The former owners, who ran the Jöbstl for many years, decided to opt out and leave it to others to run this Grazer institution. The result is a Heuriger, this Austrian Inn and a wine tavern, where you can sit outside in the patio under the trees, or in the roofed patio when the weather is more challenging and enjoy this marvelous view over rolling hills. Even when sitting inside the Landhaus Ruckerlberg there are big glass walls to sit at and watch onto the scenery. The food we had is delicious and typical Austrian. In particular, we had an Austrian Goulash with bread dumpling, and lots of sauce. We enjoyed our meals in the patio since the weather was pleasant. A pleasant surprise!…read more One thing I really dislike about travelling on my own is a general feeling of discomfort eating in restaurants by myself. From the outside, I was a bit apprehensive about going in to this place, but once I opened the door I was greeted by such warmth that I felt at home immediately. The restaurant is full of cosy nooks and crannies over a number of rooms, so it feels small and intimate even though the capacity is actually large. The food was perfect for the rainy evening outside - a surprisingly large menu of traditional Austrian fare accompanied by an equally large range of quality local wines. I ordered the chicken "geschnetzeltes", which is a traditional mildly spiced chicken ragout in creamy paprika-zucchini sauce. To finish I had the best apple strudel I have had in years, all accompanied by a sauvignon blanc from the area. Verdict: wonderfully simple local food in a good atmosphere. The staff were very friendly too.

The interior is nicely decorated and the view through the windows onto the flashy red building of the Austrian Kronen Zeitung newspaper just across the street is a true eyecatcher and brings some color into probable grey autumn skies. But no worries, here at the Kaffeebar there are all kinds of newspapers. And by the way my coffee, a Verlängerter, this typical Austrian coffee, was delicious and the cakes looked yummy as well, though I didn't have enough time to get some.
