serves up great authentic tasting Mexican food, including the aforementioned Pastor (a la vertical rotating spit). Everything we tried was excellent including the tacos, tortas and kebabs. I loved the bean soup that they bring out for starters. Also, the tamarind margarita was great, but if you are looking for something different, try a chelada (although this was typically what I would call a michelada...). Ok so check it. Living in the Cliff I have a TON of taco options, I mean bountiful amounts. I've been seeing reviews for this place and I'm all, ok great another new one to try. The man piece and I arrived around eh 8pm or so....they are open till 2AM on Sat! Anytimeframe, it's a cute new place. Very clean. Seems like a family place. We just walked in and sat wherever we wanted. Waiter promptly brought menus, which looked good. Its kinda all the same though. Chicken, Chicken with cheese, Beef, Beef with cheese, Pork with cheese, Pork. I think what they focus on is their tacos and tortas, however they did have some other lil options (in of course the three meats and/or with cheese). I don't eat anything pig, so my options are beef or chicken, I can make this work for sure. As far as drinks go, they have beer and margaritas. We started with their specialty Tamarind margaritas....holy cheeses, it was SO GOOD! Really enjoyed. Then we ordered this queso dish. Um, green peppers, onions and queso flamado on tortillas. This my friends was not only original but amazingly and totally shampoo worthy. BF got the Beef Torta and I got the Torta Milanese (beef). If you don't know what a torta is, its basically a Mexican sandwich served with pickled veggies. The bread is delicious and homemade. They also bring out this little lazy susan filled with condiments. Diced pineapple, onions, salsas, cilantros...etc. Very nice with your tortas! So our food comes. I see the milanese and then I see pink. Wha??? Oh, ham. Ok. I grab the menu on the table next to me to make sure I ordered right. Oh I did, but it doesn't say that this sandwich comes with ham on it. If you want to make me mad, this will do it. IF YOU ARE GOING TO PUT ANOTHER MEAT ON A SANDWICH YOU NEED TO PUT IT ON THE MENU!!! People who eat pork sometimes don't like it on something random. My BF would live in a pig if he could and he was irritated. That's like if a vegetarian ordered an eggplant sandwich and a strip of bacon came on it. Ugh, so this was literally like a kick in the nuts. I was pissed. I took off the ham and doused it with pineapple and salsas to drown out the flavor. Anyway, after all that bitching, the sandwich itself (minus the ham) was actually really good. The pickled veggies were a little too much for me, but I only ate half the torta and was stuffed. Oh and its really cheap too. $5 for the torta. I think tacos are $1.50- $2. Saweet! I will be back, but I will def be sure and ask what else comes on the sandwich if I decide to order a torta again. Oh. Em. Gee. I loved everything here: my tacos al pastor were phenomenal and prepared right in front of me which is always a good sign. The pork was tender and flavorful, and every bite was solid. I also loved the chicken nachos which were made using whole corn tortillas instead of chips. They were like tiny tostadas. The salsas were well-balanced and had great heat to them. I really enjoyed my salsa verde. The black beans were also a great appetizer, and I like that this establishment skips past the chips and salsa--I promise you won't miss them. I'd be remiss not to mention the delicious frozen tamarind margarita which had some excellent flavor to it, and came in a glass rimmed with spicy/salty/lemon-y salt. read more

This review is about the service since I wasn't able to actually eat here. Heard the food was good and I like to visit local businesses as much as possible. I tried to order to go; however, when I called and asked for someone who speaks English please, I was told no, Spanish only. No apology, no attempt to help, just no. I don't expect everyone to be fluent in English, but there wasn't one person there who can take an order in English? The website and menu are in English for goodness sake. This was the final stop on the taco tour of Dallas. By now, we had each eaten ~5 tacos and getting full. But, we had been to the original El Tizoncito in Mexico City and had to see whether the newly opened Dallas outpost was just as good. It's in a converted Starbucks, and it was very clean and modern on the inside. Very different from the typical Dallas taqueria. It's also in a pretty new strip mall with the fanciest Fiesta i had ever seen. Since it had just opened the service was impeccable. We sat at the counter, and ordered 2 tacos al pastor and 2 chuleta, as well as a Sol each. The best part? This was the only place that served its tacos al pastor with PINEAPPLE - very authentic!! The tacos are made right there in front of you, so you know they are fresh. They also offer you a small bowl of black bean stew before you start your meal, like a Mexican amuse bouche. This place is in a pretty residential area, so you'll have to make the trip out to experience the tacos. read more

I took the train out to Westmoreland station today with the idea I was going to have have Herrera's for a cup of bean soup and wait service for around $10. Oops, I forgot they are closed on Tuesdays and so is Tachito's. Yelp to the rescue! El Tizoncito is only a block further west, sharing a building with a Bank of America branch and met all my criteria. I ordered an iced tea without even looking at the menu and was subsequently surprised to see one of the reviews said they didn't have iced tea. The waiter brought me a nice glass of iced tea and kept it filled. It was fresh brewed, fairly strong with a good flavor from a major brand. The starter of black bean soup was a nice surprise. The flavor was good and the caddy of 2 salsas, diced onions, cilantro and lime wedges meant I could tweak it if necessary. It didn't need any help, except maybe a little more time to simmer down and thicken up a bit. The beans were done, the soup was just a little watery for my tastes. I ordered the Parrillada Tizoncito which is basically a combination taco platter. It came with 4 street-sized double-layer corn tortilla tacos, a similar sized quesadilla on a flour tortilla, and a ramekin of bright green guacamole. The quesadilla was plain, but used a good white cheese. It stood up well to each of the salsas and guacamole. The guac was also fairly basic, seasoned just enough to keep it from being bland. It looked like each taco was a different meat or a different preparation, although I had trouble distinguishing them. I dressed them up in alternating salsas and and sparing amounts of condiments. They were all good, but not great, the flavors of the meat getting lost in all the corn tortilla layers. The one that stood out was my least favorite. I'm guessing it was the pastor with their house adobo. I was teetering on the 4th star when I realized how much I was grumbling. The service was quite good, the presentation outstanding, the prices were right on for what I got, the food had its moments and I'm sure I'll visit again to try some other items and see what I'm missing. read more

Good, real Mexico-city style tacos...and I should know, I grew up there. The Pastor tacos are awesome, with pineapple, cilantro and fresh onion, and the Chuleta con queso (pork and cheese) and Bistec (steak) are not bad at all either. They have Mexican sodas and beer as well. Staff is very attentive and the place is super clean. Prices are very reasonable, from $1.50 to $2.50 per taco, and each taco comes with two tortillas and a lot of meat so you can really make two tacos from each one. So this is my new favorite taqueria...way better than Taco Diner at a fraction of the price. I've already been there twice this week, and the people I've taken from my office loved it. Unbelievably amazing, simple, cozy place to eat crispy, cheesy, meaty foods with delicious fresh salsas. True Dallas soul food! I came on a Saturday morning- Good coffee is hard to come by but the coffee here was so GOOD. I reco the chicken+potato flautas. Kabob style method of cooking meat (pastor=pork/beef/chicken) so the menu revolves round well-marinated+cooked meats in generous portions= quesadillas, tacos,nachos etc. with delicious garnishes(cilantro, onions, lined, red+green salsa). I also tried the tamarind margarita- small glass for $7 but good. We were served black bean soup when we arrived as opposed to chips and salsa- the beans were fresh and good. This Oak Cliff Tex-Mex establishment is a wired little differently than your typical taco shop. Yes, the word "taqueria" is somewhere on the front door, but it is a straight-up sit and order joint. Don't be expecting to get your 20-second, 2-ingredient, $1.15 tacos so common to the promised land of Texas. Expect to be greeted with a nice bowl of black bean soup. I don't know how this was deserving of a spot in Dallas' "Top 100 dishes" last year, but at least it was complimentary... Yes, the beans were soft, and I know for a fact they put meat parts in the soup--I saw a few various pieces of fat. It was just terribly underseasoned for homemade. In fact, canned black beans w/ jalapenos (you know the ones I'm talking about, you convenience hounds) boast more unique character. There is more of a chance you might hit a gem with some of the taco or torta selections, but what they have to offer in terms of full-service dining is not up to par with the regional Mexican joints so loved by Dallas nowadays. The menu is still no more exciting than your "El Taco Shack" or "Taco and More" sorts of establishments. If they turned this eatery into a fast-casual, I might be more on board... but they are giving you good Tex-Mex quality in a slow, pretentious manner. Not my cup o' tea. I might make my way to some of their more finely cared-for spots in the OC or maybe even drop in to a real nitty-gritty "hole in the wall" to-go stand. El Pastor Pork tacos, with pineapple, cilantro and diced onions, on corn tortillas, were absolutely great. The Pork is roasted on a vertical grill similar to greek restaurant meat grilling, which makes the meat taste great. House red and green sauce and a squeeze of lime finish up the tacos. They also have Tortas, Sopes, and Quesadillas, Your typical Taqueria experience, and a great selection of Mexican beverages to wash it all down with. Yes, even beer and a house Margarita that's not bad. Owner is super friendly but tends to profile Gringos (assumes we are afraid to eat the real deal) LOL, so just be forceful about wanting to drink Tamarindo or Horchata if you want it, don't let him talk you into something milder :)) read more

Delicious tacos al pastor. Very authentic overall. They give you beans at the beginning which are really good. We also tried the cheese chicharron and I liked the fact that they give you unlimited salsas, cilantro, onion, pineapple to put in your tacos. The horchata water was excellent. The only thing I would change is the cebollitas (onions), they should use the cambray style cebollitas instead of chopped onion. They close at 1 am so excellent place after going for some drinks. read more

My husband and I have been to El Tizoncito at least half a dozen times. Leo is the owner and he treats us well. He is very passionate about his restaurant and treating people right. We live downtown so it is a little bit of a drive but well worth it. I love the El Pastor tacos and my husband loves the barbacoa. I've never had a street taco with pineapple. Their red sauce that they make from scratch is excellent. The margaritas are much better than Iron Cactus or Taco Diner or any other restaurants out there. The atmosphere is very fresh looking and clean. We try and make it at least once a month. read more

The managers response, "we're all overwhelmed." Wow...so it's the customers fault? GTFOH At the end of a $90 tab, they tell me the credit machine is down. RAN out in pouring rain to find an ATM, but the whole neighborhood was offline. The manager said, "just leave your information, you have my WORD, no problems..." Ok I went in with high expectations due to the feedback left on yelp.com However an important fact was left out. Indeed the food is good not great but good. The prices are too high for the amount of food you get. 3 flautas for 8.00 no side dishes just 3 flautas. The kids meals was what I consider cheap, $4.00. However the tortillas are mini tortillas. You get a choice of two tacos but leave out "mini". They are two small and won't fill up any 6 yr old boy! Won't be going back any time soon! read more

Lets start with the bad. parking is a nightmare/location right next to a BOA. Ok the food, this is what I ordered with my wife and 2 year old. The kid got 2 beef tacos (real beef) not the stuff from taco bell,I am assuming he enjoyed them as he scarfed both of them down, real aguas lemonade or limonada tasted somewhat bland watered down too much. for appetizer we ordered the queso with chorizo was very good. My wife ordered 3 tacos al pastor and a sope she claims the sope was tasty but the tortilla was to thin and was crunchy like a frozen pizza, she also enjoyed the tacos, and said this is as close to Mexico as we can get. I ordered the Torta El Tizoncito, nice size good portions of Alpastor meat and chicken fried steak. lots of aguacate,tomatoe,onions,black beans not a bad torta, but nothing to set it apart from the rest. I have eaten tacos al pastor in Mexico and these were a bit bland and dry. Horchata drink my wife ordered was good and cold just a tad to much cinnamon, and I had a michelada, nice taste but a bit too much lime. Salsa presentation is good not a big selection and if you have been to a real taco place in Mexico you know what I mean, place is nice and clean, not your regular taco joint (Preppy tacos?) I mainly come here for a quick lunch at work. They're fairly quick and decently priced. To-go tacos come with all the toppings in separate containers, which is pretty cool. Three small tacos are a decent lunch with nice flavor. The inside and the dining experience in the restaurant seems like it's trying to look like some sort of fancy establishment. I'm not sure it totally pulls that off. Kind of a strange vibe for a place selling street-esque tacos. As far as street tacos go, I think the area has better for cheaper, but this is not a bad gig and it's very convenient. read more

Um... I've had an experience where two orders of tacos came out over cooked and extremely raw :( I did tell my waitress and got one taco back. I was disappointed in their lack of of customer service in that aspect. I didn't leave satisfied and vowed never to come back. After that, I've returned twice. My Dad drove here and I was like," ugh! Why didn't you let me know beforehand." But he was hungry and obviously wanted to eat here. The experience this time around was just okay. The beans are under seasoned and I didn't finish them. The tacos de bistec weren't tough but lacked flavor, sazón. I wanted to taste the meat! I ended adding salt to one and let someone else take the other one. I hate throwing away food! I also ordered the tacos al pastor. They were good with lots of salsa to amp up a bit the taste. And they were okay. The bistec sope had a dollop of sour cream that tasted funny, maybe it was 'Agria Crema' ? To each their own and I let my Dad finish it because he seemed to like it.
