So I popped in yesterday, got some friendly service, and was really impressed with the selection. They have several sizes and types of boxes to choose from, all at reasonable prices. This U-Haul franchised service location at Ultramar (3990 Prince of Wales, Nepean, Ontario) is…read morenothing short of a clown operation. The attendants were not helpful in that any instructions that they attempted to provide fell way short of the mark in explaining to me how their system worked. I rented a van which I drove only 28 km. The fuel gauge was full when I started and was still showing a "full" status on return of the vehicle. I was told to top off the tank at their location on return. I ended up putting $17.90 worth of gas before I stopped the pump. The 28 km usage should not have required more than 3 liters of gas (approximately $5.00) to be replaced. The only logical explanation for this overcharge would be if the vehicle had a faulty fuel gauge (eg. stuck on "full"). I have submitted a complaint to U-Haul and I am awaiting a response. I have had many experiences with renting vehicles from U-Haul both in Canada and the U.S. and I never recall having such a misadventure. I will not stop using U-Haul, but I would not recommend to anyone to use this particular franchised location.

The lady who helped me at the cash was really nice and patient, which I appreciated because moving days are already stressful enough. She explained everything clearly and didn't make me feel rushed at all. The store was also very clean and organized, which made the whole pick-up and drop-off process feel simple. I used Routes Car Rental at YOW (Ottawa Airport) via booking.com for a SUV (Nissan Rogue or…read moresimilar). Turned out GREAT! Price was much lower than other companies, and quite phenomenal -- a new SUV for 2 weeks for about $600 total (August 2019 and booked 4 months in advance). I fell in love with the new KIA Sportage handed to me with panoramic sunroof and AppleCarPlay. Unlimited mileage and I was able to drive the car into Quebec at no extra charge. 2nd driver $5/day seems low and reasonable (but I don't know what other car companies charge). Shuttle pickup at the airport and drop-off went smoothly and site is very close by. Employees on site were presentable and inspired confidence. I would definitely use Routes again and also recommend for savings and their new cars. I was uneasy at first because no one seems to have heard of Routes Car Rental, but it all turned out very well for me. Warning: booking.com took an $80 non-refundable deposit which wasn't made clear until I had booked the car. I called Booking and it is their own policy and not to do with Routes. Routes allowed fully-refundable cancellations. Routes collected the balance up-front one month prior (I had booked 4 months ahead).

This is my experience during my most recent rental experience with Routes Car Rental. A few days into my rental, I discovered that one of the tires had developed a slow leak. While traveling outside the city, I was forced to repeatedly stop and refill the tire, which was both inconvenient and concerning from a safety perspective. Upon contacting the rental office, I was told that it was my responsibility to have the issue repaired. Following these instructions, I took the vehicle to Kal Tire, where I was informed that the tire had a pre-existing issue: it had been improperly patched in a location that should not have been repaired. I was advised that the tire required full replacement and that this damage would not have been detectable through a standard visual inspection at the time of pickup. As a result, I lost a full day of my rental addressing an issue that existed prior to my use of the vehicle. I then had to return to the rental office to exchange the car, further compounding the inconvenience. What is particularly disappointing is the response I received from your staff. I was initially told that the damage was my responsibility, despite clear evidence that it was pre-existing. Upon returning the vehicle, I was told the car had been "fine" when rented out, and no acknowledgment of the issue, apology, or compensation was offered. It is unreasonable to expect customers to arrange and manage repairs for rental vehicles, especially when the issue stems from improper prior maintenance. This raises serious concerns about vehicle safety standards and quality control within your fleet. At minimum, I believe I am entitled to: Reimbursement for the time and inconvenience caused (including the lost rental day) Compensation or a partial refund for the disrupted rental experience A formal acknowledgment of the issue and steps taken to prevent similar occurrences I strongly urge Routes Car Rental to review its vehicle maintenance practices and customer service policies. Customers should not bear the burden of addressing mechanical issues that originate from inadequate prior repairs.

The reservation was completed on the phone more than a month in advance. I also call a few days ahead of the pick up time to confirm the reservation and was assured that everything was in place. The day of the move I arrived promptly at 8am (opening time) and was told that there was no truck available. Needless to say I was more than a little upset. I ended up having to rent a truck from U-Haul at the other end of the city. What did I get from Discount to cover the mistake that they made...well he did dial the phone for me...guess this is what is meant by good customer service. I don't rent often, but Discount will never see business from me or anyone I know again. The two hour delay in getting started on my move not only affected me, but someone else who need the access to the delivery room and freight elevator in the building I was moving out of...
