I went as a group of 4 adults to Escapade Huskimo (formerly Escapade Eskimo), and did their 2 km ride. Leading up to the experience, I was worried that we wouldn't enjoy the 2 km ride, and that we'd regret not booking the longer experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the end though. It was a good "taste" of the dog sledding experience, with no opportunity for boredom to creep in. The 2 km ride takes you on a loop around the property, and you / the dogs follow an employee on a skidoo. 1 participant sits in the sled while the other steers. 1 km into the ride you get the option to switch. We arrived early, so we had time to relax in their chalet. It felt so peaceful, and left me wanting to stay a night. You could tell how much joy the family had in operating this business and caring for all the animals. After the experience, we returned to the chalet for a snack and hot chocolate. I really, really wish this place wasn't so far away. Expect about a 1.5 hour drive from Ottawa (this is important to note when deciding what to do/which package to get). For us, we had selected a 45 min "sprint" package which we were told was about 20 mins of dogsled time plus instruction/prep. We expected this to be a private experience, but ended up getting our prep/training at the same time as another group. Not really a big problem, though we ended up having to wait for them to finish their rides before we got ours. The thing with this is that we were feeling pretty bad for the dogs who, after two back to back runs before us, were seeming pretty tired. That being said, the run itself took maybe 10 minutes, not 20, so it was a bit disappointing due to the cost, but we were relieved to not be further tiring the animals. I have mixed feelings. It was really fun while we were doing it... but then we had internal debates and guilt over recreational use of the huskies (who were beautiful, by the way!) The employees were friendly, and the setup was definitely nice. You are provided with a warm beverage and fireplace to warm up after, which is definitely a good idea in our frigid Ottawa winters! My wife and I both had our first experiences dog sledding here at Escapade Eskimo. Which is located about an hour and a half north of Ottawa. If you are going to use a GPS system to find the place, Sylvain (the owner) informed us that most GPS systems get their clients lost. He then gave us a detailed step by step instruction on how to reach them. We then proceeded to use Waze (an GPS app on the Iphone, don't know if its out there for Android yet) and Waze got us there the same way as Sylvain instructed. This is a small company run by a very sweet couple. They have slightly more than 20 dogs and are able to bring 2 groups of 2 on their dog sledding runs. We opted for "The Adventure" which is a 15 KM ride. Both participants will get a chance to drive the sled. One drive on the way out, then at the half way point you switch and the other drives back. Sylvain does tell you how to drive the sled including the commands and what to look for while you are driving. You will also learn how to set up the sleds and how to leash the dogs as you help Sylvain set everything up. If you are like us and come from a more temperate winter, They do have some clothes to lend you. We were under-prepared for the Canadian Winter. I borrowed warm snow boots while my wife borrowed boots, gloves and a thick coat. At the end of everything Sylvain and his wife let you warm up and feed you while you view some of the pictures Sylvain took during your ride. Great experience. Beautiful location even in the summer. Grapes, Fruit Trees, Maple products. Hiking trails . Lodging is top notch with air conditioning and friendly Hostess. Look forward to returning in the fall for a hike and again in the winter to experience the North with a dog sled ride with the family. Call ahead their space is limited. Fantastic. My husband and I checked it out for our first time dogsledding. We loved it. The dogs are really well trained and very friendly and the host was great. We had so much fun and can't wait to go back. The host took pictures of us driving the team and put them on a disc for us. It was a great touch. read more
