I kept logging every meal and reporting back, only to be told to eat fewer carbs and move more. I'd feel guilty when I didn't have the "perfect" week. This approach never lasted beyond my appointments, and I'd eventually stop seeing them altogether. I even met with an endocrinologist and did several lab tests. I was convinced that something was wrong with me -- that I was broken. I considered myself someone who knew exactly what to do. By this point, I had a decent understanding of what to eat (and not to eat), how much, and so on. Between years of meeting with doctors and the endless information online about weight loss -- calorie counting, macros, weight-lifting, and trends like intermittent fasting or low-carb diets -- I thought I had it all figured out. But in June, I was the heaviest I'd ever been, with no signs of change, despite my vigilance at home. And truthfully, living that way wasn't realistic... at all. AMAZING!!! This…read moreplace is actually fantastic and Dr. Melanie Carminati is a neighborhood gem. Melanie moved her office to Park Slope this summer from Carrol Gardens. I came here after a terrible experience at another place and I am so grateful they are now in the neighborhood. The entire process from start-to-finish was seamless and professional. The office staff helped me get an appointment earlier than normal because I was post-op (I had just undergone surgery for a fractured humerus/elbow) and this healing time is crucial. Most other places in the neighborhood wouldn't book me for another month and Inspira got me in the following week. I received all forms via email: intake forms, detailed instructions on how to work with insurance, and an electronic invoice. This was great, because it meant I could be taken immediately when I arrived for my appointment without waiting or sitting in a waiting room filling out annoying forms. I was immediately greeted by Melanie after checking in. She led me to the back where she sees patients in a private room. I was happy to see this, because PT can be nerve-wracking and I wasn't sure how much pain I was about to experience. It was also nice to get her full attention. Right off the bat, she started explaining everything to me from a medical perspective in great detail. She explained how the body works, that the elbow and other joints have capsules surrounding them, how the connective tissue works, etc. She also explained that we will need to work on my neck, shoulder, and elbow, because they would have all been affected as a result of the accident. This additional information about the process really helped me ease my nerves. The treatment was extremely gentle and thorough. The entire time, Melanie communicated to me what was going on and why she was doing certain things. She alternated between gently massaging my arm and stretching over an extended period of time instead of forcing my arm open over a short period of time. The stretches hurt, but her method of therapy made it so that it was bearable. I walked in with a 40 degree angle in my left arm and she got me all the way to 25! Her bedside manner is also as calm and gentle as you can possibly get. She gave me several exercises to do at home and helped me schedule me for appointments for the next few weeks to ensure that I get the treatment I need during this crucial time. I am coming back tomorrow. I highly highly recommend coming here. Dr. Melanie is extremely kind, intelligent, helpful, and skilled at what she does. I had a hard time getting an appointment in the neighborhood at some of the more well-known places, but I am glad I came here. This place is as good as it gets.

And that's an important distinction. The level of fat-phobia and misogyny I've had to navigate in past physical therapy environments is truly oppressive and detrimental to my health. But dancers are trained to see lines in the body. They tell me when my hips are 1 mm off, small impactful adjustments to my positioning that most physical therapist don't see buried beneath the fat. I've been doing physical therapy and private Pilates physical therapy here for the last six months. When I started, I was experiencing suicidal ideation's due to unmanageable chronic pain. Cranial sacral therapy had an instant effect on the way I was experiencing my pain and my ideations greatly lessened. The communication between therapists is so on point, all of my sessions, feel seamless between therapists, they all know exactly where I'm at and what I did in each session. That's a level of being seen I have never experienced in my life. ***** They do not take insurance.***** This is not their fault. It feels like all of the medical care that has actually had a positive impact on my chronic illnesses and disabilities are not covered by insurance. I am going to try a few fancy insurances, to see if they will reimburse some of what I'm spending. If I had one wish for the space is that I wish they could offer sliding scale to people in need.

But I threw out my back & I've had it with the steroid injections & bs. So I spoiled myself. They just reopened on Willoughby in Bushwick and oh my lanta!!!! It's a much more intimate space than they had 10 years ago, when you go for the community option I think there's only three beds now. Not only does the bed heat up, but the wonderful Dr Patchi put a heating lamp on my back for my cramps. LUXURY I swear this was a spa like experience! Patchi is super warm & chill, and SO intuitive with her hands. She also used a tens unit which I completely love. She is so so so skilled, and that excellent skill is overshadowed in the best way by her warmth. When we were done I slowly sat up and stretched my back a bit, and felt pops where I've been really needing to feel pops! She also did some needling for an ankle I broke last year that I'm still healing, and I'm really impressed by how much that worked. Of course it isn't magic, I still have cramps and my back is still rough, but both are much much much more manageable after just one session. I was tipped off to a pay what you can day coming up soon, and I really really really appreciated that (& immediately booked a spot). Being broke sucks, this economy sucks, looking for a job sucks, and it sucks even more when you feel like you're being judged for not having much money (esp since Bushwick is turning snooty). That tip was such a compassionate move, and it's so kind that they're having to pay what you can day!!!
