Budget friendly, but extremely low quality. The management was very pleasant, but the actual experience was below 1 star. Sorry. I'll try to sum this up without sounding too derogatory. There was an odor that hit me in the face upon entry. It only intensified and got worse as I made my way into the bathroom, which reeked of cigarette smoke. The hardwood floor was filthy, so I wasn't comfortable walking around in socks or bare feet. There were no coffee makers inside of the rooms, and the one that was located in the office was broken. There's no lighting above the desk. The top rocker switch located at the vanity was broken. The only redeeming quality is the staff, as they were pleasant and replaced the towels and changed out the garbage bags when I was gone for the day. Obviously, the cleaning crew could use some help. Stay at this motel while the prices are still low. They could easily charge more. From the tall, heavy-duty glass doors, to the beautifully backlit mirrors, this motel is adding upgrades that make for a cozy and modern stay. You cannot beat the price. I am a local who stayed here for use of the shower, as our well water is acting up. It was exactly what I needed. A warm room with clean water. If you need a place to stay while you're out and about and visiting Auburn, I highly recommend this motel. So like you should be doing I got on yelp to check out the area!! lol!! So I found this place that had decent reviews and they have to say it was clean not pricey for one night and nice people that own it!!! THE PICTURES ON HERE ARE OLD!!! The motel has been renovated after a new owner purchased and upgraded. The new owner upgraded the management as well. Kristy is the new manager and her customer service skills are absolutely amazing. Kristy welcomed us with a warmth I have only felt staying at family or friends. Kristy went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. I will not stay in any other motel after this great experience. This place is near gas stations and near highway so that's why I gave it an extra star, but I really disliked the fact that they don't tell you the following until you get to the motel , they ask for a card to put on hold and they ask for a 40$ deposit for key that HAS to be cash,what if I didn't have cash!? So the best part of this motel is the price. Everything else is terrible! You go to check in, into a outdated sketchy looking front desk. The front desk people where not friendly! It was weird, it takes an unusually long time to check in as I'm sure their systems are out dated. The pictures are doctored big time! I expected so much more from the pictures online. Talk about putting lipstick on a pig! After the weird check in experience. We walk up to our room open the door and it was like a sauna in there. Someone maid or otherwise had the heater on full blast! The rooms are extremely basic! The bed moved when u sat down there was blood spots on the wall by our bed that I washed off before my boyfriend who was already disappointed saw it. I was disgusted but we already prepaid and we're an hour away from home so we made due! The room looked like it was attempted to be upgraded, u can tell it was poorly done. No in room coffee machine and the walls are very thin u could hear everything everyone was doing! The ac did not work! The shower was wet when we got there and the towels smelt like they were left from the last person, there was even a hair on the hand towel! Also the beds have bed bugs I recommend checking your mattress yourself before sleeping here and to top it off the motel is just horrible lots of crazy people staying here. Where do I start?? With the owner of this establishment. Is this not land of building codes and safety inspectors?? How this hotel is permitted to house people is beyond me!! The mini fridge is powered from this pipe sticking out of the middle of the floor, with one black and one white wire, that leads to an outlet that just hangs about. Never restocked with tp, and I just found out that noamimals are allowed. I have a service dog that weighs 20 lbs. but I'll keep her out of sight cause I couldn't bare that conversation! As always, consider the one star reviews as entertainment only. We had two adults and a teen in a room with two queen beds. Newly remodeled, beds were comfy with TV, a fridge and a microwave. Room as it was set up was a little spartan but do you really need motel art on the walls? Location is great-minutes off of I-80, walking distance to downtown and a minimart and a breakfast restaurant right across the street. The only redeming atribute my room had was a tv that was ok and a microwave that worked and was clean. If you stay here bring booze and mind altering substances. You'll want to do anything you can to forget where you are. No wifi. (Not surprising) Furniture that looks like it came freom a demolished hilton. Carpet that looks like it was new in 1981. A desk staff that will quote you a low price over the phone and then try and tack an additional $20 on the room price when you show up. No fan or or window in the bathroom (which is illegal). I have lived in Auburn my whole life and I am very aware of the reputation of the Elmwood Motel. But having recently stayed there I must say that I was genuinely surprised of the new management. Whereas the old management was quite creepy and very sketchy at times the new management is very friendly great people to talk to. They're currently in the middle of remodeling but what they plan to do looks gorgeous if you have stayed there in the past and you didn't find it very appealing I would suggest giving it another try. And on a personal note the owners and the management have been very accommodating to my family we have been on hard times and they have looked out for us and helped when they had no reason to help us than other than just being good people. So right now it might not be the most beautifulest Motel Ever but if you like supporting good people who help other people this is probably where you should go. Plus on a side note, I go to lots of hotels who claimed to have high speed internet, usually I tested and it's about 9 megabytes per second. NIGHTMARE FROM HELL!!!!!! [[GO ANYWHERE ELSE BUT HERE!! THE STREETS WOULD BE BETTER!]] This location does not even deserve ONE star... LOOOONG (night&) Story short: My family was in town for the funeral of a relative,we wanted something affordable, but descent because we had 4 rooms to purchase for the night, and my dad was paying for all the rooms. (Keep in mind this was back in 2010 before review websites became mainstream, so we were taking our chances) My husband and I had to change rooms multiple times because the plumbing was so jacked up. Upon arrival I could not wait to take a shower to refresh after a long drive. I was in the bathroom completely naked, ready to jump in, with all of my clean/dirty clothing, bathroom supplies throughout the TINY grose shower area when I realized the water was not draining. HOW INCONVENIENT. So I have to stop the water, throw some clothes on, and call the front desk. As if it were an inconvenience to HIM, he comes in as if we've 'put him out' ...he arrives with a PLUNGER at hand and starts PLUNGING away at the drain..."OK" that may be a quick plumbing fix and terribly DISGUSTING, however as he's doing this, I realize how DARK green (almost black) the tile shower room is, and how it would be impossible to see if it was actually clean for guests, so im thinking to myself...this shower is probably NEVER cleaned in between guests, because no one would even know....Being frustrated, I kindly demanded a new room after the PLUNGER experience as well as being sickened with the idea of that shower not having been treated with disinfectant for who knows long. So the next room we got transferred to - the bathroom is straight up TRASHY looking, TINY and OLD/Ratty/Rotted As FK, but I dont want to seem UPPIDY on everyone, so I just deal and get showered up...The TOWELS were so grose!!!....they were ROUGH just looking at them, and they'd scrape you when you dried off with them. I noticed that they were previous 'paint rags' from some hotel project that have been set there for our showering pleasure. WORRIED about bed bugs, I went and swiped fresh sheets (classy I know) from another local hotel chain at the front desk. I had to get out of that roach motel so my little brother and sister and I drove around town being goofy and having fun together. Later in the evening, some family (Auburn locals) that we had not seen in 15 years stopped by the ELMWOOD to see us (they must have thought we were DIRT POOR staying here, what a great first impression for those of us that had never met) So anyways about 7 people come upstairs to say hello, meanwhile we have about 7 people of our own upstairs. With all of the weight SCATTERED between about 10 rooms across (our rooms were a little spread) the BALCONY LOOKED and FELT LIKE IT WAS READY TO BREAK/CRASH DOWN!!! LITERALLY!!!! COME ON NOW!??!? Someone needs to send a building inspector out there because the maximum weight capacity should allow for people to stand on their balcony!!! It was so old and grimy...and creaky....finally the next morning, I was so glad to get the HELL OUT OF THERE....my towels in my 'new room' were SO DISGUSTINGLY..ROUGH....and most of all.....NOT...regular towel sizes...they were all the size would go onto the floor that you step on when getting out of the shower. So Im kindly telling the foreign guy...I need a towel as he's walking past me .... and he goes..."EYYYEE EM NOT GEEEVING YOU A TOWEL!! ONLEEEE WON ONLYYY!!!!! SCREAMING AT ME!!! LOL WTF!?!???!! OH MY GOD I JUST WANTED TO FREAKIN SHOWER AND GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!!! LOL FED UP WITH HIS B/S I FREAKIN GRRRRRRABBED A TOWEL STRAIGHT OUT OF HIS FRRRRRRREAKIN HANDS....AND VERY QUICKLY WENT INTO MY ROOM - SLAMMED THE DOOR AND WENT TO SHOWER (This man was SO RUDE the entire time). HE THREATENED TO CALL THE COPS AND WHEN THE WORD COPS WAS MENTIONED....A PAROLEE CAME RUNNING OUTSIDE WITH HIS ANKLE MONITOR ON(!!) SAYING DON'T CALL THE COPS!!! We got snowed on while camping at a music festival in Soda Springs and I had only packed a flannel shirt and sandals so we bailed out and came down the hill to Auburn and needed a place to stay. The worst place I've ever been! Me and a couple of friends were heading to South Tahoe when we decided to stay the night in Auburn. We google'd Motels and then a wild Elmwood appears. The name sounds good, so we thought it would be a good idea to sleep there. When we got inside the room the nightmare began, what a stinky place, everything seemed so 70's, that room probably was kept closed for at least 6 months. I'd rather sleep on the streets than face that bed again, that pillow omg, take that away from me! One of the windows was stucked and wouldn't close, so we slept with a cold wind coming from outside, with NO BLANKETS available . The pillow case smelled like someone sweated all the night and they couldn't even bother to change it. In the middle of the night a 2 inches wide spider showed up, and scared the hell out of us, I'm not kidding, that being must hve been the only satisfied guest this motel ever had! The water that comes from the sink had a smooth white color, me and my friends didn't have the guts to face this chernobyl water, we used bottled water to brush our teeth. Of course we didn't take a shower. And the last but not the least, this place was so noisy that whenever a truck or any vehicle passed by, it sounded like it was inside our room. Well, we survived Elmhood, I think Central Africa is no big deal from now. I lived in Brazil for more than 20 years, and I swear for god, I never seen anything as bad as Elmwood motel, a haunted house would be more pleasant to stay than there.
