This is one religion I could get on board with; 17 year old me would have happily renounced normal life, abandoned my studies and set my eyes firmly to the Buddha. So, our class visit to Samye Ling is one I've fond memories of. I revisited the monastery just recently, and it was just as beautiful as I remember. It's so incredibly remote and unexpected; a truly hidden gem! - A Buddhist monastery in Dumfries & Galloway? Everyone I've told about it has been surprised to know of its existence, and amazed by the photos. It's quite a drive out of the city, but definitely worth the journey. You will definitely feel like you've travelled much farther. I recommend that you bring a camera and that you take the time to walk and explore. It is a tranquil place to be, and there are beautiful sights to discover. The temple is stunning. - Take your shoes off, perch upon a cushion, perhaps meditate if the feeling takes over, or just take in the surroundings. Whatever you do, there is no denying the beauty of it all. Maybe there will be some live music, like there was when I visited the temple. - We were very lucky to have caught some musicians practicing together in the corner. We visited on the Easter Monday which, in hindsight wasn't the best idea. It did feel a little like a tourist location, with lots of children and families, and it was a little louder than my last visit. Most visitors understand that we owe respect to those who live and practice at Samye Ling, as they are so welcoming and hospitable to allow visitors at all times. But, it was a little hectic this time round. I'd recommend avoiding paying a visit during school holidays for this reason. I don't want to write much more because Samye Ling is something to be discovered for yourself. Go on a weekday if you can, take your camera (although I'd advise no pictures in temple, as beautiful as it is!) and there's no need to bring a packed lunch as there's the Tibetan Tearoom which is really reasonably priced. This is a really special place that's worth planning a journey to. Enjoy!

The Buddhist Temple comes into sight as you drive up past Eskdalemuir. I always find it settles my mind and fills me self with peace as we approach this small sanctuary. Samye Ling is the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to have been established in the West. It serves as a centre for wisdom and learning within the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and is open to people of all faiths and none. I have taken day classes here but they also offer longer retreats and courses. The organic garden has produce for sale and there is a small cafe and shop. You can stock up on all of your Buddhist needs here. I find it pleasure just to get here and wander around the prayer wheel building and in amongst the temples, statues, fountains and fish ponds. It has a lovely feeling to it and I always leave here less stressed than when I arrived
