I`ve been traveling to Ely on and off for the last 20 years and have stayed here and there around town, but decided to try to save a few bucks and stay at Rustin Inn last time. I thought perhaps this was a diamond in the rough. Maybe I have high standards when it comes to a place being "clean". I don`t know. Let's just do a pros and cons list to make this easy. Pros: -Cheap. I paid $55 for a night -Location was on the main road, so it felt relatively safe -Hot shower -Nice owner -Parking right outside your room Cons: -When I arrived, no one was in the office, which is totally fine, but there was a note on the door that had guest names and the rooms they were staying in(directing them to the room number). I don`t love a note with the room I`m staying in to be available for anyone to view -There is a difference between rustic and dingy. I had room 14 and it was okay, definitely had seen better days. My issue was with the cleanliness. The sheets were formerly white but now were a tan color from wear. The pillows were flat and the actual pillows had stains on them. Pillow covers were the same worn color of the sheets. I slept in my hoodie because I didn`t want to lay on the pillows. Random hair(not mine) in the shower and a less than pristine toilet. I know, I know. This is a cheap motel. The front office looks so cute with the lights and homey feel. The motel has a lot of potential, but it needs repair, updated items, and a deep clean. I`ll pass on this place in the future. For $20 you can stay elsewhere that will be cleaner and more comfortable.

I started outside--the woman explained I could do it either of two ways--so I chose outdoors first. I was amazed when I saw an 1870s Keystone well drill. My father was a water well driller in Pennsylvania and I grew up around this kind of equipment, but I never knew that there was one that was made a lot from wood. I don't think I would have been as comfortable climbing that derrick as I was with the metal rungs I had to climb. There are Nevada Northern railroad cars, the former depot for Ely, a one room schoolhouse and so much more. The schoolhouse was interesting for me. I can't imagine teaching 10-15 kids in one room that might be 7 or 8 different years in age. Inside, there are geological items, a section of old medicine bottles, Shoshone items, and the recreation of a giant short-faced Nevada bear. I didn't even know such an animal existed. A good stop. A plus was the woman told me the McGill Drugstore was open and she gave me the hours.

White pine museum has all the local flair from trains, local lifestyle, fashion through the years, ranching equipment to mining culture. The coolest thing was the fancy women hat collection from the local women gangs that gathered together at the local parks to gossip on how to rule the world (sarcasm peoples). Must see if your ever in the area. Access/Roads: A On main drag. Paved and clean. Parking: A Plenty street parking. Distance: B Las Vegas, NV is appx 200 miles south. Salt lake City appx 200 miles northeast. Ely is a small, desolate mining town. Costs: A $10 per. Being next to the road the town does not roll up the sidewalk at night and there is a constant stream of traffic noise. The rooms were not up to the standard that they had been previously. No one was in the motel front office, you had to walk over to the store to check in with one guy running both. The price has also almost doubled from what it used to be and in my opinion definetly not worth it. My family and I used to stay here all the time during hunting seasons for almost 30 years. Was a warm environment and made you feel like family. It was always clean, accommodating and a comfortable place to stay. I'm very disappointed in the downgrade this place has seen. Very sad.

Now there's only a small tire repair garage and an area to park RVs or tent camp on the grass with an adjacent covered picnic area with a BBQ grill. The accommodation price is right and there is a small laundry room, flush toilet, and a hot shower in a heated building. Come prepared as there are no stores or anything if you run out of supplies. Call first to set up accommodations as this is a long way to drive and be disappointed if space is unavailable. Locals are friendly and can talk for hours about the local happenings. Downside is the highway traffic can be noisy at night but you get used to it.
