I have been here three times now! I got my third nostril piercing re-done as well as jewelry replaced and my surface tragus done, all by Laura Byrd! Unsure of this piercers pronouns but they are SO SWEET. I've had an incredible experience, every time I have gone into enigma. I believe my nostril was around 150 including tip, but I did choose a fancier piece of jewelry to be pierced with paired with a new piece for another piercing. I believe my surface tragus was arounf 170 including tip and this time I also chose a fanicer piece of jewelry. They are super friendly, super cool lobby set up, this place is known as a the sister piercing location to River City tattoo, so both locations often have the exact same piercers, depending on the day! and they ALWAYS have good music playing. very clean/sanitary and very thorough in the piercing process, and you as the customer are heavily included in what's happening in the room while they pierce you! read more

Yes I pulled the trigger and finally got the nose piercing I always wanted, but was too much of a punk to have done way back when ( besides my dad would have killed me ). My great niece was my hype girl ( I'm easily manipulated by my 13 yo niece ). She said it would be fly on me, he he gotta love her. The place was clean, decorative and they accepted walk ins ( big ups). They had an amazing selection of hole fillers, and tattoo designs (may get a tat next). @piercingdynamics was my piercer ( I can't remember their name, just what they wrote on the card). They were a really calming person, with humor and charm. I was sashayed to the pokey room, to gitter dun! I was given an explanation of the process as I was experiencing it. I came here a few years back and got my tattoo done by a guy I think his name was Dan or Donny anyway so I was excited to come back and get a tattoo this weekend. Upon walking in I was barely greeted then when I started explaining and went to my phone to show the guy and guy at the counter I was basically ignored and he the girl walked off and the guy seemed to begin to start helping someone else. I was so disappointed in this experience. I went over to lucky tattoo and the guy told me that they don't like black and brown people and that was totally the opposite of my first experience I was in shock. I walked in early on a Sunday and was politely greeted by the associates at the desk. I hadn't bothered to make an appointment since what I wanted was rather simple. I was immediately referred to Jeff for my 3 stars : ) Jeff gave me very much appreciated brutal honesty regarding my design and area that I wanted my stars. Even though the vision of my tattoo when I walked in was a bit different than what I walked out with, my best advice would be LISTEN to the experts. It might not be what you want to hear but it's what they do for a living and the design will be with you for a lifetime. Jeff was super passionate about his work even though all I wanted was a few stars. I don't think that you can get much better customer service than that! The studio was clean and decorated nicely. I will definitely refer Jeff and go back specifically for him in the future. I had stopped at another tattoo shop before Enigma and had a very different experience. If you walk in with your vision and the artist provides you no feedback, then it's definitely a bad sign. Had the best piercing experience! Just walked in to get double helix piercings, and was immediately helped, there was no wait. Laura was the kindest piercer, walked me through everything. Once I told her my uneasiness about needles, she made sure I was comfortable and safe, and even watched me and gave me some juice to ensure I was okay afterwards. The whole process was super quick, and affordable!! It was only $35 for each piercing, and the jewelry was $30 a piece. It was so worth it, I'm incredibly happy. I'm pretty impressed with the service here!! My friend went in to get her nose pierced & James took the time to thoroughly explain to her the healing process/after care procedures. Although my friend brought three of us in with her, James didn't seem to mind. He was really friendly & accommodating. In contrast to my piercing experience in Charlottesville, James demonstrated great care. In addition, I had wanted to switch my conch jewelry for a while & found a simple seamless ring that I liked at Enigma. James was also nice enough to do a fitting for the jewelry to ensure that I liked it- which was cool of him. I honestly would make the hour drive to get my next piercing at Enigma. I love this place! I went here to initially get a piercing, but then decided to get a tattoo. I was met with a traveling artist named Scott Sketo who was the coolest guy ever and captured my vision for my tattoo entirely. Coming from NOVA, I was totally scared to know the price because of such great line work and coloring, but was surprised to find out it was half the price of a comparable tattoo I got back home. Loving this place so much, I went in again a few months later--they moved their store to the room next door and it was much cozier and the tattooing stations were more exposed--kinda what I'm used to, as opposed to going into a room to get a tattoo. Anyway, Dustin Davis tattooed me most recently and he's basically the hipster of tattoos; his motto is "if you're not doing it fast enough, you're not doing it" about tattooing. Yes, that may sound pretty scary but he works extremely efficiently; I was in be shop for less than an hour and a half from the time he started drawing to the time he finished tattooing! Wanted to get this piece at Enigma but they told me the font was impossible to do and the lettering was too small. After wasting an hour and a half of our time going back and forth between the condescending middle man and the artist (which doesn't even make sense, we should just be able to talk to the artist directly) we finally decided we didn't want to get tatted there because 1. What they came up with to replace what we asked for didn't look anything like what we wanted, 2. They wanted to charge me $150 for that ^ except it was enlarged by 200% and the font was ugly, and 3. They were rude and unhelpful the entire time. I kept asking the middle man, who was covered head to toe with tattoos, for advice on what he thought might work or look good and he kept saying "idk, it's your tattoo, I can't tell you what would be best or not," like he shouldn't be an expert on answering these questions?? Once we told them we changed our minds, we heard the artist shout "what the f***!?" From across the studio, expressing that they were obviously pissed. They kicked us out. When my friend realized she forgot the paper she printed her tattoo on, we went back for it and they sent their 6'+ body guard to tell us we couldn't have it back because they already threw it away and taking it out of the office trash can would be a safety hazard due to covid. We ended up at another shop right across the street who gave us *exactly* what we asked for at a very reasonable price and got us out of there in less than an hour. If the artist personally didn't have the skills to do what we asked for then they should've just said that instead of wasting our time and insisting that it simply couldn't be done. I've had my nose pierced two times before and it has always had problems in the healing process, so I was willing to pay more for better quality. I had my first tattoo done at Luck 13 yesterday and it was so exciting that I wanted to have two more done the day after! I Decided to try Enigma Studios to branch out and that was a mistake. After a bit of persuasion with the size of my tattoo, I was guided to my artist who was not welcoming at all. He was very condescending and when I added a preferred detail about the coloring, I was told that 'it would age poorly' and 'it was a mistake' but 'you're the one who has to wear it.' He did not say a word to me after that. The tattoo is fine, but I would not recommend this establishment. Lucky 13 has very very talented artists, better prices, and a better environment all around :). read more

I got my third tattoo here, which is much larger than the first two, and it turned out fabulous. I'm always getting compliments on it, and I just love it in general. I had originally tried going to River City Tattoo, but they were booked for at least 2 hours, so they sent me over to Enigma; I think they said something like Enigma is part of RCT, I'm not sure. I had to park a little bit away, on the street, which made me a little uneasy, but I guess that's the city for you. I popped into their place, and was happy with the way things looked. It wasn't dirty, and it hard vast hard wood flooring, The lobby was quite large. I'm ashamed to say that I don't remember the name of my tattooist, but he was quite friendly, and extremely patient. I showed him the picture of what I wanted, and he was able to work with it. He tweaked it around a bit, brought parts of it out, and we were able to get it on the part of my body where I wanted it. Again, it looks fantastic. While I was waiting, he was tweaking the picture, I was highly amused and passed the time, listening to this one moronic would-be customer who came in. I felt extremely sorry for the staff, because she couldn't understand the simplest of things. A female staffer, who was a piercer, was dealing with her first. The piercer kept explaining different earrings, and the differences in prices. What's so hard to understand that gold costs more? But I'll move on, because that doesn't really have to do with my own experience there [I learned after I used the bathroom that they sent her to Lucky 13 across the street. Those poor people!] After the design of my tattoo was done, the tattooist led me back to his room, and got to work. I have to admit, I was a bit surprised at how long it took to complete, but one doesn't rush art. Or pain. Thankfully it didn't hurt as bad as I thought. I've heard stories from friends about how one of their friends chewed through his lip, leaving it bloody and raw from trying not to scream. I'm happy to admit that I sat still throughout the whole thing, and didn't cry out, and my lips were completely undamaged. The price was also more than I expected, but it's quite fine. It turned out beautifully and the guy was very nice. All in all, I would recommend this place to others. read more

I had my first two tattoos done at Lucky 13 and the artists I had weren't very friendly and didn't explain much. This past weekend I ended up at Enigma and was greeted by the two guys at the front. Once my artist, Beth, came in she introduced herself and asked to see my ideas and promptly went back to her station to draw up a sketch for me. Without even having pictures in hand, she took my ideas and made the final product into a result far more above and beyond than I could've imagined. During the process of my tattoo she went through the entire process of what she was doing and even made some light conversation with my friends and I. Overall, if you want amazing artwork from a super friendly gal, go see Beth! I'll definitely be back to see her for any future work I'll get! read more

I've been getting ink from Enigma, from Freeman Martin mostly, for damn near 20 years now. I go in there to get my bf his 1st tattoo, some letters the size of a credit card, & all of a sudden Freeman wants to charge me $200! That's way overpriced for that!
