Having experienced many programs (5 kids ranging from elementary to adult), at many different schools, we are blown away by Mt Pleasant. This is education at its pinnacle, with kind, caring teachers who are committed to their students' excellence. They offer a classical liberal arts education, with emphasis on numeracy and literacy, but a good grounding in everything else. I really appreciate the efforts to foster public speaking skills and good character and work habits along with excellent academics. Your kids don't have to be brilliant to get in (mine were pretty average), just at grade level with demonstrated ability to focus and work responsibly. The entrance test is pretty easy. I think after testing for basic skills, the real thing they're looking for is behavioural info to see if the child can focus, or whether he will have a hard time sitting In a desk and will disrupt the rest of the students. The teachers take responsibility for making sure your kids learn and do their work, unlike the prevailing ethos at many schools where parents are considered the main educators. My kids have really responded. For the first time, they don't say "recess" or "lunch" is their favourite subject. Now they are excited about science, or LA or math or geography, and so proud of their accomplishments. I used to be so worried about my kids' education and had to put so much effort into teaching them at home. Thanks to Mt Pleasant, I can totally relax and be certain they will have the skills and habits to thrive at junior high, high school and in post-secondary. EDITED TO ADD: It's 3 years later and my husband and I agree that transferring our kids to this school was one of the best decisions we ever made as parents. My son is now in junior high after 2 years at MP and the transition was amazingly easy. The work habits and discipline he learned at MP made Grade 7 a total breeze. The only issue is that you will find MP kids are at least a year ahead of the regular curriculum in math, so you may need to supplement their math if you want them to stay accelerated. PS. The program isn't for everyone. It works best for kids who are able to sit and focus and who take instruction well. Disruptive classroom behaviour is not tolerated, so if this is a challenge for your kid, I would not recommend this program as you are only setting them up for butting heads with both their teacher and their classmates. On the other hand, contrary to some criticism I have read, this is not at all about making kids into robots. In fact, what I have found is that because all of the kids have a strong foundation of knowledge, this seems to result in a much higher level of discourse, debate and interest from them, in class and out of it. Because of the mock elections and debate in class, my son turned into a complete political junkie for the last provincial and federal election.

Okay, I'm not blood-related to any of the kids who attend the Cogito Program at Mount Pleasant…read moreElementary. But I used to work at the after-school care here, and saw what the kids are like after a hard day of Cogito. Cogito is a special academic program that uses explicit phonetics and repetition strategy to get the material into the kids' heads. They have regular homework everyday, and often the kids would do their homework in the daycare before their parents picked them up. I don't know about you, but I was never that diligent when I was seven years old. While I'll admit the program works, because these are some of the smartest kids I've ever seen, it does take a toll on them. The poor children are probably mentally exhausted, and want nothing more than to unleash all their pent-up energy from the whole day. Unfortunately right after school hours, when they're with the daycare staff! I think it's important to remember that all kids learn differently, so while Cogito may work wonders for some, it may not be the greatest for other kids, especially the ones who need to learn through hands-on activity. On that note, I will add that it's great for getting kids to read early. There's nothing like a five-year-old teaching you the difference between the "a" and "ai" phonemes!

My son has come so far this year thanks to the caring dedication of the staff. Each and every one of these ladies (teachers and assistants) is a treasure. My son has a gluten sensitivity, and Ms. Gloria went out of her way to bake gluten-free versions of all the baked goods they serve for snacks, and buy gluten-free treats for him to have on celebration days. I feel as though all the staff were very cautious with him and I can't express my gratitude for this enough. I delighted in hearing all about what he was learning. From the different continents, to planets in our solar system, it was all amazing. I can't believe the grasp he already has on phonetics and math. We are sad to be leaving the school, but will always look back on this experience fondly. Thank you for making my little guy's first school experience so exceptional.

We switched schools 2 years ago and did not know what to expect…read more We have 2 children enrolled and are very, very happy with the move. It was nerve wracking not knowing what it would be like. The teachers the kids have had are amazing and go above and beyond. The VP and Principal have been very transparent and honest when asking questions. I am very impressed at how well the faculty work together. You can tell that the teachers are happy, it really comes across in the communication to parents and the activities they put on to involve the parents with their children. I especially enjoyed Family Math Night. I now participate in the parent council and help out where I can (I work FT so don't have a lot of time). I am very happy with the Leader In Me practice they have adopted and love that the kids are encouraged to start and participate in their own clubs. Now having 2 years in this school, I can confidentially say this school faculty and staff are amazing. We are very happy here.

They do not focus on the positive just on the negative and the main focus of the school is to send kids to the office for every little thing from standing up at lunch hour to talking, to rolling your eyes, to doing absolutely nothing wrong. Their main focus in this school is not to nuture your self esteem, it is not to bring the best out in our children, and it is not to come up with positive solutions. They hire people (parents-who have absolutely no training) to help out with our children during recess and lunch hours and these people have absolutely no training when it comes to chilren's behaviours. These same people also lack patience. This school likes to think that they are doing but they are not. The prinicpal is very hard to work with, she can not understand things from the child's point of view. I have actually heard her yell at a child when he was trying to explain his situation. She thinks she is right and no one can change her mind. Parents can not deal with her either-many have said she is impossible-this school does not have a positive atmosphere-they focus on the negative and discipline-do not send your child here. i have pulled my girls out because of this-the kids in this school are hating school, the teachers are negative and they do not work well with the child. There are a few individual teachers that really do enjoy working with children but the ones that have been there for a very long time-it is time they move on a now they have absolutely no patience. The music teacher did not even teach music???? the majority of the kids spends time in the "think tank" as all the kids know the detention room-the principal does not say the kids do not get punished.....but yet they get kicked out for the dumbest things-they have a Zero tollerance policy for any "misbehaviour" but this school deserves a Zero for the way they treat our children. If you are considering this school-please talk to as many parent s as you can-Ms. Busby will smile and make it look like a great school-but the minute you need to actually talk to her-she will not budge and she is a very rude woman and very difficult to work with. As a principal it would be nice to have someone to work with and who is willing to work with your child when situations arise. DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILD IN THIS SCHOOL UNLESS IT REALLY IS YOUR LAST RESORT!!!!!!!!!
