I am an African-American musician now living in Atlanta, Georgia, who previously lived in Charlotte for 11 years before leaving for grad school. I attended the University of Michigan and concentrated in Church Music/Organ Performance. I recently applied for the Director of Music position at Epworth United Methodist Church in Concord, North Carolina. When contacted by the chair of the music search committee I informed him that in order for me come from Atlanta, Georgia down to Concord, North Carolina for an in-person interview and audition, I would need to, at least, be reimbursed for the cost of gas (not mileage). I was assured that I would receive the requested $75 for gas reimbursement when I came down for the interview/audition.........I did not, even after two requests for reimbursement.
Money is not the reason for this review. I write this review in an effort to express my disappointment in the lack of professional, ethical, and moral consideration I received from the Epworth United Methodist Church music chair and search committee. One would think that the church would be the last place to receive such treatment.......but I guess not. I, also, have to wonder if I would have received such treatment had I been Caucasian.
