Wanted this to be more than a 3-star, but honestly that's pretty much where this one should live based on my one experience. The service was friendly but they seemed pretty understaffed, even though the place was pretty much empty in-between lunch and dinner rushes. The Arroz con Pollo wasn't bad, but not that great, either. The chicken had that day-old, leftover chicken taste--pretty sure it was probably not cooked to order, but I was hungry so I ate it. Rice was fine. Their spicy salsa upon request was really good, however. Ambiance wasn't that great, most all of the booths, chairs etc. looked second hand and had lots of rips, tears, and wear. Service was great. Atmosphere was nice. We sat outside. Only drawback was that Fred the cat sat next to us and begged for food for quite a long while in between visiting other tables. We ordered street tacos, enchiladas, and a chile relleno. The food literally came in 2 minutes from the time we ordered. Our server almost apologized for how early he delivered the food. This is when I should not have ignored the major red flag that went off in my head! How do you make enchiladas and rellenos in 2 minutes when you have to bake them for like 15 minutes to cook them properly?! Were we lucky and we go an order someone had already put in and then cancelled? Did they somehow magically know what we wanted before we arrived and looked at the menu? No, it turns out they did *not* even bake the rellenos or chile rellenos! They assembled them like the street tacos and decided to serve them to us and hoped we wouldn't notice! Because we were so hungry and the non-confrontational type, my girlfriend and I just sat there and ate it. She ate the dry rolled corn tortillas and I ate the runny relleno. The street tacos were properly made but the grilled chicken on one and beef on another were dry. The carnitas was decent though had chunks entirely of fat. Clearly something was up in the kitchen when we ate there. A new chef that didn't know how to cook standard Mexican dishes? I think rather something more nefarious was going on and they were in a rush and decided to pull one over us. And we let them do it without speaking up. I feel ashamed that I did not ask our server to immediately bring back to the kitchen and find out what was going on! Just went here with a good friend of mine. Food was excellent!! His California Burrito was huge!! It looked delicious and I wished I'd have got it!!! I got the Chicken Fajita taco salad. OMG!!!!. It was Awesome, so good in fact that I ate the bowl too!!! Their drinks were huge! Got a refill but probably didn't need it. My favorite favorite Mexican restaurant they have the best tea I can't get enough of and as far as for the honest, hard-working family that runs the place you do an excellent job your Mexican food to me being from Texas is almost like home and I went in there once and I wanted to order something small the burrito I ordered was as big as the plate and I had a steak knife sticking in it and it was only $10 so I wasn't expecting much but OMG I can't get enough it's got sour cream. The whole works guacamole everything everything you want and that's something small so you can imagine how good the fajitas for two are OMG I haven't had them in a long time but I sure miss him as soon as I get money saved up I'd love to go there again they're Reasonably priced for every day consumers so that everyone has a chance to enjoy a nice dinner out with the family and enjoy the good food to think that speaks volumes for the family that runs it and put in so much hard work but I think they should sell those Coca-Cola glasses that and that they have they serve the tea and they're so big because they're awesome And everyone would like a chance to be able to buy them so they could have them at their home just a little suggestion and keep that tea coming because it's excellent. Food was the most disgusting we have ever had, my husband ordered the nachos. The nachos had mainly onions and peppers and covered in pepper, the chips were so soggy with grease and water it was pathetic, my husband tried to pick out the peppers and onions and most of the chicken was covered in pepper and the paper napkin was literally soaking wet from all the grease that when grabbing the napkin to place on plate it ripped. He grabbed two chips to try to eat what beef was on there and he literally spit it out. Took literally an hour to get someone's attention as they checked on almost every table but ours, then when we talked to waiter he said he would grab the manager. The manager said, " you should of ordered the chips on the side and they wouldn't be soggy". I'm like WHAT?!! He said that he would total the receipt and when he came back my husbands dinner was taken off but he added two $5.70 tips!!!!! And it totaled just $3 under the original price we were given. Our two daughters picked out their onions and peppers and their napkins looked exactly like my husbands covered the entire napkin and they ordered the enchilada. When our oldest daughter asked for no onions and peppers. Our son ordered the chicken nuggets, I ordered the enchilada and I love spicy stuff but this was too much onion, my chicken was literally burnt almost all the way through. The girls had beef. The refried beans looked like dried almost dirrieah poop that was in sun at least two days, with the melted white cheese "if you want to call it that" looking like long maggots all over the dried poop refried beans. The guac wasn't fresh and tasted old, the sour cream looked like it had tiny chunks in it and it literally had tiny specks of ball type stuff all the way through it, some of the lettuce had brown specks on it. You figure for the price they charge you would get a decent meal. Nope! We only came here because the other Mexican restaurant was packed. Also they do not card anyone who orders an alcoholic beverage and their margaritas are made with a lot of alcohol that you have a buzz 1/4 way through. read more

Let's be honest... it's Moberly MO, and I think this is the only Mexican Restaurant, unless you count Taco Bell as Mexican. For not having anything in the area I'm going to say it's pretty darn good! This place gets two stars because of the wait staff. I understand that sometimes orders can be mixed up but it is not acceptable when the waiter keeps walking past and refuses to stop. I have been staying at the Moberly Inn on a business trip and have had a chance to eat here a few time and at different time. The staff seems to have taken some of the reviews seriously. They seem to have picked up the customer service aspect. They are friendly and checked on on many time. The chips were cold every time we ate there. I had the chimichunga with chicken the first night. Chicken is seems to be stewed with tomatoes and onions. I don't mind the cheese sauce and the side of sour cream, guac, and pico seemed about right. The next night I got the carnitas and they were over fried and unedable. I then tired the fajitas, which like another reviewer said, didn't come out sizzling. But decent flavor and again fair amount for toppings. I came to El Vaquero to celebrate a birthday with my family. The inside of the restaurant surpassed my expectations since the exterior was incredibly plain. But inside it was colorful: with Mexican- style painted chairs, tables, booths, & flashy Sombrero hats. We were seated immediately. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and quick to bring out refills, dips, and warm chips. The portions were enormous, you can definitely get one or two extra meals. And the prices were very reasonable. The menu had lots of options, including vegetarian and children's sections. I would definitely go to this restaurant again as well as recommend it to others. Maybe I'm a snob because I grew up by the Mexican border, but if the wait staff can't even pronounce the items on the menu correctly, that's a good sign that you might be in trouble. For my tastes, the menu lacked flavor and ethnic distinction. The food tasted like something that was defrosted out of a big freezer--then zapped with the microwave. They advertise the margaritas, and maybe getting liquored up is the only way this food will half way taste authentic. Seems like a missed opportunity. Too bad. El Vaquero used to be the best place to go ever. However last time i went the food was not up to par the chicken was not cooked all the way through the beef was very tough and very fatty. We waited a long time for our food and it was not good. the burrito was really soggy the whole meal made me think they stuck it on a plate in the microwave to heat it up and then sent it out. Personnally based on the review you are about to read i recommend Santa Fe: Mexican Resteraunt, also in Moberly, Mo. Very good food, excellent service, and a family owned restaraunt. Now about El Vaquero, where to start...first we were given a chipped glass. Then we got cold tortilla chips. The portions were way too big, the food smelled terrible, and I didn't get any refried beans (which was supposed to come with what I ordered). They just dropped the food on your table without saying anything or making sure we had the right food. I asked for no queso dip on my chicken and got a small amount of chicken under a mountain of queso dip. The waiters didn't check on us the entire time we were there and rarely said one word to us. I had to go to the counter where you pay to ask for a refill because of the terrible service. There were only 10 people there and it definitely didn't look busy. I will never eat here again. read more
