Unfortunately these teachers had an unconventional teaching style and were fired shortly after the new principal arrived a couple years ago. 8th grade was the easiest year of school i've ever had in my life, after febuary you could literally just walk out of class to join your friends and the teacher wouldn't care. Also the 8th grade outer banks trip was awesome, though we messed it up for the rising 8th graders by getting into trouble consistently, (urinating off of the hotel balcony, trashing the hotel room, etc.) The school has been ridiculed in recent years for being lenient with bullying however in my time there I never witnessed any bullying past your run of the mill middle school drama which was often dealt with efficiently. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good education and good opportunities. It also feeds into Asheville High which is the best high school in the area

The Historic Johnson Farm is a great place to explore. They offer guided tours of the house at…read more10:30 am on weekdays. But if you go at other times, you can take self-guided tours of the outside buildings, trails, and see the animals. There are QR codes to scan as you go along. The Farm and properties are owned by the Henderson County Public School System. When you arrive, there is free parking in the parking lot. I took the guided tour as I enjoy seeing the architecture of older buildings so when I discovered this property, I had to check it out. I had a private tour. The house was built in 1876. The house took four years to build. Bricks were made of clay from the French Broad River. The bricks did not all look the same so a stucco layer was added on top and white lines painted to make it look like normal bricks. The house has a lot of original furniture and mementos. The woodwork inside is high quality. The house and property are well cared for and in great condition. There are 7 fireplaces, and each has a unique mantle and beautiful cabinetry. The kitchen was once separate from the house, but it was moved at some point to become part of the house. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was used as a boarding house, and folks would come spend their summers year after year. A boarding house was added to the property in 1923 and is now the home of Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists. They were having a class while I was there. When Vernon & Leander died, they left the property to Henderson County Public Schools. They wanted and hoped that the property would educate others. The brothers are said to have been ahead of their time and used alternative farming and energy. The Historic Johnson Farm is doing exactly what the brothers had hoped and is a great addition to Henersonville, whether you want to tour the farm or walk the trails and see the animals.

I am a 76 year old retired US Foreign Service Officer (Department of State). For the past several…read moreweeks I have joined three or four other men volunteering to help a male third grade teacher at Black Mountain Primary School teach chess to about 30 boys and girls.The teacher has done the same at another school. We begin after school each Monday at 2:40 p.m. and stay till about 3:30. I am told that the school has seven third grades and the children learning to play chess come from all seven classrooms. My first impressions of the school were very favorable and remain so. All the school children whom I have observed are very well behaved, notably un-noisy, as they march in lines to leave school. The interior of the one-storey building appears to be octogonal and is in itself a lesson in geography. The library is large and without walls. The cafeteria also is large and immaculately clean. The overall impression is: this school is spacious, uncramped, brightly lighted, friendly. I have seen children at the end of our chess sessions escorted by our third grade teacher sponsor to the back parking lot to be picked up by parents. If after ten minutes teachers do not appear, back he brings the boys and girls to a central area to wait for their parent(s). The children's safety is clearly a priority. The principal is much in evidence and seems a benevolent presence. The youngsters themselves learning the elements of chess are a joy to teach. They are eager, bright, full of questions. Bottom line: my eight grandchildren live either in South Carolina or Dallas. The former six are home-schooled, the latter attend a Catholic parochial school. My earlier similar adult experience with American public schools was in Detroit -- a war zone.
