I've struggled with writing this review because reviews for Kamila already articulate so well what has come to be my experience working with her. And beyond not wanting to simply echo what is evident - that she is a gifted healer - the truth is that her work defies words. She listens to your body throughout the session and applies care where it is needed, checking in and using various techniques to give a beautiful massage. (3.5 stars.) I bought a gift certificate for my boyfriend and I to have a couples massage. They didn't ask us what kind we wanted, but I'm pretty sure we got Swedish. It involved a lot of deep pressure and long strokes. This was my first massage. For the price (!) and reputation, I was expecting something incredible. It was just good. It felt nice, but I wasn't very close to melting into a puddle of bliss. There's no way I'd pay that much again for it, because I feel confident that most people could give just as good a massage after taking one class. Maybe people translate this as feeling incredible because nobody ever gives them a massage normally. My dad's an aikido sensei and growing up I got accustomed to him randomly massaging the shoulders of my brother and I (shiatsu?). I didn't feel like the Equilibria women worked so much to ease tension as to make us feel nice for a while. The next morning, I didn't notice any lasting effect. Imagine... if you could zero out, suspend time and surrender to nothingness. As Kamila's hands danced on my back, I was trying my best to drop morsels of this experience into the music that was flowing, so that I could play it later and relive it (as I am right now, typing this). It was not a regular Swedish massage. It was Kamila's own intuitive movements consisting of cross-terrain hops, feathertouch and sensual slides. She let her muse take over and wrote poetry on my back. It was a totally new experience for me. Talk about sensory input, damn. And all that in just half an hour. I was visiting Portland and decided to book a massage. After reading the stellar reviews about Kamila, I tried to book with her, but being Mother's Day weekend, she was already booked solid. I decided to go ahead and book with someone else and was able to book an appointment with Lisa. I had been experiencing tension in my neck and shoulders and after traveling and carrying luggage, etc, I was very ready for my massage. I have had many massages in my life and the massage I had with Lisa was one of the best I have ever had. She adjusted the pressure at the beginning of the massage to go deeper and she used a variety of massage techniques that allowed both relaxation and a loosening of tight muscles throughout. She used a heat pad and a hot cloth at different points and also did a bit of stretching of my neck and shoulder area. She found all the right spots and did some great massage work at the base of my neck/head that not every masseuse does. She also played some lovely music that contributed to a wonderful experience. At the end of my massage I felt completely relaxed and very satisfied. Lisa also helped me before I left with some directions and maps for the tourist activities I had planned for the rest of the day which was very nice! Another business trip to Portland, another day in the life of Mister Sore Back guy. Stumbled across Equlibria (no pun intended) right here on Yelp, and was fortunate enough to book online with very short notice - the booking system worked efficiently and without any hiccups. Found some easy parking right on the street out front.. Valentine was a total pro, asked a lot of good questions, and then gave a remarkably healing massage - I swear I was at least an inch taller walking out of there. She intuitively honed in on my trouble spots (and some which I didn't even know were a problem) and really worked on a deep level; an informed touch that was just the right degree of firmness. Topped off with some craniosacral work, plus some alignment tips which were valuable even for this sometimes-yogi. Valentine is terrific at what she does; I would recommend her highly. I used to come to Portland regularly - looks like that's only going to be a handful of times this year, but I'll try to get back to Equilibria when I'm in town. So anybody have some good massage jokes? If my back were its own country, it would be ruled by Myofascists...nyuk nyuk (I'll be here all week...) Okay, so I don't have anyplace to compare it to in Portland, but my experience at Equilibria ranked right up there with a couple of good studios where I've had excellent deep tissue work with tenured LMTs in CA and NY. One gets the sense that the folks at Equilibria are there to improve your life and they genuinely love what they do - all in a relaxed setting without any "spa business posturing". I normally don't give out 5 stars, but I was impressed with Equilibria! I needed to get some relief for a chronic neck issue and it was close to 4th of July, so tough to book a spot. I found Equilibria through Yelp and was able to get in very quickly. It's easy to find (right on NW23rd) and the place itself is very homey and relaxing. A lot of thought and care went into the details and setting of each room. Jen, the owner, was able to help work out my knots. The whole experience was so relaxing. I scheduled a 60-min massage last minute Fri afternoon, through Equilibria's website. I showed up and was greeted by Laurel. She asked me what I needed worked on and what my main goal was for the massage (I have 2 small kids, hubby went out of town for waaaay too long, my neck hates me, etc.) Then, it's all a blur!
