The grounds are lovely. The house is incredible for when it was built. It would make a great mansion in the 1930s but it was built fifty years earlier.

When built it was the most prominent house in Warwick County. It was used as aConfederate headquarters in April-May 1862. The basement contains an extensive exhibit on the 1862 Peninsula Campaign of the Civil War. The two furnished floors above are shown on the guided tour. Furnishings are arranged as they might have been in 1861. The bedrooms contain modern-looking closets. Our guide did his best to dispel the oft-repeated story that closets were taxed as though they were rooms (and that is why closets were uncommon). Lee Hall's bedrooms had them. The grounds contain a two-story brick outbuilding identified as the kitchen. It is not open and little was related about it or its configuration and use. Also on the grounds are the remains of Confederate earthworks. Troops camped one the property used it as a base to launch an observation balloon. After 1862, the Civil War largely bypassed the area and the house survived. The house was occupied into the late 20th century and divided into apartments for a time. The city of Newport News acquired it in 1996 and restored it. Definitely recommended for historic house enthusiasts.

We took the map and went to each site, read the plaques and paid our respect to those lost. The weather was perfect and everything was clearly labeled and well taken care of. We did however make the best of walking around the site and taking in all of the history we could on the grounds. We also observed a ceremony that was going on when we arrived at the Victory Monument and viewed various artillery pieces on the grounds. The town of Yorktown has lots of historic buildings and things to see and do. We enjoyed walking around and taking the trolley around this beautiful village.

Grace participates in a more formal / traditional style of worship by today's standards, but it is not formal in a stuffy and pompous way. Grace also seems to be positioned towards liberal bent and there is freedom for thought and spiritual exploration. I have been active in this church now for about 6 months and there is a deep sense of community and involvement within the church body. The calendar is full of activities and events. Moreover, there is a wide diversity of age and people of all backgrounds are embraced. The Rector, Carelton, and the associate Rector, Connie, are completely lovely people and they have exhibited genuine care for my family and I have seen their care for others on a consistent basis. What better way to spend a day than to take a road trip to quaint historic Yorktown! After we took…read morea stroll down the boardwalk, and enjoyed some time at the park, our next stop was visiting some colonial buildings. This famous brick house was built in the popular Georgian style of its day. The Nelson House was closed during Covid, but that didn't stop us from admiring the architectural beauty of the estate, the outbuildings, the unique fencing, the grounds and the lovely English gardens. Named for one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and a previous governor of Virginia, Thomas Nelson, Jr., the Nelson family home has a rich lineage. His grandfather built the house about 1730, and his father also occupied the house and was a prestigious politician in Yorktown. The Nelson family was influential in Virginia's history and the house stayed in the family until the early 1900's. It is now preserved for visitors, historians, lovers of architecture and everyone else to appreciate! There's so much history to see in Yorktown, so be sure to add the Nelson House to your itinerary!

We quickly found gifts for several family members, and some unique Pottery for our own collection. The staff was nice enough to hold our packages for us while we continued to tour. Great art, great customer service... a great experience all around! NOTE: If you are visiting with children, please note that almost everything in the store is breakable. The staff are very patient with children, but you will need to keep an eye on your children all times.

When we got to explore the exhibits, we saw how detailed everything was. As someone who is interested in sustainability, the overfishing history was fascinating. It's hard to picture what the York River would be like with all of the fish it had many years ago.
