The Ephesos Museum is to Vienna what the Elgin Marbles are to London or the Pergamon Altar is to Berlin. The ancient city of Ephesos in Asia Minor was one of the world's most important cities in both Greek and Roman times. It actually reached its glorious peak during the Roman era when the population approached a quarter of a million people. Well the Austrian Archaeological Institute and the University of Vienna have been the lead excavators of this classic site for more than a century and you can see some of the treasures uncovered in Vienna's Ephesos Museum. And don't worry that they may have to be given back. Unlike the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum, ownership of these works of art is not controversial as they were given to Emperor Franz Josef of Austria by the Ottoman Sultan in appreciation for the labors of the Austrian archaeologists and teams in excavating and bringing Ephesos back to the light of day! read more
