Especially impressive were the wood shop where students design & build a 'tiny house' and then sell it, as well as the new Engineering and Construction center where there is a focus on much needed trades and technology. Selfishly, I was happy to see that records in Track & Field weren't too much better than those in my New York high school when I graduated 58 years ago.

Only reason I won't be completely honest and specific with with review is because I am almost…read morecertain the Niles faculty will cause even more issues for me as some kind of "revenge". Without putting my personal experience in too much, let me say things all students will experience. The school has a rodent problem. Multiple people, including staff, have found dead mice or rats in lockers. The school has also been redone in 2018, and faculty complains that it was done badly. Even basic features are messed up. The tile is off centered. The outlets by sinks are not water proofed, so they get ruined easily. The school set up is just strange. In some hallways, there is only a bathroom for one sex. The school has an attendance policy that can easily ruin your child's grade and definitely cause unneeded issues. Your child is allowed 5 absences a quarter. After that, every absence takes 5% off your grade. 5% is big, and niles wonders why 25% of their freshman were failing (according to the principal). Even if a parent calls in and/or the child has a doctors note, it doesn't matter. You can try to "appeal" the absence, but that basically never works. You can, however, serve detention to make it up. But detention makeup ends before the quarter/school year ends. The school is also not high in national or state rankings. The efficiency rate in English is only 60%, and math is only 30%. The high school also pushes New Tech severely. New tech is a form of learning where all work is done as group projects. That literally sounds like every child's nightmare. If you fail one class in new tech, you automatically fail two because the subjects are "bound". They don't educate children on their many other educational programs. They offer Andrews University (math and science, very competitive), SMC and LMC (college level classes at the campus), and early college (take classes at LMC and SMC, graduate a year later than you should with a degree). Multiple students have said the school counselors lie to them about these programs, saying "you're not allowed to do that", even though they have every right to participate. They also tell students they're not allowed to test out of classes, even though Michigan legally allows students to test out of any class. Many parents have expressed concern about this.

All my children…read moreattend this school and beyond the hands-on learning of the Montessori method, this school instills a joy and love of learning that I am grateful for every single day. They believe in purposeful, engaged learning and to that end the children spend half a day every week on a local farm. They have a wonderful faith based component that encourages an individual exploration of faith. And having volunteered on a weekly basis i can say why absolute certainty this school can work wonders on children who struggle in other environments. It's not cheap but it's worth very penny and the school works hard to support families with more need. I would absolutely encourage you to learn more about the method itself but also this school.

Came here with the USC band to rehearse on their field…read more Located in South Bend, Saint Joseph HS is a very beautiful school. We watched a peewee football game for a bit before we were granted access. The school is gorgeous on the outside, and the field is very well-kept. Turf field, with a nice press box, big concessions stand, and very clean bathrooms. Can't say much about anything else, but I wouldn't mind teaching here.

Mathnasium has helped my son, and our family, so much. Math homework nights used to be really hard…read moreon all of us. He didn't understand the work, I tried, but often wasn't able to help him partly because I wasn't taught his way and also because he developed a mental block because he grew to dislike math so much. After our initial assessment at Mathnasium I knew someone like a peer tutor wasn't going to be able to help him either. We found that there were gaps in his math skills that were a year or two behind his current placement. A tutor would have likely helped with homework, but he still would have had those gaps. Since starting at Mathnasium 2 months ago my son's confidence has grown, his nervousness about going to school on math days has ended, and he is starting to open up more about his struggles. We are able to have converstaions about math instead of fights about it. He got in the car after a recent session at Mathnasium and said, "that feels so good to finally understand that." He was afraid to ask for help before because he didn't want to look 'dumb' in front of the other students in his high school honors class. I really cannot say enough about the caring staff and just what a relief it is to have that stress off of our family, but mostly to have my son happier again.

A dear friend joined my husband and me for classes and we all had a blast making useful and fun items. Out friend, John, liked the table work better so made the coolest items from clay slabs. A beer mug for himself, a gorgeous plant pot for his mother and several items for his wife (gifts!) and others. Amazing! My husband and I used the wheel, so we made several plant pots, coffee mugs, dishes and other useful items. It is so rewarding to use your hands to watch something come to life. It was a blast and we walked away with handmade forever treasures. Do yourself a favor. Go check this place out!

Indiana University South Bend is part of the Indiana University system…read more The university started out as a place where "non traditional" students went to school at night while still maintaining a full time job to further their careers. However, with the cost of tuition rising and parents unable to help out, many more traditional students are choosing IUSB for their education. This is seen by the number of building projects over the last 10 years. New classroom buildings have been erected, a student center built and land purchased for the building of dorms. IUSB lives in the shadow of it's more well-known neighbor, University of Notre Dame but has some features which the larger and much more pricey universities do not. Class sizes are small. At state run schools, it is not uncommon to have 100s of students in your introductory classes. This is not the case at IUSB. Even these 100 level mandatory classes are small with about 30-40 students in a class. By the time you have reached your 300 level classes, there are usually less than 10 people in your classes. This makes for excellent student - teacher relationships. The faculty at IUSB is nothing to laugh at either. They have been recognized around the world for their research and teaching abilities. Many of them could be other places but choose to stay at IUSB because of the atmosphere and relationship with students. Worried about further education? Undergraduates in all fields usually have the opportunity to work closely with a professor on a research project if they choose. They have gone to prestigious graduate schools, law schools and medical schools. There is a graduate program too. Another good thing -- if you decide to get out of town, IUSB is the IU system so ALL of your credits transfer!!

Once you taken classes at iusb your way of thinking expands. The campus has a lot of different clubs and organizations the students can participate in making their college experience more engaging. The professors are extremely knowledgeable and promote the students in higher order thinking about different aspects to life. Iusb has some cute cafes and a grill that serves decent food for students and a Starbucks. The campus is easy to navigate and the faculty are very helpful to students.
