In cookery, there are tomatoes and then there are Tomato Stall tomatoes. This is recently become…read moreone of my favourite stalls at Borough Market Stocking only tomatoes grown all year round in their own farm on the Isle of Wight, they pick their fruit at the peak level of ripeness, delivering a guaranteed level of sweetness which you can't guarantee in supermarket fruit They grow about 40 varieties commercially and their stall is a riot of different colours and sizes They also have a most impressive lineup of processed products. They oak roast their tomatoes with different herbs but I love their tomato chilli jam the best, which matches so sweet tomato flavour with a satisfying late hit of chilli. They also carry tomato relish, passata, tomato juice and tomato chutney Don't worry if you can't make it to Borough Market or the Isle of Wight - check their website for a wide range of stockists

Best greengrocer in London? I am not really well placed to judge but Tony Booth's outlet has the…read moremost amazing array of produce I have ever seen. The fact that I will (semi) willingly trek across from Highbury to shop here says it all. The hoard of mushrooms of all varieties that greets customers at the front of the shop makes me immediately think about wild mushroom risottos and tarts (irrespective of the reason I am here). They are displayed with justifiable pride - this is the only place where I know ceps and morels (and all their mushroom friends) are guaranteed to be available to buy when in season. It is not just about the mushrooms though - all the other vegetable and fruit goodies you would expect from a greengrocer are here as well as a few things that one wouldn't (I spied some preserved lemons here yesterday). Put this together with staff who are friendly and knowledgeable and you have a winner - fantastic!
Booth's used to be at Borough Market. It was a Borough Market institution…read more But with the diaspora of market vendors either kicked out of Borough for selling elsewhere or tired of paying for the ever-increasing Borough rent, Booths moved on over to the new Maltby Street Market. This works for me. Because now I can find my fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables for the week along with select pantry items amongst other locals who are perusing the goods because they actually want to buy them and cook them rather than gawk at them with their enormous DSLRs (and just generally get in my way). Booths is always buzzing with activity on Saturday mornings, and you will undoubtedly see one or two restaurant vans outside picking up their produce, a testament to Booth's quality and to the fact that the model of picking up and moving to a truly local market works. Who needs Borough when there's Maltby Street?

Appalling customer service. I was told that my box of frozen fruit will be delivered before midday…read moreso took the morning off work. At 11.30am there was still no sign of my delivery so called the company to double check that it will still be with me before 12, to which they said yes definitely. Midday comes and still no sign of my package so left for work having wasted my whole morning. Half an hour later I receive a call from the company saying that the driver is there and needs someone to take in the package (which may I add needs to be put straight into the freezer). I explained that I had already left for work and that it is their fault as they should have ensured the package was delivered before 12. I told them that we will have to reschedule for another time as there is no way I will be able to make it back. The rep then says to me that it is not possible to take it back to the warehouse and asked if they could leave it with a neighbour (who has to keep it in their freezer). I gave her strict orders NOT to leave it with a neighbour and she said she will think about what to do and call me back. An hour later she calls me back saying they left it with a neighbour?! She then had the cheek to ask if I had the neighbour's number so she could call them and tell them to keep it in the freezer! Unbelievable, and what was worse is that I have yet to receive a single apology for wasting my morning and for going against my instructions. Avoid

A little sign proclaims that this confectionery was invented for an emperor several millennia ago. It's fascinating to watch as the chef starts with a piece of maltose sugar, which is elastic and this is formed into a ring shaped and with repeated dipping into toasted flour to keep the strands separate, is repeatedly stretched and twisted with each repetition tripling the number of strands. The final resulting collection of fine strands is then divided into small bunches which are put around crushed peanuts. Eaten immediately, these are soft and quite moreish. The chef says that these can be kept in the fridge but they will turn hard. It's entertainment as much as food which draws the crowds. Fun to watch but prices are a bit steep at £3 for one box and £10 for 4 boxes.

During the pandemic, in spite of all the stress, the staff have been unfailingly courteous and immensely helpful. Recently, several jams had sold out. I waited for a staff member and made him aware of my needs; he immediately went off to find what I was looking for and returned less than two minutes later to restock these products and hand me the things I required. He did this so politely that the episode stuck in my mind. Long ago I worked for several top West End stores so I know the normal pressures on shop workers: the customers are ten times ruder than the staff! Well done, Budgens. If I could, I would give you ten stars. Best wishes, Paul Manton

The place is very busy so with a high turnover of product, most produce as the name of the business would suggest, is good and fresh. Great if you have got a lot of mouths to feed. Even if you're a one or two person household this place is good if you are trying to eat healthily or maybe want to pick up supplies for a juicer. What a lovely little shop!!…read more I popped in here on the way home as my friend told me that they do amazing homemade baklava. I was really impressed by their fruit and veg. I bought some lovely aubergines, courgettes, peppers and tomatoes (for ratatouille -nom) they were all gorgeous and reasonably priced. I also tried some of their plums and pears - the pears are easily the nicest I've had in London. I looove baklava so I chose a few different types and wandered home all excited! You can tell they are home-made...and they are bigger than the baklava I am used to from most Turkish shops in London (yay!) ...BUT I wasn't that keen (nooo!) They were just a little bit too gooey for me - they seemed more like the baklava I've tried in Greece. They have so much syrup that the pastry goes a little soggy and can't retain its flakiness. Anyway, despite the baklava disappointment, I still really like this shop. I'll need to come back for their homemade hummus and other delicatessen items. If you live near here, you should come and try them too!

I slipped on my trainers, put on my sunglasses and set off on foot to Yasar Food Market. I arrived a few minutes later and was pleasantly surprised by the shop. In all honestly, I wasn't expecting much from a food shop off Caledonia Road. The shop is clean and tidy and didn't have that awful smell that seemingly all food shops in London have. There's a fair amount of stuff stocked in this tiny shop but it didn't feel messy or crowded or should be features on an episode of Hoarders. It felt homey and warm and welcoming and I loved it! Running down the right-hand side of the shop is a deli counter with homemade foodstuffs - hummus, falafal, turkish pizza, tzatziki, olives, and loads of other stuff. The other 2/3rds of the shop was filed with various juices (some of which I've only ever seen in Whole Foods for double the price), homemade breads, and then an unusual assortment of typical fare you'd expect in a corner shop like Haagen-Dazs, Tampax, cleaning products, and Green & Blacks chocolate. The organic produce out front looked amazing. I think this may just be where I buy all my produce going forward. The tomatoes were red and didn't look like they'd been frozen like they are at all the big supermarket chains in the UK. The service was friendly (presumably a mother and son team, I've read the father passed away a few years back). The prices were tolerable and, hey, the shop is much closer to my flat than any of the three supermarkets in the neighborhood, so, again, why not?

The only negative thing I have to say about Brew is that there only ever seems to be one member of staff working at anytime and this can make the service very slow during busier moments.
