Basically its a second hand bookstore, and unlike most of the…read moremodern book stores, its feels like and old fashioned book sellers, and even has the smell of an old fashioned book store too. There are plenty of books on display - so many that you may find it difficult to find anything you're specifically searching for, and many of the titles are the older titles. While there are some more modern (ie - published in the last ten years or so) titles on offer, the majority are older. There are both literature and reference books on sale, in varying degrees of condition from good to just about acceptable. In addition to this, there are also a range of comic books and old magazines (a wide range of titles such as murder casebook for example, if thats your thing) and they offer a title search service to help you find a specific title which they might not have in stock. On the downside, it usually looks a little untidy in there with piles of books on the floor. The big 2nd hand places in London and so on look much tidier, and quite a few of the books on sale are expensive to say they arent of any real value and in sometimes poor condition, but its worth a look if you're in search of something specific or even just browsing for a casual read.

We'd walked past the Whitby Bookshop many times but only recently gone in to be amazed by the…read moreselection of books. Its spread over two floors, with a spiral staircase leading to the second floor, its really old worlde in there and has such a charm. It has a good range in local history books, and quite a lot of gothic/horror books which is always nice to see. If you want gifts for people then I can recommend some of the pretty notebooks sold here and unusual cards. We've only spent a short time in here but you could easily browse for hours, and its worth looking out for events as they tend to have author signing events which are good fun and you get to pick up a signed book.

And yes, that's a positive take on the famous "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate" of Dante's Inferno, for this place represents, in its entirety, the opposite to the Inferno's loss of hope. The Minster Gate Bookshop is a palace of wisdom, an oasis of knowledge, a refuge of hope and peace. When you walk up the stairs and see every single wall covered in the most magnificent old and modern tomes, you can't help but feel total and complete bliss. The selection of books in all floors is impeccable. It could take me or you days just browsing every shelf. I stumbled upon it on a visit to the Minster of York, the main attraction in town, but on a second visit the York Minster will be relegated to a secondary level of importance. My first stop will undoubtedly be The Minster Gate Bookshop!

Having all at once the atmosphere of a bookshop, a museum, and an interesting relative's even more interesting house, the building provides a tranquil haven to become absorbed by fiction and history. The antiquarian volumes are breathtaking and cheaper editions can also be found for students stocking up for the new term. The History room is the loveliest, with an old desk and chair and battered old rug on the floorboards. The views out of the window are equally charming as the rooftops of the city reveal themselves like a Mary Poppins landscape.

I am based in the foundation stage and the stock of books on display by far exceed our needs. The business aims to provide schools with quality reading and research materials. The business has a very comprehensive web site to support its base in the Southlands centre. Staff are always very knowledgeable and are able to offer help with searching for that lost favourite book on their data base. Prices are as you expect when you are buying books but you do pay for quality. If you live in this area and are part of a school organisation I would highly recommend a visit to this school book specialist.

This is new. I didn't find bargain vintage delights. Rather expensive vintage delights. Very expensive vintage delights. You want £28 for a set of old cups? Oh right, I see. You're really vintage. Oooh. Oooooh. A new oooooh. You've got copies of The Face. I was never a cool enough early teen to be into The Face. I wish the face still existed. Oooooh. There's a copy here with The Strokes on the front. You want a fiver for it? Not a quid? Ah. Right. This place knows it has novelty value in Harrogate. And while it might spout about being an independent collective of vintage 'retailers', what would be a very enjoyable haberdashery of all nice, cute old things comes off feeling a bit too retail-based. We'll see how this one pans out.

The interesting bits you used to find in charity shops find a home here and the place does well. What's more the really knowledgeable guy who runs it is a great to spend some time with as he comes across a great deal more than can fit onto this Tardis-like shop. It's a wonderful place to browse in, but, as another reviewer said, don't expect charity shop prices as a lot of this stuff is now quite hard to find, and is priced accordingly.
