I was visiting from out of state and clearly should've known better. Quite a number of students were ill mannered, disrespectful to each other and supervisors. Students were in the restroom talking negatively about the school and the directors. They were also negatively speaking about them when the directors would pass them. I should've left then. Some of the students were playing with the receptionist and having loud personal conversations up front. I should've left. The music was inappropriate. It was hard rap with XXX mature lyrics that should never be played anywhere but a strip club, but never in a place of business. I should've left. The student who was supposed to do my hair was Caucasian. She got offended when I asked if she was comfortable working with my African texture of hair. (Simple question with a yes or no answer.) She barely shampooed my Afro and didn't know how to do a simple two strand twist. (She wanted to put gel all over my hair first. Then, twist it in two strands like Celie from The Color Purple. ) I said absolutely not and asked for another person. Again...I should've left. Fortunately, another student came to the rescue and made a decent effort. This student was also Caucasian, but was clearly more comfortable with my hair and was familiar with a simple two strand twist, (although the parts were about 1-2" wide.... Have I mentioned Celie?). Eventually the directors got a clue and had a melanated student fix my hair and finish so I could leave. I left and came back with a substantial tip for that student fixing what she could before closed, and I left ASAP, heading to a well earned massage appointment. When I left, the police were sitting in the parking lot. I did not feel safe in shopping center. I was glad I had my trained security dog in the car and my personal concealed security means. I would never return or recommend this place to anyone. I had to redo half my hair when I got back to my hotel. read more

I just had one of the best experiences with getting my hair done and pampering myself in general. I've come to Empire three or four times and only one time have I walked out not completely satisfied. But I obviously have to take into account that I'm paying a fraction of the cost to get services done and these are all students learning how to do things on their own practically so there's going to be room for error. Today was fantastic! I got to shadow roots done by one of the gals there. She was extremely thorough and made sure to ask me multiple times what exactly I wanted done. She looked at the pictures I had with me multiple times. She consulted multiple individuals just to make sure she was on the right path which was very refreshing and reassuring. One of the gals at the front desk Wanda I believe was extremely friendly welcoming and helpful all at once. The entire time you see a real school environment with people learning, talking with each other, and joking around which makes the atmosphere feel very down to earth. While I was there a few of the girls needed last minute credits so I got a manicure my eyebrows and my upper lip waxed for free. That's freaking insane! I was so happy and felt like 1 million bucks when I left. Today I got an amazing hair dye done my eyebrows and upper lip or hair free and my nails are looking fantastic thanks to Empire beauty school. 10/10 would recommend. Just keep in mind these people are in school learning so you may not always have a spot on experience but at that same time you won't always have the same experience when you come. The only sad part is these people do graduate and once you find someone you like you have to follow them to wherever they go to work or start with someone brand new. read more

The products are good and I had a senior student. She knows her products. I wasn't impressed with the front staff. No general greeting, just what service are you getting. After checking in I waited exactly 34 minutes for someone to come from the back. And no one was there. I suggest going on a day when you can schedule an appointment. But, once the service started it went by. If you're sensitive to noise this is not the place for you. The girls are loud discussing their day to day activities. I'm only going back for the low price. This is coming from a person who attended Empire and graduated. The school itself is ok, the classrooms are a bit small however and the salon floor is pretty crammed. The educators are not too bright, and I basically taught myself most of the material. The pre-salon educator I had was threatened by anyone who was smarter than her and was incredibly passive aggressive, to the point where she'd pick you to be part of her demonstration just to mess you up! She glued my eyelids shut while applying fake lashes and got someone she knew couldn't do it correctly to wax my eyebrows, taking half of my left one clean off. The upper level educators are slightly better but very insistent on you doing something exactly the way they taught, leaving little room for creative freedom. The salon floor is definitely good experience, but they make you take anyone that comes in, even if it's braids and extensions (which we're not being taught to do.) The head of the school (who's been fired since my graduation) was a complete nightmare, she'd pull every student into the back classroom to berate and insult us, to the point where some students were in tears. Also, if you plan on attending, make sure you get all the work that's required done in the amount of time allotted, it's very hard to complete school if you're over your time or if you finish the work to quickly, they'll force you to stay back for extra weeks. Overall, I'm only giving the school two stars because I did graduate and get my license, but that's about it. I've had to retract myself everything because of how poorly they educate. I'd try to find a school where they actually care and want to teach. read more

These people are a bunch of bums. I've been going to this location for a year now. Three years prior I went to a different location of empire in a different state period I always got great service from them none of these crazy customer service issues that go on here in Savannah. I used to schedule appointments at this location here in Savannah. However, every time I showed up I still had to wait at least 30 minutes for a stylist. So I started just walking in without an appointment. Which for the past six month has worked the best for me. I still wait 30 minutes sometimes just 15 for a stylist. But, my expectation is much lower when I don't have an appointment. On this particular occasion last week I went with my mother whom has never been to Empire. All I wanted was a shampoo and flat iron. My mother was going to get a trim, shampoo, and color. We walked in and were greeted by the receptionist at the front desk. At that time I asked what is the wait time I was told it would be an hour. In the past they have told customers who are walking in when there is more than a 30 minute wait time to put their name on the list and come back in 30 to 45 minutes. I asked her if that's what I should do, I was told no that they would be moving fast today and sometimes people don't show up to appointments and she didn't want me to lose my spot. I said okay my mother and I signed our names on the list. We had food so we went to the back area at our food which took about 30 to 40 minutes. Once we finished our food we came up to the front to see how much longer we'll be waiting, not much had changed. At that time it really wasn't that big of a deal so we continue to wait. After waiting an hour and a half I asked if we would be seen soon and where we were on the list. I was told we were next Period so during that time many of the students went to lunch other appointments came in the door. My mother and I were not made aware that we were the next person on the walk-in list but not the actual next person to be waited on so we round up waiting another hour period by the time my name was called I had been waiting two and a half hours. By that time I was Furious. I am very dissatisfied with the low level of information that I was given when I asked very specific questions each time that I spoke with the receptionist. I asked her 3 times when would be seen. I understand that we did not have an appointment, we anticipated having to wait. however, if we would have known it was going to be two and a half hours we could have a left and come back or made other arrangements. At that time I was 39 weeks pregnant and I am not able to sit for 4 hours at a time I was pushing it by sitting the two and a half hours that I did wait. So once they called my name I told them I was not going to receive any services and that they could just go ahead and do my mother's hair. I was not going to be able to sit for another 2 hours while they actually perform the hair service. We showed up at that salon at 10:15 in the morning and my mother did not leave until 3:30 p.m. period that is a ridiculous amount of time to spend in a salon. Especially on a Thursday. During that time another customer came into the Salon with a one o'clock appointment with a specific stylist. The receptionist told her that her stylist had to other clients that she was still working on and have yet to take a lunch so she would need to reschedule or have someone else complete the style for her. The customer was upset she left. This was total and consideration for this lady's time she was disabled she got out of her car in a walker. I'm sure it is very hard for her to get around and this is very very inconvenient to have her with an appointment and tell her that her style is is not prepared to do her hair. This place is unprofessional and I see this stuff go on and on all the time. I have address this with the executive director at this location. She has made all kind of excuses. Nothing has changed period we students are unprofessional they don't have knowledgeable people working the front desk. They can't answer simple questions and I just can't go there anymore. My time is too valuable, they don't value people who actually have appointments. So I quit wasting my time making appointments in an effort to just walk in but walking in now has been troublesome. So now I just won't go there anymore. read more

The people here don't really know what they're doing. I had an appointment and still waited 30-40 minutes to be seen. I only wanted a haircut. I keep it simple. I like to get a dry cut because I have wavy hair and it looks better if the waves are there when cut plus my hair when wet is hard to manage. They refused to give me a dry cut even though I explained why I'd prefer it done that way. It would have taken less time too, since they wasted 40 minutes making me wait even though I had an appointment. But they insisted that I get my hair washed. It then took almost 2 hours for a haircut that should have taken 30 minutes. I went in for a haircut, and kept my request simple. I wanted the long layers. When the woman cutting my hair asked the instructor what the best way to cut long layers was, I thought 'ok, at least she asked before cutting.' Afterwards I come home and my hair has been ruined! It's looks uneven everywhere! And it's shorter than I wanted. I don't know what to do, except tie it up and let it grow out so that I can get a trim somewhere else. Dont go here if you love your curls. The girl destroyed my curl pattern she claimed she put a heat protectant in my hair but had her flat iron on 450. My friends think she was intimidated by my hair and slipped a relaxer in the shampoo. What ever it was its not worth it. Spend 60 dollars somewhere with competent people. You really get what you pay for here. On top of that we waited for an hour after out appointment to be seen. The girl was not even there and we got there 20 min early.
