Never knew what went into making porcelain but I now have a HUGE appreciation!…read more
Meissen Porcelain is world-renowned for being the 1st porcelain maker in the western world, to have cracked the code on the Chinese porcelain techniques and perfected the quality for the western world
Visiting this modest-on-the-outside establishment holds a wondrous world of craftsmanship on the inside. I would recommend taking the tour AND seeing the museum but allow at least double the amount of the time you were planning, because there is SO MUCH to see!
We got earphones that pumped in an English overview of the German tour so everyone can take tours at the same time. Started out with an overview of porcelain making and how it came to Germany then we saw the actual artistry - as we entered each room, experts in that particular field of porcelain making would come in & work on their assigned piece......it takes years to master a task & these people made it look easy as pie!
Taking the initial ingredients to the painstakingly hand-painted and glazing process, I could see why Meissen was so precious and sought after
They also had a couple of different "gift shops" - 1 for their newest collections and another outlet-type of shop, where you can find discounted items
Plates, bowls, tea services, figurines & everything you can think of.....if it's made by Meissen, you can find it here. Must stop and a destination visit for sure!!
