So this is my first food review and I figured I should come on here and be completely honest about my experience...I ordered takeout for sesame chicken w/ white rice. I wish it tasted as good as it smelled and looked.....I was so disappointed because I was so excited to eat it and 75% of my chicken was over cooked by how gritty and hard as a rock it was to chew through. Today was my 75th birthday. To celebrate my husband and son drove 25 miles to get carry-out. I had always said of all the Chinese restaurants I had ever eaten at, Empress was my favorite. After my dinner tonight I won't say that again. I had the mu shu pork which should have called mu shu cabbage. Since that's what it mostly was. What pork there was was fatty and slimy. My son had Mongolian pork and it was mostly fatty too. The cabbage was tasty but sliced in big pieces which made it hard to roll up. My husband's orange beef was the only thing worth eating and some of the beef wasn't as good as it used to be 2 years ago. Very disappointing. Sorry I didn't choose Key West Shrimp House. Very Solid Chinese fair. I am partial to sesame anything here, especially the beef. Great egg rolls and wontons. We order about once or twice a month, usually in a fit of what's for dinner ... Best Chinese food in this area! The restaurant owner is extremely nice to customers. I have been there many times and always enjoyed their service. Their sizzling rice soup is so great that i always order. Also you can taste that they use very fresh ingredients in their foods (shrimps are big!). If you can speak Chinese or knows Chinese dish name- talk to the owner directly and they may be able to prepare for u. Their Ma Po Tou fu is the best i have had in the country! The best Chinese food in Madison and competes with big city Chinese restaurants. This is quality delicious Chinese cuisine prepared consistently and properly. They use fresh ingredients in their dishes with homemade sauces. They will also adjust the spiciness of the spicy dishes to your request. Potstickers are great, the mu shu is the real deal, handmade lo mein noodles, stir fried tofu, sesame chicken are my go to dishes. Think I'm heading there for lunch now! Cool to find a nice family sit down American Chinese restaurant in Madison. My litmus test for Chinese restaurants is how they cook their fried rice. Is it the frozen bright yellow stuff, or did they actually take the time to fry white rice in a wok? This place did it right. So while this may be the best choice for fake mainland Chinese food, it doesn't mean it's good. One time my roommate found a cockroach in her food. They didn't blink an eye, they just replaced the dish. Never apologized nor comp-ed it. Just replaced it. Probably just shoved it off the plate and gave it back to her. At the very least, comp the meal! The only reason for the one star? Because you can't give any less and because they made me pork eggplant. It's not on the menu but if you ask, they'll make it. Hate to disagree with all of these 4 and 5 star reviews, but I did not have a good experience here. Maybe they were off their game. Ordered Sesame chicken which looked to be batter dipped - way too much breading. The chicken had cartilage and gristle - could not eat several pieces. Fried rice was nothing special. A member of our party had tofu Pad Thai - the noodles were big and flat, and the dish greasy. The wait staff was overwhelmed at 60% capacity and everything was slow - seating, service, payment. The only thing that I thought was solid was the Wonton soup. Just not a good experience. read more

This is undoubtedly the best Chinese food available in the Madison/Hanover area. I love the Sesame Shrimp, which is not actually on the dinner menu, but they don't blink twice if you ask for it. Sweet and Sour Shrimp (or Pork) also delicious. A number of tasty vegetarian options as well. Surprisingly good. read more

Potstickers are great. Wontons are hard and bland. The orange chicken was ok and bourbon chicken was ok but the empress chicken was great. Big portions and chicken fried rice is very good. Egg drop soup was not good so pass on it. Service was good for only having one person waiting all the tables. read more

The absolute best Chinese place in Madison! They give you big portions and the price is reasonable. They could probably update the seating a bit, as the chairs are starting to get a bit creaky, but I'm more than willing to deal with a creaky chair for the food! read more

We stumbled upon them after a different restaurant was closed. When we walked in they greeted us with a smile, and played with our kids. The service was fast. My bf asked for a cherry coke. We later found out that it wasn't on the menu. They made a cherry coke just for him using real maraschino cherries. Which by the way was much better than regular cherry coke. It had a cute little monkey cherry holder. It was in the middle of the day and we were the only customers. Our server sat at the next table and we had a wonderful conversation. We talked for over an hour. They just got a kick out of my bashful daughter. The man took the plastic monkey and danced it along her high chair and made monkey sounds to make her laugh. We are vegetarians and were happy with our selection. My bf knows I love hot and sour soup, so he suggested it. But I saw it had pork in it. So I told my bf I couldn't get it. The man heard and told me they would make a bowl without it for us. And I'm glad we ordered it. It was the best I've had in over 9 yrs since I moved form Texas. It all was though. I have gotten used to the Americanized Chinese food around here. It's nothing no walk into a local china buffet and see tater tots, pizza, and chicken nuggets. Not to mention that terrible corn blob deep fried thing. So we were so glad to find real flavor. I really liked that the veggies weren't cooked to death. They still had some crunch to them. This is by far the best chinese restaurant in Madison and probably the surrounding towns. The atmosphere is great and the owners are very nice people. You can order off of the menu or request special dishes. If they can make it and they have the ingredients, I'm sure they can make it as good as anyone. read more
